this just didnt work at all. i spent 5hours trying to get re partition my phone. i just want to do the regular root through odin but the gb files dont even exist anymore since the government shutdown multiupload.
@tbarb13 Why were trying to partition your phone for 5 hours without any software? And why would you want to partition anyways? And yes, the gov took this down. But I have already put up a new video that matches all the forums latest way to root and keep all your data on Gingerbread. It should fix you up with no partitioning needed.
You are all having common issues. Look over all the other posts. If you have a fail, it is common, just download a fresh copy of the file and flash again via odin. If you have ROM manager on your phone it will break it. Remove that. I you flash via this method you should then go in and format, erase caches, and then install the apps fresh. If not you phone will glitch over time. If you want to keep everything follow my newer vid.
Ok so it worked, and it was working perfectly until today. It was in my pocket at work and the next thing i know its off. So i take the battery out and put it back in and turn it on. Now it just keeps flashing with samsung in white letters and doesnt get passed that. Just tried rerooting it figuring that might fix it but it didnt... any suggestions?
@BataleonStallion All fixes are the same process through odin or clockwork depending on the problem. Download a fresh copy of the file you flashed. Then flash the new file again as sometimes this comes with glitches. You could also flash the original stock from xda forums and then use an even more update method via my newest video if you like. This still works just fine also and is a little easier.
@BataleonStallion No bricked at all. The operating sys is just not loading. Flash it again the like in the video, but download a fresh copy from the internet first. Also, can you get into clockwork mod recovery? Phone off, hold volume up, the home button, the press power. When samsung appears release power, but continue to hold volume up and home. What do you see at the top? If you have clockwork (CWM) then I have directions for you...erase cache, erase dalvik recovery, restart

