  • I've played trumpet in a jazz band and loved all these tunes but also play the recorder. YOU SIR HAVE MADE MY LIFE.

  • Great Work! Both the transcription and the playing. On recorder no less. Your idea about transcription as a learning technique is absolutely correct and has been used by most of the great jazz musicians.

  • THUMBS UP If you got here after watching Katy Perry playing air recorder, --(her famous version where she pretends she's a recorder hero -

  • this is awesome, the recorder is an under rated instrument. Any chance I could get a copy of the transcription?

  • Holy %$#@!!!! Dude, that is totally unbelievable!! Thanks for the inspiration...now, off to the shed!

  • its a good thing only 8 people seem to be out of their frickin minds

  • Hey, you play the recorder like me, backwards. I have a missing right ring finger. Why do you play that way? So awesome to hear you play Coltrane...like opening a new door in my mind.

  • you are amazing

    regards

  • amazing!!!! whithout words, I play the saxophone and this solo is very dificult!!!! In the recorder impossibleeee!!!!

  • man, this must have been a pain to transpose.

  • oh great!! just Genius...what a technique and speed.virtuoso

  • Boring. How about some improvisation of your own?

  • Simply Outstanding!

  • Wow!!! Amazing...

  • Just can't believe a recorder can be played like this - the man's a god.

  • Superrrrrrr

  • pretty cool... never thought jazz could be played on the recorder!

  • Grande!!!

  • insane!! I cant believe...

  • i'm speachless. and going back to work.

  • I am speechless man.

  • sounds great, now i'd like to hear u improvise a solo on the same tune taking inspiration from this trane solo

  • Outrageous !! Really Great

  • Outrageous !! Really Great

  • Too F*cking Much !!!

  • me he quedado con la voca abierta de par en par.este tio me parece un genio

  • me he quedado con la voca abierta de par en par.este tio me parece un genio

  • That's one VERY happy piece of wood you are holding with all of that great music you are putting through it. I don't know of any other recorder that is enjoying the same pleasure.

  • OK, OK, I spent some time in college memorizing and playing this solo on tenor sax.... many hours actually.. many many many hours.... I I hear a few differences in the way coltrane played it. For example: 42: extra gliss. 1:16:extra note. 1:55: extra grace note.

For adding those extra few notes, I deduct 3 fractions of a point from his perfect 10 score. Thus, a 9.7 in my book.

Hahaha, ok, all kidding aside, this guy is a freakin' monster! A genius of the recorder!

  • @bt017 My God, 9.7 that's praise indeed! I'm sure Benoit will be thrilled! Shame people these days can't simply enjoy the product of hard graft and sublime artistry without the need to make the pettyest of criticisms. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone...

  • Uh, who really cares about the difference? The point of learning a transcribed improvisation is to become better at your own instrument. The differences between his version and the note-for-note original don't detract from the awesome playing. Who gives two cents?

  • ★ * ★ ★ * * ★ * * ★ ★ ★ * ★ ★ ★ * ★ he look like steve nash but playz identical coltrane interesting

  • damn. when will the album be released that I can purchase?

  • off the hook! wow!

  • That was off the hook. Talk about woodshedding. You had to spend some serious time conquering your demons to master that. Great work.

  • how can i get this music sheet for my sax alto sax

  • ★ * ★ ★ * * ★ * * ★ ★ ★ * ★ ★ ★ * ★

  • HELL YEAH! that must have taken some shedding - on recorder! props!

  • you definately have to stand completely skill to focus like that!!!! WOW!

  • That was so amazing!!!

  • This is an amazing performance. Flawless execution. Matched Trane's articulation, tone, cadence -- everything. It reflects a massive amount of practice and hard work. Well done.

  • im sorry... thats really kool that hes that good but as a sax player that looks up to John Coltrane i have a hard time taking this seriously

  • I'll bet John would have liked it.

  • Unbelievable ! Dude you are the Man !

