  • Was watching American Bandstand in 1983 when these 4 Welshmen walked on with the big hair. Literally changed my life. Music made sense again. My friends never understood them and I didn't care. To me, they were somewhere between U2 and the Clash but unique all on their own. They are comfort music to me, a place to go when I'm feeling down. Thanks for the memories from a Canadian Prairie boy.

  • The Alarm are still going 30 years on, I admit not the original line up but Mike still produces the most amazing music which he sings with the same conviction decades on. This band should have been great, for some reason Mike has always been shunned by the music press but watch out for a film called Vinyl which tells the story of how Mike fooled the feckless music industry

  • I remember NME trying tu humiliate and downgrade the alarm as welsh stadium rock and things like that while championing U2's zooropa as the future of alternative rock music...nme has alwyas been very shite about promoting good bands..I wonder how many good bands dissapeared becos they didn't get enough media coverage..the geeks and losers writing reviews in NME have been ruining the good of music for so many years..

  • I agree about not getting into arguments about who is better. But it's nice to find kindred spirits who prefer The Alarm!

  • The Alarm can't be compared to anyone. Enough said.

  • PLEASE POINT OUT A CURRENT A#$%)(* that sings and tells you a story about our human condition!! This Welshman should inspire all. While they started near the same time as U2, both bands had faith overtones in their music. I still love both bands and their commitment to faith, family and country. BLESS THEM ALL!

  • what a load of limp wristed waffle

  • 17 people didn't wake up to the alarm

  • The Alarm were good - still are good? I agree with a lot posted here that they were underrated at the time and their stuff still sounds awesome. There was a lot of talk at the time about them being the welsh U2 and I think those comparisons hold good - very direct comparisons can be made. At the time I preferred The Alarm. Big Country were doing very different things at the time I think - not a lot of punk influence there!

  • Brilliant song! The Alarm are great!!

  • Superb!

  • I can't believe it's over 20 years later and people are still arguing and comparing The Alarm and U2. Move on with your lives, people. Personally I prefer the Alarm but it's all a matter of opinion. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

  • the alarm, big country and U2 all top bands, love them all. U2 got the break.

Saw mike peters and big country last month, best gig ever, even better than U2 at Wembley.

  • Hey ,,why dont all you

    " non - guitar playing _

    wannabees

PISS OFF.......... this is great stuff,....

,even though it looks kinda gay and kinda 80's

hey life moves on man ,,they were kids back then

    the music still stands ...............

  • Why didn't you upload the whole of the song??

    Odd

  • @cannotthinkofaname You're right it's not the same without the last line. Funny how they shoot you down when your hands are held so high!

  • As for comparing the two - perhaps there was at a time - I for one was a huge Twist man fan, much more than 'the edge'; that said - the religous angle doesn't sell main stream - he's a dick, but Bono knew which way to go - give the Irish fuck some credit - either way were talking 20 years ago - still love the tune boys!!!!

  • alright alright, the Alarm were a good band but please, saying that they were better than U2 and that U2 sold out is preposterous. U2's sound developed as they aged; you can't honestly gripe a band for wanting to push their sound forward. If anything they've sold out in the last ten years, but I couldn't care less about their new albums anyways.

And to say that U2 hasn't been loyal to its fans is also pretty ridiculous. Just saying.

  • @canadiangalzo Well it so happens to be my opinion that Mike Peters is a better songwriter. Songs like the one on this video display a sense of craft early on that U2 tried to get later on, as almost an afterthought. Sure, they wrote some ok stuff since they started "trying to write," but it's pretty clear who had his sh** together early on.

And I'm sorry, but Zooropa was not a step forward in any sense. And The Alarm can look back with pride and say they never made a record like that! :)

  • For me as an Irish man, U2 were over for me with Rattle and Hum. I grew up listenimg to U2, The Joshua Tree was a classic album but... I agree with you, The Alarm WERE a great anthem band. The Alarm will never be over, a great great band.

  • I seen U2 in 1985 in Croke Park, Dublin. I was 16. Now 42 and remember the 8O's with fondest. On the bill that day in Croker were a band I never heard of until then, called The Alarm. What a band.....I went away from that concert and starting buying The Alarm LP's. still have them on vinyl. A great anthem band.... they were as good as U2, but through themselves or the record company they sadly never got the BIG break....Still listen and love them

    Maggo.