@cooldadyo Great! if you run into glitches it may be from the old data. Just format in clockwork and you will be good to go. If no glitches, just go with it and enjoy!
cant get past the cpmodem download during the process, soft bricked my charge. getting the phone/triangle/computer screen when i try to power on the phone. help?!?
@mF2LeVii You have the battery in or out? Would suggest a fresh download of the exact same Gingerbread file as they often have download problems. Also you can try a different version of odin. What version are u using? Do not worry as the phone is fine and just waiting for a good copy of the operating sys. We will get it to take.
@kraisydave thanks so much for responding so quickly. i have both the battery and the sd card out, tried multiple versions of both links in the show notes, versions 1.3 and 1.7 of odin3, and tried each of my usb ports in my computer
@mF2LeVii No prob. It sounds like the original file needs a fresh download then. Using the original USB cable? I can send you to another file if needed and then you can move on from there if this problem continues. It will put your phone in an older state, allow updates, and then I have even a new rooting method.
@kraisydave yea im using the original USB cable. At this point i think i would need to try a different file and rooting method. You can pm me if it's easier, i appreciate your help
also having a problem thats odd.... screen lock isnt working... i can enable it in the settings menu, and put in a passcode but then it doesnt work when you hit the power button.... for some reason some contacts arent syncing either.. i figured theyd be in the gmail account and the backup assistant.. ?
@willyboxc screen locks get funny with the charge ROMs. There are patches out there. I will have to look around. Google contacts sync only if they were backed up to the google cloud or if you used a third party client and did not erase them during the flash. I backup all my contacts to my gmail account so that they are always there. Also look at SMS Backup + for text message and call logs.
@cvamurfreesboro Must be a glitch... should work fine. What was your setup before this? Problem if u were running an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM. If not, try a power off and on. Then a reflash of a new download copy of the file.
Just wanted to let you know that your video was the *only* guide I've found on the internet that allowed me to root my Change and debloat it. Other guides left out crucial steps, like installing the samsung charge drivers! Thanks so much for making this guide, you did an excellent job here, and I hope you keep up the good work! (As others have also said, I'm still a noob at this process, but I am feeling much more confident after viewing your video and having success with your method.)
@Jabronimus Thanks for the kind words... My desire is to have everyone get the most out of their device. I am working on even more vids to cover potential details and problem areas in hopes to make it even easier. Thanks again.
Great video, and instructions. Worked without issues very nicely. From OTA 2.3.6. to debloated. Still a noob, but a bit more confident. Can anyone direct me to a good link/info on clockwork recovery?
@philglov CWM info can be found on xda forums. Do NOT use or install ROM manager. Breaks the charge. You do now have a version of CWM running if you did not know that. You can change CWM to another version, just read to make sure it is compatible. I cannot post links in this thread...sorry.
@kraisydave My noobs are really showing! I did not know CWM was already installed. Was expecting to see it in the boot menu. Flashed another compatible version without incident, created my first backup. Thanks again.
####update#### I was able to do this using odin 1.3 not 1.8..... 1.8 gave errors. I also could not use debloated_deodexed_ep4d.tar.md5 - this had me stuck on samsung screen for north of 20min. I was however able to load all_in_one_odin_ep4d.tar.md5 and become fully operational again. If it is of interest to anyone i was already running 2.3.6 @ time of initial failed root.
@mygoldteef Excellent info.. thanks. I have been collecting up the errors people run into to make a video of the most common Rooting problems. I will be sharing this info. Glad it all worked out for you.
@kraisydave final update.... after flashing all_in_one_odin_ep4d.tar.md5 I was then able to flash debloated_deodexed_ep4d.tar.md5. So i was able to accomplish my mission.... I just had to take the scenic route.
I gave up on my project to get it on my mac, ended up using my old pc which has a virus and can't even connect to the internet :D, but it worked, one thing I see is that you didn't mention that you have to download the samsung drivers in order for the computer to recognize the phone. I'm sure you mentioned this in your older vids but I don't see it here, and other noobs like me might not know what to do
@gartorfanjkt Glad it worked out... but no, you did not need to download the drivers normally since they are preloaded in all the Droid Charge phones. Simply connecting the phone should install the drivers. But like you, sometimes that doesn't work. Thanks for the tip. Also what is going on with you laptop? I may be able to help. Private message me on here if you like.
I have downloaded Odin from your link and also the debloated_deodexed_ep4d.tar.md5...I am following the steps but get a FAIL in Odin when it starts the writing process. Any ideas? I was running 2.3.6 like you. I am kind of stuck right now :/ Also, if it cant be resolved, what can I try to get my phone back up and running? Thanks
Having trouble, wonder if you could help. When i plug the phone in running odin, a second box populates with #COM# and when i star the process (being sure to click only PDA and leaving those other two boxes previously checked alone, not checkin anything else) it continuously fails. im running 2.3.6 on my charge and have tried both the debloated and the full ep4 pack. any suggestions would be helpful
@MW2extreme1 now it went through and completed using my desktop but my phone still looks the way it did before, does not appear to have changed anything what so ever and i cant seem to get a signal. any suggestions?? sorry to spam your wall so much
@MW2extreme1 You are fine... I normally an in touch quick, but busy till Sunday night. It will look very similar as this is not some fancy ROM. This just gets you started with rot access really so you can do cool stuff. Check your settings for a signal issue if cellular. If no luck then a flash again via the same process with a new download should fix you all up. You are rooted, just try a root only program like titanium backup..it will tell you. We will get you through it.
Went back and reflashed 2.0 and 2.1. Before I did this I deleted all my apps via titanium backup. But there seems to still be quite abit of info still on the SD card. Do you think this will still cause issues?
