@RedDwarfObsessive He should have been Captain before RD was hijacked by the nanites. Rimmer should have gone offline in order to preserve Lister's life - as per space corp directices

@Trek001 Except, as you should note, the crew being dead didn't change their position in the crew roster. Neither of them could have been captain, as neither of them were Officers.

As it stands, Rimmer is the logical captain in opposite world, because while if Lister applied himself he could be, say, chief of engineering for Spacecore's experimental flight program, Rimmer would always be a smeghead.
