  • mantic i take back that comment this past christmas i bought a parker 22r praraso and a tweezerman shave brush i was a critic it is alot better then canned and cartidge stuff the only thing is the only blades i can find in the stores are store brand and wilkersons

  • Very informative video!

  • What do you think about using baby oil to prepare and hydrate the beard?

  • @edwardmars i have never tried baby oil, give it a shot and leave a follow up posting here for everyone to see!

  • @mantic59 Are you Greek?

  • @Robert5p3 no although I am often mistaken for a Greek person.

  • Mantic, Thanks for yoru highly informative videos. I would really appreciate your help in two key areas.

1-I am thinking about switching from the "canned goo" to a shaving soap. Can you recommend a good shaving soap for a newbie, which isn't expensive?

2- I always seem to have a few patches of stubborn hair underneath my chin (basically in the "crevice" where my throat/neck meets my jawline). Do you have any tips on how I can shave these areas without giving myself razor burn?

  • @Torretta13 see my "Where To Find Traditional Wetshaving Products In The US" video and my "Advanced Shaving Technique" video.

  • @Torretta13 van der hagen shave soap man its in every store you can find and its pretty darn good especially when u mix it with creams like prararso

  • I still use a fusion, but over the Thanksgiving break, I was at my parents' house and I was out of the shaving cream I had been using. I asked my dad if I could borrow his, and he said yes but informed me it was a brush and a mug. I said as long as it'd lube up my face and let me scrape the hair off, I didn't care. He uses a $5 brush and cheap pucks from the grocery store. With just that and not even a proper lather, I got the same avg closeness but it felt much smoother. I've switched.

  • idc what ppl say a razors a razor whether it has 10blades or 1 maybe bc ive never tried a de razor well until that time comes ill stick with what isay

  • @kantelier

At least give a DE razor or even a different kind of shaving cream a try. Coming from a guy with sensitive skin, the gillette canned cream always gave me breakouts. Then again, if you're not having any problems with what you're doing, then keep at it. No one's forcing you to do anything.

  • @kantelier Merkur HD: $40 EJ Brush: $40 Proraso Soap: $10 100 DE Blades: $20

Those were my costs. Far less than what you said. And in the end, I got a much, much better shave than I ever did with the crappy goo and razors that used unbelievably expensive cartridges. I saved money in the long run. Sure, it's more time consuming, but it's also more effective and pleasant.

  • @kantelier I understand what you are saying but you are comparing apples and oranges. Yes there is a higher initial cost to traditional shaving (though your price examples are kind of high) but the real cost savings is in the re-occurring costs. Fusion cartridge $4, DE blade $0.25. Since you shave your whole life the cross-over point comes pretty quickly, usually a couple years. Yes traditional shaving is more time consuming but its also more pleasant so you don't mind the time.

  • @mantic59 disregard my recent from then to now i switched to a DE razor and use praraso shave cream i was skeptical but now i understand no more fusions or canned goo for me

  • @kantelier Since when does gillette's blades last you a year. The blades go dull after 4-6 uses. And they are definatley alot more money than $15. the 4 packs are $15.99 and the 8 packs are like 26.99

  • @kantelier Lol no.

  • @kantelier That's funny, my entire start up for wet shaving set me back only $120 and that was WITH everything (A really good DE razor, a decent brush, shaving cream, pre-shave oil, stand, etc.) You just need to know where to find the deals. You can often find third party vendors with really good deals on Amazon or other online sources. New School is INCREDIBLY more expensive and produces inferior results. Old School takes time, but nvr has my face been smoother and less cut up since I started

  • @kantelier Yes you are correct they are faster but you wanna take your time when you shave especially since its your hair and you wanna look your best.

  • i like how u hate on canned goods trust me theres no difference

  • thank you mantic i love to shave now

  • lol noobs i love u ur so funny

  • thank you mantic and i agree with blacura123 completely if i have a son they will never use a multiblade razor ever

  • The mach 3 is ok and takes getting used to. I like the sensor but its limited in fancy aftermarket handles. The fusion has too many blades.. 5... wow

  • Just had my first wet shave. After years of irritation from crappy multiblades, I am extatic to have found your resources.

I will never shave with a multiblade again! If I ever have a son, neither will he!

  • Hi Mantic,

the arrows on the picture about the first pass (at 2:52) follow the grain on the picture's left side, whilst they go against the grain on the right side. Why?

Thank you very much for your outstanding video series.

Oh, and could you please tell use what camera and microfone did you use to achieve such clarity? Thanks again.

  • i did your method and i have to say THANK YOU the closest shave ive had

  • whoever invented 2:32 was an evil money grabbing shortcut taking basterd

  • 5 stars. Your videos are great and thanks to you My shavingskills is better than anyone i know.