@TheMike9254 the SD card was always fine...it was the stuff in the operating sys where the problem was. You can keep whatever you like on the SD as long as it is not connected to the new sys while coming from the old sys. You apps thought they were on Froyo for example, but were now forced on Gingerbread. Backups on the SD card are not running on the sys. You should be good to go. Let me know.
I downloaded the files as you did in your video. I 1st downloaded 2.0 and installed and booted. the went into files and deleted 2.0 and then went and downloaded 2.1. Does there sound like there was an issue with the way I did it?
@TheMike9254 I see now... 2.1 is a patch to 2.0...no need to delete. But you sound fine... just have to remove the apps via a flash. Do the .zip in CWM again and do not install backups of the apps. Download them fresh from your google profile. If not still then go back as far as 2.0 and then on with the same process. I am real sure it is the data in the apps messing your world up.
So when I did this to begin with I downloaded the 2.0 and 2.1 versions of gummy to the phone via zip and did the installs from the phone. I did not use ODIN. Was this not correct?
Last thing I assume Tegrak will not work on this setup?? tells me I do not have a correct device. I found a post about changing the device ina build file. I looked at the file and it is set up correctly. What other suggestions do you have on overclocking? I don't seem to have the same bench marks coming from root with CWM.
@TheMike9254 Overclocking is only recommended by the Dev based on their version of the ROM. If you mess with their setup you risk glitches and force closes as they usually have everything balance and super fast. Gummy was the fastest, but is not long supported. And with your old app data hurting you, you will never get it clocked till you remove that problem. No restore of apps after fresh install with Odin. Wipe cache is not going to fix it at this point.
That's what I think I did. I backed up all and then went into recovery and wiped the data and rebooted and are in the process of adding things back. I have noticed 2 things that seem to keep occuring at this point. I cannot add a a certain custom ring tone to a contact (force closes) and I have 2 diffrent backed up contact files saved to the SD. The 1 I want force closes about 26 out of 134 contacts in. Ant ideas??
@TheMike9254 The files are bad and must go byebye... your just wiped cache,, not a clean install. You must use Odin and flash a clean install and NOT restore your apps. Restoring to a corrupted sys is all your are doing and the app data is breaking things even if you are not using the app as the app is using the sys in the background. Basically you just restored the problem each time.
I am having real baf issues with apps crashing and phone just locking up. I tried to add a ringtone to my wifes contact from the sounds menu and the process closes evetu time. Gummy 2.1 process worked just fone except for those issues. I cleated both caches several times. Any suggestions.
@mikenadeau9254 You have old crap still on the phone. You need a fresh install of the operating sys just to make sure you clear everything out. The new sys is glitching against old stuff I would bet. It also could just be one unfriendly app corrupting everything. I have had that happen.
Hello I would like to root my Droid charge but I have a couple questions. 1) Will all of the data on my SD card and all the apps be deleted? 2) This is for after the Verizon official gingerbread update correct? 3) How well does wifi tethering work on this phone?
@bigphillip25 There are several ways to do this. A different method other than shown here lets you keep all your data. This method in the vid can let you keep everything if you do not erase the cache, but you run the risk of having a glitchy phone that bogs down. So expect you will loose all data. Wifi tether works just fine via open wifi garden, but this process uses everything the phone has for power, so I usually restart the phone after much tether use. Verizon doesn't like this
@bigphillip25 You can always keep the data on an SD card...just reintalling it on some ROMs causes issues. Your contacts are always in google and will restore so long as you have been letting it store there. I cannot post links here. Go to Droid Charge Forums com and look under hacking guides...but I am having trouble with this version just for info.
@abristowful Bricked=broke forever. Yours is just blank likely. A little red or orange image appear when you power up? What operating system are you using on your computer? XP has been giving people problems. Try a fresh download of the same file to flash. Sometimes they download bad. After that there are more items to try like other versions of odin and even a different USB port. It must be on the motherboard generally.
@kraisydave I put the battery in and hit the power button while holding volume down, plugged it in when already had the downloading graphic on the screen and.....all systems go =)
@abristowful Glad to hear...keep me posted. You will have success based on all that have come before you. It will lead you down a path to a better phone.
Ok i did everything correctly, odin said it passed. I booted it and everything looked the same. not like a new phone. And when i turned it off and reinstalled the SD card and booted again, it talked to me in a bionic voice saying things like "Relapping now activated" and stuff like that. Is this bad? Or is it just pure awesomeness?
@Unleeshd You are good to go! Funny huh? How is everything working? You may need busybox and superuser apps from the market to run root apps. Try a root app and let me know.
@kraisydave Superuser was already installed on the phone when i went to the market to look for it, and it works like a charm! I tried out GameCIH and modified Drag Racing. Worked perfectly! Thanks a ton for the guide!
@Unleeshd Nope, but I will look around. I would suggest writing an email or old style letter to them to show interest. It needs to be profitable for them in order to spend the time on it. And not necessarily monetary profit, but really if many people will use it or not.
@kraisydave Well i have seen forums of people asking about it and it seems that there are TONS of people aching for it. Hopefully it's being developed but I will look around as well!
Quick question when I rooted the all in one kernal I did not flash CWM. If I want to changes ROM's will I need to restart the root procees all over and include the CWM or can I just flash CWM after the fact?
@TheMike9254 Nope, you should be good to go. It all depends on the ROM, but generally all ROMs are rooted. Some have different versions of CWM and you can always flash another version of CWM but make sure it matches the kernel you are using. Find this out simply by reading the posts you are taking the files from.