  • UR the cat's pajamas, amazing transcription and you're half pressing some of those notes? incredibly difficult very skillful

  • Cara... pelo amor de Deus... vc é muito bom, eu tirei o solo dele somente dois corus, vc tirou ele intero..!! demais!!!

  • Is he playing with right and left hand in reverse position, or is it a photographic joke ?

  • I think-I may be wrong-that he shot the vid into a mirror, because the 6th hole appears to be angled the wrong way-like a mirror image. What a great player. Geez.

  • you can put it any way you want dude :P

  • Fabulous playing! Thank you for posting this!

  • Diiiigo. amazing de la ostia

  • Absolutely amazing!

  • I bet you can improvise just as good - but I like how you played this note for note, it really shows your skill, especially reading.

  • I am absolutely amazed that you were able to not only transcribe Coltrane's solo but also play it note for note. Something like this must have taken an enormous amount of time. And talent, of course.

  • what kind of recorder is that one?? is taht an alto recorder??

    pleas help me

    thank you

  • Yes, it is an alto

  • It's an alto recorder, yeah

  • so dam cool. a proud recorder player right here

  • This is really virtuous! Only, it does not sound, like a recorder. And why don't you improvise yourself. Only then it becomes really jazz!!

    Best wishes, Emile (Netherlands)

  • Perfect.

  • Realmente extraodinario, es una locura.

  • awesome and recommended to all jazzers or otherwise!

  • This is fucking amazing. Didn't know a recorder had that much range.

  • I know! I am speechless!

  • Simply awesome!!! Great job man!!!

  • Great! I don't think I ever have heard this kind of jazzy recorder. Well played. And "electrified"! Fun too.

  • My goodness that is fantastic. Where to you get that cool recorder mic from? That'd be super handy when playing with louder instruments!

  • This is Insanely Disgusting wow ==

  • Tem gente que chama flauta doce de apito ou brinquedo. Taí uma resposta pra calar essas infâmias.

  • almost sounds like a guitar playing alongggg

i LOVE it, not that i love guitars....or hate them,m....hmmm

  • Fantastic!

  • very nice...

  • Bravo !!

  • That's Dope!

  • ce l'ho anch'io il disco blue train.mi sembra una presa in giro

  • His hands are not backwards. The recorder is either MADE that way or the video has been reversed.

  • That's Some hot Playing. WoW. Trane is the best, to hear his solo's on a recorder gives it a whole new perspective. Thanks for posting!

  • You´re a genious !

  • He is holding it with hands reversed - amazing, since a sax would have left hand on top. Soooo - one wonders if this guy plays sax this way too?

  • That's the same recorder I have! I didn't know it could do all that... O_O

  • this is so awesome! you go dude!

  • He would a concretized his place a the greatest star trek captain

  • Jean-luc Picard i mean, if could have played like this guy.

  • I think that he missed a note on the 3rd beat of the 5th bar of the 2nd chorus. However, I'm not positive . . .

  • Does anyone know whether he's playing an alto or tenor recorder ?

  • Looks like an alto recorder to me.

  • He's playing an alto - left hand!

  • He's probably just recording in a miror. Not reversed hands.

  • wtf....... recording in a mirror? why would anyone do that? wouldnt you see the video camera next to him? people just dont think things through. all you have to do is turn the end piece on a alto recorder and, BAM its left handed. the only downfall is playing low F# and G# would then become almost impossible, but that wasnt a problem for this piece.

  • My webcam has the option of recording as seen, or as a mirror image. Some people do the mirror image, either on purpose or by accident. This is just a mirror image, without using a mirror.

  • holy shit

  • wow, that was fantastic. great work. I'd like to hear you improvise. But first how about Charlie Parker's KoKo, or... Eric Dolphy !

  • A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!!!

    GREAT!!!!!!!!

  • Incredible !

  • Fantastique !

  • this is unbelievable....amazing to say the least....