  • This is an awesome band that i grew up listening to

  • My band is playing at The Cwmaman Music Festival this weekend and Mike Peters(The lead singer) is headlining. I can't wait to see him there. It's gonna be brilliant.

  • im luky enough to have been brought up in rhyl and see mike alot a true gent and a pure genious with music i love the alarm and im so proud of them and were we come from

  • One of the greatestest songs of all time, it exposes our strength, our compassion and our capacity of forgiveness and the frailty of which others take advantage of, learning to become strong and to eventually learn to love unconditionally. but what do i know, i never even graduated high school. long live the ALARM!!

  • theyre like a combination of bob dylan and the clash. and i must say thats a wonderful combination.

  • Pick any random song by The Alarm, stack it up against In A Big Country by Big Country, or early U2!

  • An uncanny resemblance to Alan Frew from Glass Tiger..Maybe because they are Irish...

  • Come on...when the Alarm toured the states they were trying anything and everything to sell. They played all the colleges and smaller venues in an attempt to be just as big as U2...some make it some don't...nobody really knows why...are they better than U2? No, however live they were fuckin' kick ass fun. Hollywood Palladium show was fantastic!

  • i saw these guys live last thursday...omg they were amazing! lol i was probably the yongest on there (16) but wow it was one of the best concerts ive been to! i really enjoyed it. they are amazing live <3 : D

  • @SteffiJane666 Dude, I'm jealous. Last time I saw The Alarm was back in either late 87 or early 88. It was a damn good show. Where did you see them?

  • @spiff2268 haha lol they do put on a good show XP a band i would deffinatly love to see again. and i saw them in sheffield at the plug :D

  • i love the alarm too and i love U2 , but it annoys me when people come out with the bullshit cliche of sold out, sold out to wealth?its crap, they took different approaches and didn't stay one dimensional. Bands like the alarm have not had longevity like U2 , not taking anything away from The Alarm but they aren't in their league really.

  • @johng9322 couldnt have said it better myself i agree 100%

i too am a fan of both.

  • just saw them today for the first time, WOW FUCKING AMAZING LIVE, there really isnt a better band live than than the alarm

  • Ok, U2 and The Alarm are(were) in different arenas. Listened to U2 before they were pop, on Boy, and you can't deny Edge's talent.

  • Love this track and this was played on Saturday Superstore in Jan 1985

  • The Alarm was one of the best bands in the 80thies, many compaired them with the irish band U2.

I find the Alarm to be better then U2.

But The Alarm did not sold their soul for famous and wealth like U2 did.

The Alarm was honest to their fans and to that real music.

  • jackass for real

  • @FreakersBall i always thought they were more similar to the clash. im not a big fan of u2 and i honestly cant stand bono. i always thought mike peters was closer to joe strummer both in song writing and sound.

  • You got it right x2stepprogramx.

The Alarm was a great group with real music.

Their unplugged gigs was just excellent.

  • FreakersBall, could you please tell us all with your wonderful English skills exactly how and when U2 sold their souls for wealth and fame? You obviously don't like U2 but we're here to compliment The Alarm not slag another great band.

  • No doubt that U2 moved away from the bands original music style after Joshua tree and Rattle and hum.

A new record deal and poweful label directors pushed them forward into the commercial Zoo tv, Achtung baby and Zooropa. and so on.....

The real U2 from Boy to Joshua tree are ecellent music, and yes i love that period.

I was`nt me who compeared them with The Alarm, but many did - even that the Alarm was much more a "unplugged" band. Sorry if you took this the wrong way, i did`nt mean too.

  • Sorry FreakersBall, nobody pushed U2 into anything,They were fed up of the same music and wanted to change

As Bono said at the end of the 80's,'we need to go away and dream it up all over again'.So they returned with the greatest album of all time,IMHO,that's a sign of genius not being commercial, just look at the Beatles for a mirror image.

A great band re-invents itself time and time again or tries new things, that's why U2 are still around 30 years after their debut album.

  • @MrTorresisgod No, a great band knows when to call it quits before they suck bad, like The Beatles did! ;-)

  • Oh, whatever

  • @FreakersBall you sir are right. U@ sold out the Alarm were real. U@ made 4 good records, the Alarms first record is as fresh as there last.