@TEXAZPITBULL Just flash the stock version fron xda developers in the Droid Charge Forum under development. I cannot post links here. About the exact same process that got you here. Backup everything first that you want to keep. Then do a factory reset and wipe the SD card just to be sure. There is detailed directions on xda. What happened?
@kraisydave I have a laptop running Windows XP and I haven't been able to download 2 of the 4 or 5 files on the Odin link. I downloaded them on my imac without a problem and transferred them to my laptop. Would that cause a problem?
@TDany79 It should not if the files are complete. Be prepared that your phone will partially erase during the process and possibly not lot the new file. Nothing is broke, but you may need to use a different computer to get everything to take. Older XP seems to be giving people trouble.
@kraisydave Did i do this right. ? I followed what you said i flashed Debloated/Deodexed All-in-one- odin_EP4D.tar.md5 in ODIN then when passed . I unpluged usb and placed the battery back along with the SD and Sim card. It booted up and it looks like it went back to my regular state
when i 1st started . like nothing happen i still have all my data .? and I Wipe Data after flash
-Wipe cache and Dalvik cache after flash Twice . thanks Janet
@janet6152 It sounds great! Try to use a root only program like titanium backup to check if you need anything else. You may need to download busybox and superuser. Let me know and glad it all worked for you!
Okay, I'm new to rooting/flashing phones, but I have decided to try rooting my droid charge with the 2.3.6 firmware. The only problem is that I have an apple computer, and I have searched all over the internet to find out how to do this on Heimdall and so far I haven't found anything. I know you posted a url for getting Heimdall, but I have no idea what to do to get it working on my Charge. I have also tried using a wineskin port of Odin and the phone isn't recognized. Anything I can do?
@gartorfanjkt I cannot post links here, but feel free to private message me on here and I can point you to some Heimdall info. Basically it is a cooler system if you are looking for a more techy approach. You must take a file you want to flash and break it down into pieces to put it in Heimdall. That is a bit of a learning curve there. I do not use Heimdall and just have my apple with windows dual boot. Maybe we can figure this out together. Look on xda developers for Heimdall info
@TheMike9254 You will if you erase your cache which can be needed. But if you do not everything stays. The problem is that there is the risk of glitches. If you are good to go then go with it!
@TheMike9254 Excellent. Glad you are good to go. Regarding your other comment.. you were able to power up the phone before. It is just that nothing was there because you erased it. The file you were trying to load was just not taking so the phone was remaining blank in its new state it would be in coming off the manufacturer line. Just wanted wanted you to know this as you will likely see the exclamation point again if you play around more. Again glad you are good to go.
I want to make sure that I am still getting the latest software avaliable. I am unfamiliar with there site. Is there a list I can pick from? I seem to have to hunt and search and get lost in the individual technical terms and not to mention the dead hyperlinks.
@TheMike9254 Nope, as this is all done for free by people called devs. So we work with what is there. I make these videos and collect up things just so the average user does not have to. But as you have seen it can still have issues. I just try to help and make it a little easier.
I am unable to turn the phone back on at all. As far I had gotten was the initial attempt with the Odin software trying to down load the kernal file. When the process failed to work several times with 2 diffrent Odin versions and 2 diffrent kernal files I tried to just boot the phone normally with the battery and got the above mentioned image.
I was unable to cut and paste the intire log. Would you like to see it? if so what do you recommend I post or send this?
@TheMike9254 Could be an issue. There is a thousand ways to skin a duck. So we have options for you. Play around with this method trying different things. But if you cannot get it to work xda developers has many more files to flash. Just make sure if you pick another it is a complete package unless you know how to piece one together. Just read the first post to see what you need. And feel free to write me if they use silly dev talk and you need a pointer.
@TheMike9254 Also wanted to add the the little exclamation point in the middle is a good sign. It means you phone is physically just fine, but blank. It is like new from the manufacturer. We just need to get you a file that will take.
@TheMike9254 Could be.. each of these are sensitive custom pieces. Everything must be just right. Did you erase the caches? That will get rid of your data so look out. But it may be what is needed.
@TheMike9254 Phone is talking to Odin and comp just fine. The file is just not taking during the flash. You need to try a new copy of the file, or a different version of Odin, or I can lead you to other files to flash at xda developers. When you flash a lot this just happens from time to time. The physical phone is just fine.
UHH OHH I just tried this and failed with 2 diffrent md5 downloads. I then tried to turn the phone back on and get a phone linking with a computer with an exclamation point in the middle. Am i screwed?
Well I went to the developer website and got the stock all in one and reflashed. I was still missing market...but looked it up online and was able to download it to my phone. I am rooted and have market again...so all is well. Good thing this was not my first time...lol Thanks for the video...however would you please update it by mentioning that your link is for NO Google apps?! Or can you please provide the link in your description of the Stock all in one? That would save some confusion.
@starwarsfanforlife Glad you got everything worked out the way you wanted. Yeah, there are two versions of this from the same link. One is debloated - meaning apps are gone. And the other is not. I did not have the market missing on mine. Maybe you just got a bad download. But for future reference you normally can just download the market app just like you can download the Amazon market app. I do not want to cause people confusion so I will update the notes to explain.
CRAP everything worked ok...when it was booting up and the screen came up asking for accounts etc. I started doing them and then added the SD card and rebooted. Now it says market along with some other apps are not installed on the phone. It has icons there that are shaded out and have SD in the corner..
