  • is this for fighting or the excercise?

  • @andreanws It seems to the principles of the movements in Tai Chi. The fighting moves in Tai Chi are basically application of these movement principles.

  • Excellent instruction! There are many ways to do Silk Reeling... This is one of the best. If you do not have an instructor, this is the next best method. Developing Qi is the reason these "exercises" were developed many years ago. If you practice every day you will start to actually "feel the Qi" and carry that forward into your day.

  • if you want to learn tai chi get a teacher. You are playing with chi its not a joke. Tai chi is the way to enlightenment and overcoming ones limitations

  • Can i know the advisable amount of time that should be spent on each of the exrexcises in this video?

  • Very Nice smooth from centre, well done

  • i'm very confused about where to start i tai-chi, i have know clue, but i really wanna do it

  • You may start with this Silk Reeling practice.

  • thank you i also want to ask as i'm learning from dvds and get better, would the dvds help me in self defense, and teach me how to do so?

  • we have 4 videos on tai chi for self=defense. Just search for " tai chi application"

  • the answer is obviously NO my friend KendallChiq. DVD can only be a reference in your study. You need a sifu as you need ppl to adjust very minor mistakes or you'll get damage

  • @KendallChiq

You NEED a teacher ! The DVDs may help you if you forgot something, your teacher told you, but forget learning this only by DVD.

  • @KendallChiq If you can't learn how to do brain surgery from watching DVDS You can not understand how to do Tai Chi with out a teacher.

  • @KendallChiq videos are no substitute for a teacher

  • Best advice may be "just do it".

Find a local class, talk to some of the students. See how long they have been with the instructor. Stay for a class, if you can. Are people enjoying it. Does the instructor gently correct mistakes? These are probably good signs.

I love going to my Tai Chi class (18 months now) The class is close - so I go often, The class is enjoyable - so I go often. Instructor is dedicated patient and helpful. I feel the benefits.

DVDs are good. I own many, but class is better

  • @KendallChiq where do you live? Have you found a teacher yet?

  • After seeing some of these videos, I went ahead and bought 3 of the DVDs. It is so helpful to watch this instructor. I have studied for 6 years, and I can say that the way this instructor moves communicates the principles so well - in every movement, even these silk reeling warmup movements. His explanation of the energetic movement going on in the body was perfect for me - for once, someone can tell me what's going on in my body in each part of the movement. Excellent!

  • very nice, thankyou from mark

  • How is the breathing supposed to go along with the movements? (E.g. when should you exhale, inhale? Anyone know?)

  • It depends on who you ask and what type of tai chi you are practicing - if it's more like qigong, breathing is intentionally coordinated with the movements. However, it is not necesary to receive the benefits of the exercise - the movement is the emphasis. In other words, just breath naturally - don't hold your breath. Breath when you want to.

  • Aheyne, you're asking a good question [breathing ]and this is seldom publized. Only real master can teach and not too easy to plain student.

  • I think this is not only very practical and healthy in our every day lives, it is absolutely beautiful to watch. I for one will be watching all of your videos with pleasure. Nice work.

  • very good vid.

  • That's beautiful work. Question - at what point in Chen style training should a person begin Silk Reeling, and how much of his/her training should he devote to it (vs form practice or some of your other programs?)

  • Silk Reeling can be practiced before you start a routine. When you are comfortable with silk reeling, the routine study becomes easy. We also use silk reeling as a warm up exercise every class.

  • Thank you!

  • do you think you can put a url on this video so I can put on my zune because I really want to learn and havenowhere to lear it from.

  • Yes. It is easy to go to my website by click the url at the right side of this video. It is taichihealthways dot com.

  • Calisthenics!

  • what i think would be really really useful is if they would tell us when to inhale and exhale cuz i think the breathing is really important.but overall this is good video.

  • when u peng you exhale, lu inhale. so expand=exhale, and contract=inhale. :P

  • he has some dense chi

  • Good Detailed instruction. Silk Reeling is certainly

powerful stuff. He seems to know his stuff!

    StillnessofMind

  • temananui, yes. and also, these movements are for much more than warm up. They connect your motion with neikung if done right - producing abnormal power.

  • I train under temananui. He teaches Tai Chi, Bagua, Xingyi, and Liu He Ba Fa, and he teaches them very, very well. You can gain incredible chi just off silk reeling, the same way you can gain incredible chi from doing the bagua single palm change for seven years straight. It all comes down to how each Sifu teaches his style.

  • great internal qi... nice explanation of moves/inner energy flow!

  • great warm up exercises and also invaluable exercises for learners before beginning to learn the form.

  • useful details...thx.
