My Mum loved this song and when i lost my Husband in Kandahar i played it and know that hes always there and i do see him just like the song says xxxx
Gustav Mahler had more than a little bit of involvement with this melody's origin. The opening bars are lifted practicaly note for note from his third symphony.
This is a beautiful version and comes in at number 2, but the number one and definative version goes to not crooners but to Dale Belmont backed by the legenary Ray Sinatra. This gem of a classical singer sings it in a way that is simply untouchable. If you ever get a change to see the vid or hear her sing it judge for yourself. I am a singer in my own right but Dale is in a class of her own.
It's on YouTube and simply beautiful, and so is she. Not much about her on the Internet except she does get a mention in the report of the House Committee on Assassinations in 1978 as she was associated with some who knew Jack Ruby.
Thanks so much for posting this gem, khankonchak. And thanks for your critique. I agree with you and feel the same about ."...and when the night....". A magnificent piece of work. Let's all "drink, drink, drink" to Mario Lanza. (For those of you who may not know, the "drink" refers to a song from "The Student Prince", sung by Lanza.)
Just fantastic as Mario Lanza is singing this beautiful song, all the feelings, all the emotions are there and we feel and say, yes Mario, we`re seeing you!!!
Beautiful very appropriate tribute. And a wonderful selection of photos, each a which more lovely than the one before. Congratulations and thank you for remembering this extraordinary man and tenor in October 08. Now this year, the 50th of his passing, let's hope all those who love him from the heart pay him many tributes next October.
It is almost impossible to believe let alone accept that this wonderful tenor died so young and so suddenly such a long time ago. His voice remains as pure, powerful and beautiful as if this song was recorded yesterday.
Oh, that's him with his wife and children! Lovely! I knew this hit sung by Sinatra, so it was such a (grateful) surprise listening to it through Mario's voice, for it was the first time!! Thanks!
When he sang songs like these..I find his voice so so charming..as a young boy I sang allong with a lot of his light songs...my ma thought I was crazy them
This song is touching. Betty Lanza (wife) died of grief months after Mario passed away in Italy. She was devastated and could not bear the loss. One of his grils died in a traffic accident, hit by a car, I think. One of the boys died of a cardiac arrest with the same age his father died. Lanza seems to have been a very lovely father. History tells he was a womanizer and a heavy drinker with no discipline at all!
he sings from his heart, he means what he sings and he delivers it so well with his incomparable style and voice that you feel like he is singing to you and only for you. tell me the name of any other tenor who can do all that.
Thanks a lot for this memorial tribute...my heart is deep of sadness that the world lost such a great tenor...the greatest ever lived! We will remember Mario Lanza FOREVER!
@lanzaobsessed No doubt his voice and singing were great. He, being unique, cannot be fairly or suitably compared to an ongoing struggler such as the very great Enrico Caruso - one who had to work for himself for a living, and then battle to build his voice from a not so impressive beginning. Lanza was supremely gifted by nature and then uniquely coddled by his doting parents - he was that once in a many billion fluke of chance.
I feel the need to tell you that i am deeply grateful to you for this tribute to Mario Lanza , who , as you write , died very young , leaving us to weep for his loss ! A Great Artist , a Great Tenor , with the full meaning of the word " Great " ...we will remember him , as well as Corelli , Maria Callas , Giuseppe Di Stefano , Pavarotti ..etc ..

Elvis Presley loved Mario Lanza, and Lanza returned the compliment. What a voice, and a great job on this song which Liberace made his own.

Sammy Fain also composed the melodies for Calamity Jane, with lyricist Paul Frances Webster.
Nobody sings greater than Mario Lanza, there's passion in every note.

I do love this particular performance.

Undoubtedly a unique superb voice. After having heard a song sung by Mario Lanza, one feels that all other comparisons are pale.