Dave I made a comment in the Droid Charge forum asking how to do this without Windows set up. Do you have a video for that set up process? When downloading these links it often gets confusing what you really need to download etc. I just got my Charge replaced and wanted to root it so I could wirelessly tether to my iPad.
@starwarsfanforlife actually it was YOUR video that I watched to root my droid the last time I believe! (since I subscribed and liked that video)...lol
@jaquezponton Only follow this process if you want root access to the phone. A reason would be to run software you would not be able to otherwise or to get rid of the forced applications from Verizon. You can run tethering apps, backup apps, and many more with root. If you are happy where you are then staying put is an ok thing.
@TEXAZPITBULL You will need a couple of things. Download "superuser" app and let it run. This completes the connection between the rooted apps and the phone. You may also need "busybox", but wait and see. The root app such as "open wifi garden tether" will ask for "superuser" permission. Tell it yes and you will be good to go. This is the same for titanium backup and other apps. If it is already asking for superuser and you have the option to hit yes, do so as it is already there.
After following all of the steps from start to finish, including wiping the user data, my phone is stuck in a boot loop not with the eyeball, but with the samsung logo. Is this normal/how to fix?
@ThePopKultured It happens, nothing is wrong except that it just will not take all the way. It is almost there. You can try a new flashing of the same file, a new download of the same file, and possibly a different version of odin. These things can be a little picky. But basically a new flashing is likely required if wiping did not work. You can first try factory reset wipe and see what that does. Sometimes it fixes and sometime it resets. Let me know.
Mine failed twice. Phone is off batt is out sd is out. I had already had the OTA update. It had gingerbreak 2.3.6 on before the i flashed. I went to flash and it failed almost instantly. can you help me?
@parrish122485 An immediate fail means a couple of things... generally it means that the file you are trying to flash is bad. So downloading a new copy would work. Or more likely the version of odin is not happy with the file you are using. Try a different version of odin and get back to me.
For some reason I wasn't able to get the correct files while downloading from your links. Odin was not recognizing any of the files. I had to go to your older video and download the older rooted version for the droid charge. Odin recognized those files. I downloaded superuser and it ran, so I'm assuming I'm rooted? Any tips/advice for a new rooter? Now that I had to downgrade a version to root, will custom roms get me back up to newer versions? feedback would be great! thanks for the vids!
@bdon24 Yes, ROMs will change things for you. Make sure you find a "complete" ROM so that all you need to do is flash the ROM once. Some require multiple pieces. Find this out by reading the first port for the ROM by the developer as they usually post guidance. Let me know if you need help with their dev talk...
Thanks, a lot for posting! I love not having the crap verizon installs on your phone, especially blockbuster. By the way are you running a stock ROM or a custom one and if which? Also, if i wanted to install a custom rom would it be the same process but just loading the different rom for the pda file in odin?
@YankeeysRule319 No prob... I am testing a new rooting process on stock, but I do not like it yet. I normally run all kinds of different version of roms. I like GummyCharge 2.1 over Gingerbread. Also check out Humble. Those are the two best usually and most updated. Just read to make sure your phone is all set for it. Feel free to look at my other videos to including flash GummyCharge 2.1. Let me know how it goes.
Having a problem.. When I try to load up my phone it says in the lady robot voice " convert data partition, not enough space on partition" or it goes straight to CWM recovery screen with the little banana guy. Any ideas on how to get past this or is my phone screwed?
@CaoQaolian Far from screwed...just full. What was your setup before? Did you erase the caches? Do that again. If that does not fix it do a full factory rest from the same area within clockwork and start over..should get u fixed up. If that still doesnt work, let me know and I have a few more items for you to try. But really you are fine. It just means the phone is full and just has no more room...we must make room.
@kraisydave I just erased the caches again and did the factory reset. Still having the same issue. I'm not sure what setup I had before, this is my first time rooting a phone heh
@CaoQaolian What version of odin are you using? It must match as per my video and not be an older one. It is possible your download of the rooting file is bad. Try a new download of that. We will step through this till we find it.
I am using Odin3 v1.82. I just re downloaded the rooting file (the debloated and deodexed .md5 file, correct?) and used Odin to flash it. Still having the same issue. Also cleared caches and did factory reset multiple times.
@CaoQaolian There is a little step missing.... we can keep working on this or I have another method. You can private message me here on youtube. Has the eyeball gone back to the samsung logo or just sits at the eyeball? If just at the eyeball let it sit longer. If the other then we need to change some items.
@autiger817 It will replace whatever is on your phone. There is another method that I am making a video for. It will leave your phone alone and just root the current system you are running.
@kraisydave Most of us are just trying to root our phones for superuser....anything that would make this process more simple would be great. I still say that jail breaking an iPhone is MUCH easier than rooting a droid!
Thanks for the help Dave! Did anyone tell you that you have a strong resemblance to Adam Sandler.. maybe release a video of you doing the Hanukkah song for us :) Thanks again, and I am subscribed and you are liked!
@nottahification You are funny... yes I have heard that all my life. What else is strange is that I can sing similar to him. I have had a few standing o's for Ode to My Car. Maybe an Android song to a Sandler theme is in order. And I appreciate the support.
Hmmm, something went wrong... Everything seemed fine at first, but once I boot completely, I still have ALL my apps, even downloaded ones, my launcher pro settings, google account is signed in. Gonna retry again, see what happens.
@abhinav777 also, not sure if it was a fluke, but i powered down phone. insert SD card and powered on. The phone got stuck on the Samsung screen and started talking to me, saying it was doing a backup and other things. was interesting...

