One of the first -- if not the first -- major jazz performance in the Chapel was by the original Dave Brubeck Quartette brought to Lawrence by the brothers of Delta Tau Delta in, I think, 1957. At the time and despite the talents of con student John Harmon and his well-attended jazz performances at the Memorial Union, jazz was not highly thought of by the faculty of the conservatory. Thankfully, that has changed.