  • what do you think about Edwin Jagger brushes?

  • manictrance- EJ brushes are very good and a good value too.

  • mantic i have a problem with my hair da only way for me to get a close shave is to go against da grain not with it am i doing something wrong because im tryin to do it your of buffin then doin a one step approach that causes me nicks and razor bumps

  • im the same way. what i do is go once with then against it. what razor do you use

  • i have a merkur 25c

  • Try just shaving across the grain instead. I dont shave against the grain any more and i dont have any kind of razor burn or cuts.

  • tru i try that and i still get ingrown hairs n i prep properly just like he says to do this is sooo confusing

  • Well just let your hair grow into a small beard so ur skin can heal up then start back shaving..never against the grain!

  • ive tried man my beard is weird my hair goes all over the place but ill try dis method

  • Icy- that was my problem as well

  • I've never realized how bad I was at shaving until I saw some of this guy's videos. Previously I had been treating it as a two minute job that I gave no thought to.

  • Mantic I got a Question....Seeing how Some of the shaving patterns for the face go against the grain isnt that a recipe for razor bumps? I do a pass with the grains then another pass sideways not exactly against the grain and I still get razor bumps! Might it just be my skin is Sensitive? or am I doing something wrong?

  • MrJuSt2FrEsH- Those pattern are *my* grain, yours will be different. The general idea is to find the way your hair pattern grows then shave with/across/against. If you still get bumps it can almost always be traced back to "overshaving"--either too much pressure, wrong angle, too many blades (is using a cartridge), repeatedly shaving the same area without lather, etc. After shaving try a final rinse w/hot water then wipe a pad soaked w/witch hazel across face.

  • This guy made me switch to a safety razor. I'll never look back.

  • Same here, I blame mantic59 for my empty wallet. ;)

  • Alright mantic! I'm glad your back in the game! I hope you are healthy and having a great time! Cheers!

  • what is your take on shave oil for the final pass?

  • razack0404- I'm afraid I've never tried an oil pass (hanging head in shame)

  • Always a pleasure to watch.

  • thanks alot

  • Oh yeah, don't forget the hair conditioner. I really need to try some of these tricks before my beard stops growing.

  • Just wizard! Stay with us while we inch towards better shaving through your videos!

  • Thanks alot for this! Also thought you stopped making videos. Is there any chance you can make a video about getting and maintain a trimmed beard? I know it goes against your other videos but it would be really interesting to get your view on it.

  • glad to see your making more videos keep em coming

  • another winner, thank you Mark!

  • Thanks for the tips! I hate shaving but your a time saver!

  • And I thought you had quit this. Good Job

  • Thanks Mantic59, because of your videos I have been traditional wet shaving for 6 months now. I love it. Your videos have helped me tremendously. I use my Grandpa's old Gillette safety razor and brush it on with Proraso shave cream. I will never, never go back to can foam and Mach 5000 razors.

  • Where do you find Proraso shaving cream?

  • target had it. best bet is to buy online from there site

  • Bath and Body Works sells it as "C.O. Bigelow Premum Shaving Cream" it comes in a green tube, inside of a green box.

It's $5.00 for the small tube, and $10.00 for the larger tube.

It's identical to Proraso, and even says it's made by Proraso right on it. :)

  • They Have the same cream but the name has changed in Bath and Body Works they go by the New name of C.o. Bigelow...same cream new name its great

  • Comment removed

  • The Proraso and the Bigelow creams are different. The Bigelow cream is made by Proraso, but it is a different formula than their eponymous cream. While both have menthol, only Proraso's original cream has eucalyptus. I got the Bigelow first, but it has gone unused since I got the Proraso. It's lather is a bit more on the rich side, and it doesn't dry my skin out as much as the Bigelow. They both run about $10 US, so the Proraso will cost you a bit more with shipping, but it's worth it!

  • I went a looked at it again, and it appears that the Bigelow cream does have eucalyptus oil in it. D'oh! I guess I'll have to have some crow with lunch today. :)

But I swear these things aren't the same. The scents, and more importantly the lather are a bit different, and I think the Proraso is superior. Worth the shipping cost and the short wait.

  • You can always find it on Amazon, just search for 'Proraso'. If you use your favorite search engine, you may be able to find a little bit better price. I bought a tube for $10 US + shipping, but it looks like the going price is about $11 US these days.

  • Oh I Did not Know that...thanks for sharing the information now Im going to have to order the Proraso cream to evaluate the difference myself lol

  • @TechTalkGuy Amazon.com

  • HE has changed Your life! Hallelujah brother! :D

It's like a religious experience. Godsend!