  • NICE!!!

  • This is fantastic!!! Somehow we can hear Coltranes solo even more with you playing along. What an amazing amount of work this must have been. Bravo Benoit!!!

  • UAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    What a sound!! Fantastic!!!

  • awesome do giant steps next

  • Really good playing. Now you should start learning an instrument that sounds good.

  • You're a dick.

  • really an asshole

  • Well, he's partly right - that recorder really doesn't sound good. I'd take a wooden one, or, if you can't afford that (like me...) than I can recommend the YAMAHA recorders (those in wood look).

BTW, are you really holding it on a cord? I wouldn't do that with a tenor, I even don't use it with the bass, if I can sit. It blocks one, kind of.

  • Dude, seriously. Shut up.

  • Incroyable! Je suis tombé en bas de ma chaise...le feel, la justesse, la précision rythmique, les "gosts notes"etc. Comme les anglais le disent si bien: practice makes perfect! Tu le démontre bien ici (en plus de ton talent!)

    Superbe!

  • I always thought recorders were diatonic, can someone explain?

  • you can overblow the fundamental to access more notes

  • okay awsome, are their any recorder players who were mainly interested in jazz in the old days?

  • un grande...

  • This is what i want to do on my alto recorder. Great job.

  • amazing man. thats amazing

  • That was fantastic!

  • What the fuck is this guy doin? He's must have a lot of time on his hands! Nice, though!

  • WOW!!! Cool man !!! Super! Bravo!

  • It makes me sad to think that I could only make one of those things squeak when I played it. Wayyyy to put all musicians to shame.

  • Is that a Yamaha alto? And when will you have the CD out with a band? I expect you would rip with a violin/recorder frontline, say with bass and vibes. Actually that would be more Eric Dolphy instead of 'Trane ...THIS IS OUTSTANDING!

  • Dude, this is motherfuc*(&¨%%* AWESOME !!!

    Congrats !!!

    Marcel

  • If you look closely, you'll see he is not really playing the recorder.

He is actually channelling the risen ghost of John Coltrane.

    This is amazing playing.

    And a lot of work!

  • Now let's hear it without the sax.

  • Amazing!

you proved recorder as a possible jazz instrument.

  • oh my god! the recorder being put to actual use!

5 stars just for that. I'd give you another 5 for playing Coltrane if I could.

  • Unbelievable and breathtaking! You are an outstanding musician!

  • How much would ure fingers ache!

  • oh man your very good. ive played a recorder many of times and i know just how odd and different those fingerings are!!! you must have been the first thing you ever played because as a saxophonist, i know that those fingerings are much different than any instrument ive ever seen before. hey, if you become famous, youl deffinetaly be the first!

  • damn u on it white boy

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Detectosoretes, cuando te detectes te suicidas,no cualquiera consigue tocar con perfección un instrumento sin llaves.

Eric, this is fantastic, very nice and fun!

  • wow!!! wow!!! wow!!! 5 thumbs up!

  • I thought Machiel Petrie was the best but maybe I need to rethink this. I have always had a sweet tooth for jazz. Great work! Where did you get the neck strap?

  • Wow!Thanks but you know,I can't play and I will never play like the very great Michala Petri or any other great baroque or classical musician.

I just try to develop my own style;it's certainly not the "correct"way that we "should" play the recorder but it's the way I decided to choose.

  • that song is hard on the saxophone with a very linear style of fingering, i can't even imagine it on a recorder!

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhh muyy wenaa musicalidad...

  • muy bueno.lo disfrute.

  • Incredibly awesome haha

I didn't think it'll sound that good honestly

  • this is by far one of the best things EVER!

seriously though, this guy rocks my world.

  • OHHH MY!! this is just awesome dude I all goes well with you..

  • that's incredible, congratulations!!!!!

  • That's an incredible amount of work.

  • lol. nice nice

  • Um dia vou tocar assim
