Hey. So I just watched the video with a friend and now know how to play the riff as well. Was wondering if we could see you play the entire track, 'Communication' so I too could then learn how to play the entire thing on keyboard. I am guessing that only a few sheet music exists for trance tracks.
And THEN we finished the spankin new studio session with Orjan Nilsen. I thought we would upload it to my channel. But because of the massive response to this clip, we decided to launch it on the official channel for orjan nilsen. Allso a big thanks to armada, that helped us out with the editing! Go see that thing on "orjannilsenofficial" youtube channel!
@kjemper He's Playing on a Waldorf Blofeld, Theres a Virus TI Rack edition behind him, the Synth infront of the computer screen is a Novation K Station, He's using Cubase on pc, and im almost certain the monitors are by Mackie (either the Mr8's or the HR824's)
"Not the easiest riff to play" Is that a joke? This shit is the dumbest musical sequence on earth. If you doubt me, hear Totentanz by Liszt - there's a version played by Valentina Lisita - Etude 10#12 from Chopin - Theres a good version played by Richter - Fanfarres and Desordre from Ligeti. When you hear them all, you're going to agree with me - considering you have a brain.
@gustavoturm: I'm truly sorry if this kind of music does not appeal to you. I can agree with you that there are a whole lot of pianists that can play insanly complex pieces for two hours straight without missing a single key. And yes, that is a far bigger achievement then what you see in this clip. But still, playing an arpeggio is not easy for an average joe. So when I say "Not the easiest riff to play", I mean just that, and nothing else.
@djrare87 Can you please read my argument again? I didn't said that this kind of music does not appeal to me. The argument speaks only about it's being hard or not, not about my music tastes. Theres a problem in your second argument: Whenever you make a comparison and classify something as hard or easy, you cant compare it to the average Joe, it makes no sense: Everytime a comparison is made, the first object of the comparison will be hard, because the average joe cant do it.
@djrare87 Not exactly: There are two kinds of comparison: The comparison that take account yours skills and a more general comparison, taking account all human beings. The second one is kinda more plausible/noble.
@gustavoturm: And for the "This shit is the dumbest musical sequence on earth" comment, I just have to say: Grow up and get a clue! Music is subjective. If you don't like it, thats fine you have the right to. But you cant realy argue against millions of people that praise this song skyward and beyond. Sorry...
@djrare87 You're completelly wrong. You just swallowed the information without questioning: In what circunstances is music subjective? If music was completelly subjective, we would have absolutelly no classification of it. And, there wouldn't exist aestethics. The beauty of music IS subjective. The skill required to play a piece of music isn't.
@gustavoturm: So what part of your comment: "This shit is the dumbest musical sequence on earth", is an objective point of view? To me it just seams like a cry for attention...
@djrare87 Well, it's because this is not my entire argument. My entire argument had some comparison points. These comparison points are the objective point of view... As you may have noticed, you can't play the Totentanz. =)
@gustavoturm: just as a sidepiont, you do realise I'm not the one playing in this clip? Like I started out saying, I understand your points about how this specific arp is not a complex piece of music to recreate for a skilled pianist. But from my point of view, beeing a producer of EDM, knowing and understanding the specific genere, I just can't see why comparing "Communication" to "Totentanz" is relevant. The producers of EDM is not, and will never be comperable to a bred pianist.
@djrare87 That's why i'm saying the sequence is not hard. I'm making a global comparation. I kinda have a soft background on mathematics, stating that what i know is hard when i compare it with the mathematical knowledge of the average citizen is kinda unfair. The comparation IS plausible because both objects are instances of the same class: They're sequences played on keyboard.
@gustavoturm And I think it's about as fair as comparing a basketball player to a football player. Both need skills with a ball, but what skills are needed, is two different stories.
@djrare87 Completely wrong. Both games have completely diferent sets of rules. While the execution of musical sequences on the keyboard under the standpoint of skill required to play it have the same rules. They're sequences of notes played on the same keyboard pattern, they have exactly the same form (Sounds or silences sequenced on a timeline). You need to remember the standpoint of skill required to play the sequences, not the rules of both kinds of music.
@djrare87 Your comparison could be plausible if you're comparing the standpoint of skills with the ball - and only this standpoint - this way it's easy, we just need to answer a question: Who's able to make a bigger set of motions with a ball?
@gustavoturm: But thats exactly the point your missing. For a pianist it may be just about pressing the keys in a given timeline. Thats not the case for a producer. Thats why I think the comparison is not fair.
saying "This shit is the dumbest musical sequence on earth" because Chopin is harder would be like me saying Communication is the most difficult piece on earth to play compared to "ol' mac donald". this is a stupid way of comparing. djrare87 said in his description its not "the easiest riff to play" which is quite fair if you ask me. He places the difficulty of playing this piece in a grey zone between "father jacob" and vivaldi's summer.
@OfficialAerium Assuming your pressuposition that Communication is the harder music and ol' mac donald is the easiest music, and considering that we're treating only about this songs - Communication is the most difficult piece on earth. This argument is plausible. I just cant see why you think it's stupid.
