Expert village is great; they explain really simple things in great detail, then gloss over all of the important facts:

This is hilarious. It's pretty common knowledge that putting a pea-sized blob of thermal compound on the CPU and seating the heatsink over it to make it spread evenly is the best way to go about it for any processor. DO NOT use your finger and DO NOT use a credit card. It can be done so much more efficiently than that. Not to mention your finger (if not covered by a latex glove or similar) will get dead skin cells into the compound and it won't work nearly as well.

Stock Cooler on Ceramic 50c.

Stock Cooler on Metallic 40c.

Zalmen 9900 on Cermaic 38c.

Zalmen 9900 on Metallic 28c.

These are EXACT temps for my AMD 6000+. My dad has one of the newer phenoms, he runs it stock, with metallic, on a zalmen 9900, with proper case flow, his is 30c base. neither of our computers go over 40c load. and you say there isn't a difference. LOL. do some tests yourself, don't read review sites, they are ALWAYS biased.

And i did a few tests. Ive seen difference like 1-2 Celsius. Thats why I'm writing that.

@asus3571 sure you can buy mx3, which not only had a little graph on its page, but it doesn't tell you the ingredients, for all you could know it has lead in it, and heating lead produces deadly gases. Now I'm not saying it had lead in it, but at least arctic silver 5 shows MAIN ingredients that effect cooling. The graph also doesn't show which processor it is on, hence it becomes useless.

Not saying its bad, but I'm not going to praise it just yet.

The cheap ceramic compound is what kills CPU's really quickly in PS3's, 360's, and laptops, when they get hot.

The silver based thermal paste is the best, e.g. OCZ Freeze, Arctic Silver 5.

And who the heck is gonna move 15CM to wipe the thermal compound (if it was silver based) on to the capacitors, Southbridge, northbridge or CMOS battery. xD

Citric Acid is what you want to use. Artic Silver Sells Thermal remover and Cleaner that Works F'n amazing.

Orange Glo also works brilliantly.

But i've always just used Spit and a rag.followed up by jewelers rouge for a smooth and polished base.

you are part right, depends on what kind of rubbing alcohol, isopropyl rubbing alcohol is the one she is talking about, they come in different concentration, the concentrated it is the better(best is 99%) you can use about 85% and up. i tryed using 70%, but it works like crap(p.s they use rubbing alcohol to clean your skin before needles.

Fuck that, in my old PC, thermal paste got dried out, it was just dust, so I got pissed of, I couldn't find it nowhere and finally .... HA .. I applied White Tooth Paste, That worked better Than I expected, It really does its job ... My advice to you is, If you got some thermal paste left, Don't Improvise !!!

Well there is Ceramic thermal paste out now thats non conductive and surpasses every other type of thermal compound out there. It's expensive as shit (12$ for 8 grams) but its worth it.