  • @originalminujk 6 good records. But I agree with you for the most part! :)

  • @FreakersBall I couldn,t agree more U2 went on to cater for plastic fans who then move on, Next Sunday I will be in Liverpool to see the Alarm for the umteenth time and can,t wait! And Doesn,t Bono love himself! The Alarm are there for us!

  • @drachir6

    Thanks man.

  • @FreakersBall i was a hugh fan of both The Alarm and U2, could you please explain how U2 sold their soul for fame and wealth and in what way were they not honest to their fans? The fact is The Alarm were a very good band but U2 always had the Edge ( pardon the pun) U2 moved on with their fans and their fans moved on with them. The Alarm stayed in the past its as simple as that.

  • @togs71 As you can see here, many people agree with me and understand what i ment.

You can have you own opinion, and write whatever you want, but you DONT know if there fans move on with them, in fact there old fans did not like their new commercial music - But hey they create a whole bunch of new fans. Good for them.

I still play U2`s first albums and they are good - If you like better the bands newest music thats allright with me, and again good for you.

  • @FreakersBall i understand what you mean i just dont agree with it.

sell their souls? is nonsense. i am and old fan and a new fan of U2 i didnt say i like the new songs better i like them all, i have a very open mind when it comes to music. Sure i cant speak for all their fans but to me i dont have to, record sales and world tours speak for themselves. im sure they lost fans and gained fans along the way and im sure The Alarm would have done some things different if they could do it again.

  • @FreakersBall ive just read your comment again and you said that I (me) DONT know if the fans moved on with them. So how do YOU know their old fans dont like their commercial music??? A few people agreeing with you on youtube dosent mean your right.

  • @FreakersBall Yeah, Bro! Early U2 is the best... THE ALARM DIDN'T GET SOLD DOWN THE RIVER! ;-)

  • @FreakersBall I like to think of the Alarm with a little Clash thorwn in there along with U2.

  • @FreakersBall puleeze...I like the alarm, first band I ever saw live at the royal court in liverpool (gary glitter turned up!!) but all this shite about U2 selling out?? WTF, U2 just got better as they got older, don't talk bollox. Was never convinced by the U2/alarm comparison either...U2 were better by a considerable margin. That said just finished listening to the alarm live 2005 album and it abso_fkin_lutely rocks!

  • @seymourbutt312 Hi, i thought this discussion was over with long time ago, but hey; Thanks for joining.

Let me start by saying, it was never me who compaired the two groups - I just wrot what i ment about them.

I still think U2 best music was from the start and until Rattle and Hum, and yes they got more and more commercial in their music pushed from the record label, bigger audiens more money and so on.

I Agree; to see The Alarm live, was just awsome.... :-)

  • @FreakersBall I'd say that Rain in the Summertime was pretty much soul-selling.

  • @FreakersBall "But The Alarm did not sold their soul for famous and wealth like U2 did." They, tried...it just didn't work.

  • @FreakersBall AMEN!

  • this band was somehting special Im gald they didnt become famous 68 Guns!!

  • They aren't a joke band, be quiet you moron!!!!

  • Don't rise............

  • nyallsmom

my heart is with u mate

  • Loved it then, inspires me now. Battled my way through Cancer with the help of this song...

  • : ) Warrior of truth~

  • Whoever came up with the idea for their haircuts, outfits and image should be drawn and quartered.

This was an amazingly great band that was sabotaged by being presented as the next Bay City Rollers.

  • and you were born when exactly..? If you were around when they were around, that was the look for bands of the ilk.- as U2 also sported at the time.. remember them playing in the apllo in Manchester..

  • Dude, they'll say the same thing in 20 years about the way musicians are dressed today. Styles come and go, and in the end that's not what matters. What matters is the music.

  • Saw the Alarm live at the Waterfront Barry, there were many highlights, however Going out in a blaze of glory was the encore, and a fantastic end to the FREE show, put on by The Vale of Glamorgan Council, 10 out of 10 to both the Alarm and the Council.

  • Very good band. I' ve always loved them.

  • the damned the alarm, billy bragg and the mahones are all set to appear at this years festival for joe strummer(strummercamp) its a totally top weekend and really cheap..check it out

  • mike peters what a legend. the pride of rhyl still going today not many bands can sy that.

    -LokiHear

  • what a great band, brings back great memories from the 80's.

  • I hardly remember the 80's

  • lmao

  • wow really, you must be young. I was a teenager, I remember, styles were goofy but music was COOL.

