after this, guns started using piano on stage (dizzy) and background singers on the use your illusion tour. they were very heavily influenced by the stones.
this video IS the salt of the earth... Keef starts this song like his life depended on it... and when Axl starts to sing... OMG!!! one of the greatest performance in the history of RNR...
keiths voice is the one that made me jizz...premature some would say..oh and by the way axl i bet you wernt late for this and i bet you didnt think of jumping of the stage
@sasafraz11 no problem. i've got the unauthorized biography of the band here. it's pretty accurate, especially with show dates. it's been cool checking things out on youtube, as i read about them in the book! it's called Watch You Bleed, if you're interested. i'm a fan, so it's a fun book.... just thought i'd help you out, as it was right in front of me. cheers
@huzza18 i'd have to grab the book again, but i think it's madison square garden in NY. a few months prior to this, they'd opened 2 nights for the stones in los angeles, at the forum. it was a mess - axl was almost a no show, guns hadn't seen each other in months, axl explained to the entire crowd the first night that slash was a junkie and killing the band. but mick asked him to come out and sing a song or two with Izzy in NY....
It's not ironic, if axl said he would never sing with the stones and then he went and sung with them then that'd be ironic... whether guns n roses covered a song of the rolling stone's or not has nothing to do with it.
Mick Jagger, here, has had some of the 60's, the whole of the 70's and most of the 80's to perfect his stage craft, and a young Axl Rose just strolls on stage after a few years with GNR and takes the piss. Axl in his heyday would've ruined every frontman ever, and that includes Mr Morrison
@felixx13alvis13 my dad has this whole show + pre-show on vhs. but i wouldn't know how to upload a vhs. sry.
i remember watching this video growing up. i was so amazed at the size of the stage. 18 years later and i still am. watching the video made me wanna go to concerts. it just looked so unreal.
@HighInTheHead axl and izzy were the chief "composers" but slash wrote a helluva lot of riffs like jungle, paradise city, sweet child, locomotive, coma, garden of eden, and more. i would call gnr songwriting a three headed beast with axl, izzy and slash.
@madboytomson my favorite songs were by slash, then izzy. I agree that izzy was extremely badass and probably the biggest reason guns got to where they were. Key word there is were, i wouldn't even relate the new gn'r to the old gn'r
@madboytomson Tottaly agree man ! That´s what I always say... After Izzy´s departure, guns´n roses got lost... He wrote all the good songs and classic riffs !
@yadek8 Don't know how Izzy wrote all their good songas when Axl wrote all their lyrics. Slash says so in an interview on here, just type in ''Duff and Slash 88'' and click on top video and watch Slash clearly state this. It was Izzy and Axl that wrote the songs, they both together were the chief song writers
@onepinkrose : yes man, you´re right, I tried to say the same, but with less words... They did It all together, axl and Izzy... I was trying to say that the band lost a lot of their spirit without izzy presence.
This represents why Guns N Roses were so great, Axl and Slash, had they stayed together, could've taken the world over for forever. But I'm just thankful we got what we did out of them, they were too fucking good to all be together, we were blessed to have them.
Weather you like Guns n' Roses or not you have to admit this was a great performance. GnR were so big at the time no other band of the peers ever made it like this. At this point in time when this happened Guns n Roses were on top of the world. It did not get bigger then this.

All those that think Axl Rose was over-rated blah blah. Take a look! This is in the 80's. And Mick Jagger is an established frontman of one magical rock n' roll band. And Axl commands the stage. And there's only one fella holding the notes at the end, and it ain't Mick. Axl is in his early-mid 20's here. Check out Keith at the end of the song standing behind Mick n Axl. He knows Axl gave Mick a good run for his money. I love both bands, but to walk on stage and sing with Jagger and the Stones!
This is so fantastic to see Izzy and Axl together with Rolling Stones. To me, Axl and Izzy were the heart and soul of Guns to keep it going back in the days.
Hah... When Rolling Stones asked them what song they wanna play and Axl n' Izzy said "Salt of the Earth" they asked what song is that haha... But it came out magically, for sure.