Plausible from an empirical and rather narrow point of view of looking at 2 individual tracks, fair enough, but in order to make a sense-full comparison within a medium which is as vast as this one , one would have to take the other side of the spectrum into account . Wouldn’t you agree with me that “this shit is ONE of the dumbest musical sequences on earth” would at least be a better description?
@OfficialAerium@OfficialAerium You're taking it TOO literaly. And you're having a problem understanding figures of speech. I said that the skill required to play a piece of music is similar to Data divided by time. So...isn't it obvious that the easiest piece of music is the piece of music having 0 data and or ∞ time? And isn't obvious that this music isn't the case? I guess the case is about 4'33" from John Cage: 4'33" minutes of silence. You have only 1 instruction: Count time
@gustavoturm “This shit is the dumbest musical sequence on earth” is an absolute, emanating from an incomplete comparison. If you don’t want harsh words to be thrown back at you over their content I kindly suggest you choose your words with more care before posting them sir.. now, as for your “I said it was about data/time all along” So you did, however the Data/time formula remains in this context irrelevant since the comparison framework established by you remains incomplete and thus flawed.
@OfficialAerium Imagine you have a list: [1,2,3,4,5,6]. 6 IS the biggest number on this list. You just said me now: "Wow. Because 6 is the biggest number is like saying that 3 is bigger than 2...this is stupid...this is a wrong way of comparison."
Strawmans argument, this is not what I said, you said: 10 is higher than 5, so 5 is the lowest number possible. And what I was saying is that doesn’t make much sense since there is 1 2 3 4 (and 0 if you want.)
@OfficialAerium That's why i said you're taking it TOO literaly and you're having a problem intepretating figures of speech. See the comment where I cited John Cage and his 4'33".
@OfficialAerium In keyboard technique, this is a sequence of broken chords. Elaborated keyboard pieces includes more complex broken chords, scales, counterpoint, and a lot of daunting other keyboard challenges therefore, this piece is simple shit, since it's based only on some simple broken chords.
@gustavoturm The concepts of counterpoint and scales are related to the musical piece. This video is about playing it, not the composition of the riff. Playing technique is technically nothing more than hitting the right note with the right velocity at the right time. If you however wish to switch from playing till the actual composition then you would comparing a riff with a full blown piece compiled of riffs ,sequences etc. This is like comparing a cup with a crockery set.
@OfficialAerium And where did I say it's about composing the riff? I said all the time it was about it's execution. Your argument about what keyboard technique is naive, but it's correct. It's about hitting the right note at the right time with the right velocity. So, if you have more notes to execute in less time, it's going to be a little more difficult, isnt it?
Where did you say it’s about the composition of the riff… You compared this riff with keyboard pieces having more quality regarding chord complexity, scales and counterpoints. These are elements of the arrangement/ composition of a piece/riff. And though related not mutually exclusive to the execution of a piece. If you’re allegedly only referring to the execution of a piece (time vs data) then your before mentioned post is apparently something for the trashbin.
Yes. And the only sequences you’re comparing them with are sequences which are more complex. In other words you’re discriminating the mediums in the comparison spectrum to benefit your argument. Hence your statement/bash not making any sense.
@OfficialAerium Discriminating it or not won't change the plausibility of it. One sequence is superior, while other isn't. One sequence is a shit, while other isn't. Does it really make a difference?
It makes as much difference as it makes sense mate :D if you’re only (repeatative) argument to sustain your claim that this is the easiest riff on the planet is that thats plausible if you simply ignore all easier pieces in the comparison frame. then this entire conversation is an insult for my time and hopefully an addition to your intellect, no pun intended..
Congratulations my friend !!!! what a manner to play trance music!!!!, i'm very proud to heard this kind of music, regards form México, I'd like to know if you've came to México to show us your talent, is great !!!
@ScOgLiO99 this is from his facebook account...."Here's a vid of me playing @arminvanbuuren 'Communication' on synth at my friends place #trancefamily #TeamOrjan". Friends place. His studio is probably much sicker
@intotheboxyougo I must agree with you. IMO, this guy is the most tallented and the best producer nowadays. On the other hand, I don't think I'd want this guy to become mainstream. That Dj Mag shit use to make good djs change and start producing some cheesy and commercial music. Of couse Orjan desearves recognition for his amazing work but I don't know if it's be good at all for his music...

It's funny to see that he's playing in a very simple room, not a recording studio or something like that, but a classic room where a young guy lives

@ScOgLiO99 this is from his facebook account...."Here's a vid of me playing @arminvanbuuren 'Communication' on synth at my friends place #trancefamily #TeamOrjan". Friends place. His studio is probably much sicker

the most under-rated dj of 2011. this guy deserves so much more credit for what he has produced.
intotheboxyougo 2 months ago 92
@intotheboxyougo I must agree with you. IMO, this guy is the most tallented and the best producer nowadays. On the other hand, I don't think I'd want this guy to become mainstream. That Dj Mag shit use to make good djs change and start producing some cheesy and commercial music. Of couse Orjan desearves recognition for his amazing work but I don't know if it's be good at all for his music...

@intotheboxyougo He's not under rated.. he's one of the only Trance DJ who go up in the DJ Mag Poll..

@intotheboxyougo his DJing isn't underrated mate, his production is.