  • No,

I am 42, 68gunns was one of my usernames on several message boards

  • Your dreams must not be sold

  • I love the Alarm,my number 1 band of all time,a truly fantastic back catalogue of songs.Should have had the stardom and plaudits at the same time as U2. Blaze Of Glory-what an anthem.

  • you are so right!!!

  • yo dis should be da theme to blades of glory wit will ferrell

  • shut up!

  • Best welsh band !!!! I will always love their music-no matter what !!!!!!!!!!

  • who was at camp CATSKILL NEW YORK, when we first heard this, please respond!!!!!

  • its me. gary, who are you?, is that the team of 87?

  • that short guitar solo got me in 83 or 84 i loved it the best song they did

  • Don't forget what i told you now

When the question keeps on coming

It's "HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU TAKE"

When they've ripped your clothes to pieces

"shouldn't you be gone by now"

  • T was introduced to The Alam when they opened for the Pretenders in Passaic, NJ. Had never heard of them prior to seeing them. so I went in with an open mind, not knowing what to expect. After a kick-ass set, I left Passaic that night as a fan of The Alarm and have been a huge fan ever since. Got to see them several times in small venues through the years. One night they played Lafayette Collenge in a raging snowstorm. Small crowd, but what a set, they played for over 3 hours.

  • Loved these guys.. back in the day. Haircuts were pretty bad though. I tried to have one like them, but I ran out of hairspray. I heard they were still making music, Any truth in that?

  • They are definitely alive and well and on a big U.S. tour this summer with The English Beat and The Fixx.

  • Any dates in the NY/NJ area?

  • New Jersey is Fri. July 11th at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New York is at Irving Plaza on Sunday the 16th. Should be some fantastic gigs. Hope you get to go.

  • I was there, U2, Bruce, Complete waste of space, only fueled by the simplistic moron. The Alarm and Big Country were the most underrated sound of their genre. Sorrow.

  • Lodge

  • @EmotionPlus i love the alarm and big country too and 80's U2.

  • I saw The Alarm in approx 1984 when the opened for The Pretenders in West Palm Beach area, or was it Billy Idol they opened for, in any event, they were absolutely tremendous, they were really going off in the house! I wish they would do another tour and come to Florida. There is so much spirit and intensity to their live performance.

  • great song, but they show their depth by singing "I am the antichrist" now in their concerts. they really were psuedo religous with all the messianic imagery.

  • what the fuck are you watchin it for then, you arsehole

  • what a knob gobbler u r spunkydrinkerqqqq

  • Comment removed

  • Mike Peters most be one of the best singers which have come out wales. And after the battle he had with cancer, he still keeps turning out for gigs.

  • Why doesn't anyone know them?

Or why did everyone forget them?

  • eh welsh cunts.seen them back up the stiffs inm glasgow in 97 they were welsh then too-bring out bells of rythme, best song ever, acoustic coal 4 ever?????????

  • K, maybe this isn't they're best song, but I agree, you people WAY under-rate this group. If you haven't heard Spirit of 76, then don't judge, okay?

  • Most consistently under-rated band of all time

  • Good call. I agree.

  • Best live band I've ever seen at Toad's Place in New Haven.

  • OMFG!! This song is the SH****TTTTT

  • ...I'll give you a thumbs up, cause this was the one song that sold me on them back when I was a teenager. (folks, he did NOT say that the song was s**t, but that the song was "the s**t", or "the bomb", et al)

  • They were an ok band, but only really hit it a few times. I don't think they ever lived down the early comparisons to U2.

  • Yep ~ I agree.

  • Scottish fan from Glasgow awesome

  • Great song !! THANX for sharing !!!

    Best Regards

  • Wrong time, wrong place, rather the Alarm than U2 any single day. If you differ your IQ is rather questionable.

  • @EmotionPlus I have a high IQ and U2 are the greater band and had scores of great songs, the alarm as much as i love them had no longevity so your comment is a little ignorant

  • The Alarm were such a great band. No one better live!

  • Why are there no concept videos of the Alarm?

  • nigel freakin twist.

  • nice lips sync!

To bad it wasn't live. What a phenomenol song!

    They Are Blatently Immigrants.

Get A Life Just Because You're Too Messed Up To Appreciate A Great Composition Doesn't Mean You Should Act Like A Dick To The World.
