I finally got to see "Travis" live at the Coachella festival back in 07' (here in the states) and never in my wildest dreams did I think they would play this song live..Half way through a stellar set, the lead singer pulls out a 12 string (tunes it for a minute - telling all of us that "hell will be filled with out of tune 12 string guitars and broken sprinkler heads" Everyone LOLZ.

And boom they break into "Driftwood"... and it's a perfect day.

@travisfan2381 Wood that finds its way into water or comes from water (ships and whatnot). It gets knocked about and worn away until it washes up on a shore as a brittle chunk 'hollow and of no use'. The song's using it as a metaphor for someone who's (sadly) become a shell of the person they used to be, battered by the world into driftwood.

It's sad really, now I'm older I know exactly what the track's saying. Back when I was young I just liked the sound of it, the message was wasted on me.