this just didnt work at all. i spent 5hours trying to get re partition my phone. i just want to do the regular root through odin but the gb files dont even exist anymore since the government shutdown multiupload.
tbarb13 1 week ago in playlist Phone Stuff
@tbarb13 Why were trying to partition your phone for 5 hours without any software? And why would you want to partition anyways? And yes, the gov took this down. But I have already put up a new video that matches all the forums latest way to root and keep all your data on Gingerbread. It should fix you up with no partitioning needed.

@thethereike1 Any luck yet? I would suggest a fresh download of the file to flash. Then if still needed try a different file to flash.
kraisydave 3 weeks ago
Again, sorry for the delay, I have been having lots of problems responding on here to individuals.
kraisydave 3 weeks ago
You are all having common issues. Look over all the other posts. If you have a fail, it is common, just download a fresh copy of the file and flash again via odin. If you have ROM manager on your phone it will break it. Remove that. I you flash via this method you should then go in and format, erase caches, and then install the apps fresh. If not you phone will glitch over time. If you want to keep everything follow my newer vid.

My account is broke as I cannot respond to individual posts for a week now.

BataleonStallion 3 weeks ago
My phone passed. But it said it was missing the clockwork thing... now its booting up all weird... how do i fix this?
BataleonStallion 1 month ago
@BataleonStallion All fixes are the same process through odin or clockwork depending on the problem. Download a fresh copy of the file you flashed. Then flash the new file again as sometimes this comes with glitches. You could also flash the original stock from xda forums and then use an even more update method via my newest video if you like. If you have clockwork (CWM) then I have directions for you...erase cache, erase dalvik recovery, restart

mF2LeVii 1 month ago
@mF2LeVii You have the battery in or out? Would suggest a fresh download of the exact same Gingerbread file as they often have download problems. Also you can try a different version of odin. What version are u using? Do not worry as the phone is fine and just waiting for a good copy of the operating sys. We will get it to take.
kraisydave 1 month ago
@kraisydave thanks so much for responding so quickly. i have both the battery and the sd card out, tried multiple versions of both links in the show notes, versions 1.3 and 1.7 of odin3, and tried each of my usb ports in my computer
mF2LeVii 1 month ago

willyboxc 1 month ago
@willyboxc screen locks get funny with the charge ROMs. There are patches out there. I will have to look around. Google contacts sync only if they were backed up to the google cloud or if you used a third party client and did not erase them during the flash. I backup all my contacts to my gmail account so that they are always there. Also look at SMS Backup + for text message and call logs.

Great video, and instructions. Worked without issues very nicely. From OTA 2.3.6. to debloated. Still a noob, but a bit more confident. Can anyone direct me to a good link/info on clockwork recovery?
philglov 1 month ago
@philglov CWM info can be found on xda forums. Do NOT use or install ROM manager. Breaks the charge. You do now have a version of CWM running if you did not know that. You can change CWM to another version, just read to make sure it is compatible. I cannot post links in this thread...sorry.
kraisydave 1 month ago
@kraisydave My noobs are really showing! I did not know CWM was already installed. Was expecting to see it in the boot menu. Flashed another compatible version without incident, created my first backup. Thanks again.

####update#### I was able to do this using odin 1.3 not 1.8..... 1.8 gave errors. I also could not use debloated_deodexed_ep4d.tar.md5 - this had me stuck on samsung screen for north of 20min. I was however able to load all_in_one_odin_ep4d.tar.md5 and become fully operational again. If it is of interest to anyone i was already running 2.3.6 @ time of initial failed root.
anywho, thanks for the video

@kraisydave final update.... after flashing all_in_one_odin_ep4d.tar.md5 I was then able to flash debloated_deodexed_ep4d.tar.md5. So i was able to accomplish my mission.... I just had to take the scenic route.
mygoldteef 1 month ago
failed no less than 10xs....
upon finaly getting the flash in odin to not fail my "coppying files to via" portion took north of 45min.
I now cant boot past samsung screen and cant enter recovery.

notaclue911 1 month ago
I gave up on my project to get it on my mac, ended up using my old pc which has a virus and can't even connect to the internet :D, but it worked, one thing I see is that you didn't mention that you have to download the samsung drivers in order for the computer to recognize the phone. I'm sure you mentioned this in your older vids but I don't see it here, and other noobs like me might not know what to do
gartorfanjkt 1 month ago
@gartorfanjkt Glad it worked out... but no, you did not need to download the drivers normally since they are preloaded in all the Droid Charge phones. Simply connecting the phone should install the drivers. But like you, sometimes that doesn't work. Thanks for the tip. Also what is going on with you laptop? I may be able to help.

