Great Work! Both the transcription and the playing. On recorder no less. Your idea about transcription as a learning technique is absolutely correct and has been used by most of the great jazz musicians.
Keanu Reeves plays a mean recorder. Unbelievable technique on a piece of plastic that would have never entered this realm but through this guy's determined hands.
Hey, you play the recorder like me, backwards. I have a missing right ring finger. Why do you play that way? So awesome to hear you play Coltrane...like opening a new door in my mind.
That's one VERY happy piece of wood you are holding with all of that great music you are putting through it. I don't know of any other recorder that is enjoying the same pleasure.
OK, OK, I spent some time in college memorizing and playing this solo on tenor sax.... many hours actually.. many many many hours.... I I hear a few differences in the way coltrane played it. For example: 42: extra gliss. 1:16:extra note. 1:55: extra grace note.
For adding those extra few notes, I deduct 3 fractions of a point from his perfect 10 score. Thus, a 9.7 in my book.
Hahaha, ok, all kidding aside, this guy is a freakin' monster! A genius of the recorder!
@bt017 My God, 9.7 that's praise indeed! I'm sure Benoit will be thrilled! Shame people these days can't simply enjoy the product of hard graft and sublime artistry without the need to make the pettyest of criticisms. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone...
Uh, who really cares about the difference? The point of learning a transcribed improvisation is to become better at your own instrument. The differences between his version and the note-for-note original don't detract from the awesome playing. Who gives two cents?
This is an amazing performance. Flawless execution. Matched Trane's articulation, tone, cadence -- everything. It reflects a massive amount of practice and hard work. Well done.
I think-I may be wrong-that he shot the vid into a mirror, because the 6th hole appears to be angled the wrong way-like a mirror image. What a great player. Geez.
I am absolutely amazed that you were able to not only transcribe Coltrane's solo but also play it note for note. Something like this must have taken an enormous amount of time. And talent, of course.
wtf....... recording in a mirror? why would anyone do that? wouldnt you see the video camera next to him? people just dont think things through. all you have to do is turn the end piece on a alto recorder and, BAM its left handed. the only downfall is playing low F# and G# would then become almost impossible, but that wasnt a problem for this piece.
My webcam has the option of recording as seen, or as a mirror image. Some people do the mirror image, either on purpose or by accident. This is just a mirror image, without using a mirror.
This is fantastic!!! Somehow we can hear Coltranes solo even more with you playing along. What an amazing amount of work this must have been. Bravo Benoit!!!
Well, he's partly right - that recorder really doesn't sound good. I'd take a wooden one, or, if you can't afford that (like me...) than I can recommend the YAMAHA recorders (those in wood look).
BTW, are you really holding it on a cord? I wouldn't do that with a tenor, I even don't use it with the bass, if I can sit. It blocks one, kind of.
Incroyable! Je suis tombé en bas de ma chaise...le feel, la justesse, la précision rythmique, les "gosts notes"etc. Comme les anglais le disent si bien: practice makes perfect! Tu le démontre bien ici (en plus de ton talent!)
Is that a Yamaha alto? And when will you have the CD out with a band? I expect you would rip with a violin/recorder frontline, say with bass and vibes. Actually that would be more Eric Dolphy instead of 'Trane ...THIS IS OUTSTANDING!
oh man your very good. ive played a recorder many of times and i know just how odd and different those fingerings are!!! you must have been the first thing you ever played because as a saxophonist, i know that those fingerings are much different than any instrument ive ever seen before. hey, if you become famous, youl deffinetaly be the first!
