Here is the sad part. People like this have such big ego's that what happened to them doesn't even make them miss a beat. They will be stretching their Vampire Bat wings to swoop down on another group of innocent, hard working people to see if they can suck out another gallon or two before the die.
This guy is a prime example of what we need to teach our children not to be.
Segnar's first wife loved the folks at Internorth but after their divorce Sam married a Houston socialite who could not stand being away from her circle of friends and pressured Sam to move the company to Houston. Since Enron started in Omaha and that was the center of most of their profits, this was hard to do until Kenny Boy came along. I was in the room when Lay raised his hand and swore an oath that Enron would NOT move to Houston, The first of many, many lies.
@TheLostRealist513 NO! The only thing that Ken Lay did was change the name in 1985. The company that became known later as ENRON was founded in the 1930's as Northern Natural Gas. It was the largest natural gas pipeline in North America and later became a large diversified energy company. Ken Lay seized control in 1985 through deceptive means. I was in the board room when he got that job. He bought the votes of two Internorth directors, Arthur and Robert Belfer. Lay covered up their crimes.
I recall overhearing a conversation between Lay and Arthur Belfer where Belfer asking him how to handle a thorny tax problem. Lay said to fight the IRS at ever step, in the courts and politically and then offer a small settlement. The question was NEVER whether or not the tax was fair. Lay was a tax cheat and a liar. Skilling was a greedy puppet that Lay set up to take the blame. THAT is why Rich Kinder bailed. Ask Mike Muckleroy is you doubt me.
Mr. Mike is happy in Florida or on his yacht. I'm sure Enron's far from his mind these days. One could alternatively try to see him when he visits his sons in Tulsa.
I have many relative in Tulsa and I would be happy to see him again. He told me the Lou Borget story when we were traveling together in West Texas for ENRON. There is SO MUCH that has never come out about ENRON and I think it is worth while telling. NOT just to lay blame where it belongs but to clear the name of the good businessmen like Mike and the late Dan Dienstbier. One who has received little blame and should be blamed is Sam Segnar who was the first ENRON CEO.
@amiga2000: If i'm right, Muckleroy was the company's president from 1987-1990 after the infamous Valhalla Crisis which ousted Borget from the post. In 1990, Jeff Skilling, who joined Enron in '87, became its president. This is how it is conveyed or portrayed in the Smartest Guys in the Room, but is it all correct?
@exenrontexas When did Muckleroy retire? I saw the Enron doc and he said he could only speak of the Enron scandal from 1989 that Ken Lay knew that about it and ignore it.
@clipobserver '89 or '90. But the Enron Trading scandal that Muckleroy testified about was ENORMOUS. Probably $170 MILLION or more. Lay had all sorts of staff meetings about it where he ran down the crooks and said he was not involved and we now KNOW that he was lying. Since the GOP tried in every way to cover up the ENRON crimes until they became absolutely obvious, this is a good reason why Lay pumped hundreds of millions into the GOP coffers over the years.
@exenrontexas He left after the first scandal? Lucky him. Also like how to recalled how he got the correct book granted maybe he did go too far threatening to kill the guy but him and other almost screw thousands of people out of jobs and benefits. Sadly, Lay and others didn't learn their lesson and people paid dearly.
@clipobserver I was traveling with Muckleroy and some other pipeline execs to a meeting in the oil patch of West Texas and Muckleroy told the story of how he confronted Lou Borget, the head of Enron Trading in Valhalla, NY. What he did NOT say in the movie was that he jumped over Borgets desk and beat him about the head and face until he confessed and then Muckleroy asked the secretary to come in to take down the confession. Borget signed it and went to prison.
Skilling had NOTHING AT ALL to do with the development and operation of EGS. The gas pipeline group was the ONLY part of ENRON that ever made real money and it was operating LONG before Lay or Skilling came along. Both are poster kids for American corporate criminals.
Northern Natural Gas was the jewel of the ENRON crown and the largest part of EGS. It developed the west Kansas gas fields to supply energy to the northern plains. It made BILLIONS in profit over the years. Ken Lay CLAIMED to be earning millions but when the truth came out he made...NOTHING. Lay's life is a total failure based on deception. They only question I have is wheter or not he himself believed the lie. Based on overheard conversation, I don't think so. HE KNEW and STILL failed.
Can you please explain the fact that Skilling and Lay were "poster kids"? because I am writing a report about the Enron deception for my sociology class and I would love to add this side of the story. Thanks.
I would be happy to comment on what I know, but I am not sure what you are asking. "poster kids"? I began working at what later became known as ENRON in 1984. I worked directlly with Willis Strauss, Sam Segnar and later Ken Lay. They were the first three chairmen of ENRON. The Lay regime was by far the criminal element and has been the source of much disinformation about what happened and when. I have not yet seen ANY accurate report describing what happened. What is your school?
Skilling is still in prison. He deserves to die there. He should never be a free man again. As for Lay....he is dead now but he too should have died in prison. Cooperate greed at its very worse. Think of the 10's of thousands of lives that were destroyed by these evil greedy men.
@DigitalAnonymous In June 2010 the Supreme court will hear an appeal by Skilling on the grounds that he had an "unfair trial". There is a chance he could get his sentence coummuted...who knows? I guess he has done 4 years so far?