TheMike9254 1 month ago
@TheMike9254 the SD card was always fine...it was the stuff in the operating sys where the problem was. You can keep whatever you like on the SD as long as it is not connected to the new sys while coming from the old sys. You apps thought they were on Froyo for example, but were now forced on Gingerbread. Backups on the SD card are not running on the sys. You should be good to go. Let me know.
kraisydave 1 month ago
I downloaded the files as you did in your video. I 1st downloaded 2.0 and installed and booted. the went into files and deleted 2.0 and then went and downloaded 2.1. Does there sound like there was an issue with the way I did it?
TheMike9254 1 month ago
@TheMike9254 I see now... 2.1 is a patch to 2.0...no need to delete. But you sound fine... just have to remove the apps via a flash. Do the .zip in CWM again and do not install backups of the apps. Download them fresh from your google profile. If not still then go back as far as 2.0 and then on with the same process. I am real sure it is the data in the apps messing your world up.
kraisydave 1 month ago
So should I just delete all the apps and just redownload from the market?
TheMike9254 1 month ago
@TheMike9254 Yep, but delete via a clean flash/install of the operating sys via the CWM .zip file.
kraisydave 1 month ago
So when I did this to begin with I downloaded the 2.0 and 2.1 versions of gummy to the phone via zip and did the installs from the phone. I did not use ODIN. Was this not correct?
TheMike9254 1 month ago
Last thing I assume Tegrak will not work on this setup?? tells me I do not have a correct device. I found a post about changing the device ina build file. I looked at the file and it is set up correctly. What other suggestions do you have on overclocking? I don't seem to have the same bench marks coming from root with CWM.
TheMike9254 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@TheMike9254 Overclocking is only recommended by the Dev based on their version of the ROM. If you mess with their setup you risk glitches and force closes as they usually have everything balance and super fast. Gummy was the fastest, but is not long supported. And with your old app data hurting you, you will never get it clocked till you remove that problem. No restore of apps after fresh install with Odin. Wipe cache is not going to fix it at this point.
kraisydave 1 month ago
@TheMike9254 If you have the right file you may be able to reflash from CWM also.
kraisydave 1 month ago
That's what I think I did. I backed up all and then went into recovery and wiped the data and rebooted and are in the process of adding things back. I have noticed 2 things that seem to keep occuring at this point. I cannot add a a certain custom ring tone to a contact (force closes) and I have 2 diffrent backed up contact files saved to the SD. The 1 I want force closes about 26 out of 134 contacts in. Ant ideas??
TheMike9254 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@TheMike9254 The files are bad and must go byebye... your just wiped cache,, not a clean install. You must use Odin and flash a clean install and NOT restore your apps. Restoring to a corrupted sys is all your are doing and the app data is breaking things even if you are not using the app as the app is using the sys in the background. Basically you just restored the problem each time.
kraisydave 1 month ago
I am having real baf issues with apps crashing and phone just locking up. I tried to add a ringtone to my wifes contact from the sounds menu and the process closes evetu time. Gummy 2.1 process worked just fone except for those issues. I cleated both caches several times. Any suggestions.
mikenadeau9254 1 month ago
@mikenadeau9254 You have old crap still on the phone. You need a fresh install of the operating sys just to make sure you clear everything out. The new sys is glitching against old stuff I would bet. It also could just be one unfriendly app corrupting everything. I have had that happen.
kraisydave 1 month ago
@mikenadeau9254 Consider a clean install from Gummy 1.9 as 2.1 was built over that.

Hello I would like to root my Droid charge but I have a couple questions. 1) Will all of the data on my SD card and all the apps be deleted? 2) This is for after the Verizon official gingerbread update correct? 3) How well does wifi tethering work on this phone?
bigphillip25 1 month ago
@bigphillip25 There are several ways to do this. A different method other than shown here lets you keep all your data. This method in the vid can let you keep everything if you do not erase the cache, but you run the risk of having a glitchy phone that bogs down. So expect you will loose all data. Wifi tether works just fine via open wifi garden, but this process uses everything the phone has for power, so I usually restart the phone after much tether use. Verizon doesn't like this
kraisydave 1 month ago
@kraisydave So whats the other method that lets me keep the data on my contacts and SD Card?
bigphillip25 1 month ago
@bigphillip25 You can always keep the data on an SD card...just reintalling it on some ROMs causes issues. Your contacts are always in google and will restore so long as you have been letting it store there. I cannot post links here. Go to Droid Charge Forums com and look under hacking guides...but I am having trouble with this version just for info.
kraisydave 1 month ago
@kraisydave Oh I see, so I dont have to flash another ROM I can just keep the Gingerbread that Verizon updated my phone with or how does that go?

@abristowful Bricked=broke forever. Yours is just blank likely. A little red or orange image appear when you power up? What operating system are you using on your computer? XP has been giving people problems. Try a fresh download of the same file to flash. Sometimes they download bad. After that there are more items to try like other versions of odin and even a different USB port. It must be on the motherboard generally.

Quick question when I rooted the all in one kernal I did not flash CWM. If I want to changes ROM's will I need to restart the root procees all over and include the CWM or can I just flash CWM after the fact?
TheMike9254 2 months ago
@TheMike9254 Nope, you should be good to go. It all depends on the ROM, but generally all ROMs are rooted. @TDany79 It should not if the files are complete. Be prepared that your phone will partially erase during the process and possibly not lot the new file. Nothing is broke, but you may need to use a different computer to get everything to take. Older XP seems to be giving people trouble.

Anything I can do?
gartorfanjkt 2 months ago
@gartorfanjkt I cannot post links here, but feel free to private message me on here and I can point you to some Heimdall info. Basically it is a cooler system if you are looking for a more techy approach. You must take a file you want to flash and break it down into pieces to put it in Heimdall. That is a bit of a learning curve there. I do not use Heimdall and just have my apple with windows dual boot. Maybe we can figure this out together. Look on xda developers for Heimdall info

And feel free to write me if they use silly dev talk and you need a pointer.
kraisydave 2 months ago
@TheMike9254 Also wanted to add the the little exclamation point in the middle is a good sign. It means you phone is physically just fine, but blank. It is like new from the manufacturer. We just need to get you a file that will take.

@TheMike9254 Phone is talking to Odin and comp just fine. The file is just not taking during the flash. The physical phone is just fine.

That would save some confusion.
starwarsfanforlife 2 months ago
@starwarsfanforlife Glad you got everything worked out the way you wanted. Yeah, there are two versions of this from the same link. One is debloated - meaning apps are gone. And the other is not. I did not have the market missing on mine. Maybe you just got a bad download. But for future reference you normally can just download the market app just like you can download the Amazon market app. I do not want to cause people confusion so I will update the notes to explain.
kraisydave 2 months ago

@jaquezponton Only follow this process if you want root access to the phone. A reason would be to run software you would not be able to otherwise or to get rid of the forced applications from Verizon. You can run tethering apps, backup apps, and many more with root. If you are happy where you are then staying put is an ok thing.

How come I can't get hot soot can you help me my has an app that say super user what I cant use hot spot
TEXAZPITBULL 2 months ago

ThePopKultured 2 months ago
@ThePopKultured It happens, nothing is wrong except that it just will not take all the way. It is almost there. You can try a new flashing of the same file, a new download of the same file, and possibly a different version of odin. These things can be a little picky. But basically a new flashing is likely required if wiping did not work. You can first try factory reset wipe and see what that does. Sometimes it fixes and sometime it resets. Let me know.

Mine failed twice. Phone is off batt is out sd is out. I had already had the OTA update. It had gingerbreak 2.3.6 on before the i flashed. I went to flash and it failed almost instantly. can you help me?
parrish122485 2 months ago
@parrish122485 An immediate fail means a couple of things... generally it means that the file you are trying to flash is bad. So downloading a new copy would work. Or more likely the version of odin is not happy with the file you are using. Try a different version of odin and get back to me.
kraisydave 2 months ago
For some reason I wasn't able to get the correct files while downloading from your links. Odin was not recognizing any of the files. I had to go to your older video and download the older rooted version for the droid charge. Odin recognized those files. I downloaded superuser and it ran, so I'm assuming I'm rooted? Any tips/advice for a new rooter? Now that I had to downgrade a version to root, will custom roms get me back up to newer versions? feedback would be great! thanks for the vids!
bdon24 2 months ago
@bdon24 Yes, ROMs will change things for you. Make sure you find a "complete" ROM so that all you need to do is flash the ROM once. Some require multiple pieces. Find this out by reading the first port for the ROM by the developer as they usually post guidance. Let me know if you need help with their dev talk...
kraisydave 2 months ago
Thanks, a lot for posting! I love not having the crap verizon installs on your phone, especially blockbuster. By the way are you running a stock ROM or a custom one and if which? Also, if i wanted to install a custom rom would it be the same process but just loading the different rom for the pda file in odin?
YankeeysRule319 2 months ago

CaoQaolian 2 months ago
@CaoQaolian Far from screwed...just full. What was your setup before? Did you erase the caches? Do that again. If that does not fix it do a full factory rest from the same area within clockwork and start over..should get u fixed up. If that still doesnt work, let me know and I have a few more items for you to try. But really you are fine. It just means the phone is full and just has no more room...we must make room.

@kraisydave I just erased the caches again and did the factory reset. Still having the same issue. I'm not sure what setup I had before, this is my first time rooting a phone heh
CaoQaolian 2 months ago
@CaoQaolian What version of odin are you using? It must match as per my video and not be an older one. It is possible your download of the rooting file is bad. Try a new download of that. We will step through this till we find it.
kraisydave 2 months ago
I am using Odin3 v1.82. I just re downloaded the rooting file (the debloated and deodexed .md5 file, correct?) and used Odin to flash it. Still having the same issue. Also cleared caches and did factory reset multiple times.
CaoQaolian 2 months ago
@CaoQaolian There is a little step missing.... we can keep working on this or I have another method. You can private message me here on youtube. Has the eyeball gone back to the samsung logo or just sits at the eyeball? If just at the eyeball let it sit longer. If the other then we need to change some items.

Will this work with a charge already updated to 2.3.6?
autiger817 2 months ago
@autiger817 It will replace whatever is on your phone. There is another method that I am making a video for. It will leave your phone alone and just root the current system you are running.
kraisydave 2 months ago
@kraisydave Most of us are just trying to root our phones for superuser....anything that would make this process more simple would be great. I still say that jail breaking an iPhone is MUCH easier than rooting a droid!

Thanks for the help Dave! Did anyone tell you that you have a strong resemblance to Adam Sandler.. maybe release a video of you doing the Hanukkah song for us :) Thanks again, and I am subscribed and you are liked!
nottahification 2 months ago

The phone got stuck on the Samsung screen and started talking to me, saying it was doing a backup and other things. was interesting...
abhinav777 2 months ago
@abhinav777 That is normal. It is a lady robot voice doing its thing. Just let it run as it is fine.
