Great episode. As for the name changes in Saiyuki/Alakazam, you have to remember what the US was like at that time. Segregation and Jim Crow were still being enforced in the deep south at the barrel of a gun. Americans were freaking out over the idea of a...gasp!...Catholic President! Hell, Elvis Presley swung his hips on national TV, and the country practically melted down. So it's understandable why any references to Asia or Buddhism would be removed.
this is awesome.....I used to dance around my living room couches singing this stuff when i was five years old. I still can remember the words .....aliky aliko alikazamm ,,,,care free and happy ...that's what I am ...if you want sunshine all the day long....sing this happy song.....
i talked to Peter about this recently, and he was NOT to be billed for the voice acting, it was all for Frankie. he said it was the worst kept secret in Hollywood. except for the moron Medveds who didn't bother to research that movie. Peter also wrote the English script for many of the movies and shows he dubbed with Titan/Titra studios.
this is one that should get a nice DVD treatment while Peter and Frankie are still alive.
The reason why names were changed like Booda being changed to King Amoad is because the Japaneses aren't very good at inventing their own things or their own characters.
As for Peter Fernandez, he's not mentioned because he probably wasn't well known back when this movie was made.
BTW I have a couple of suggestions on what shows & movies to talk about next, that's a cartoon show called "Dinosaucers" & an anime movie called "Bagi, the monster of mighty nature". Those 2 were only out on VHS.
I know who the narrator is, it's Sterling Holloway, he was voice actor for Walt Disney who did the voice of Winnie the pooh.
Your right that Peter Fernandez did the voice of Alakazam, but when you showed the scene where he's singing at 1:27-1:39 that's not Peter Fernandez singing, Alakazam singing voice was done by Frankie Avalon.
When I was a boy they used to show this on tv at least once year, and I loved it. I was major bummed when it stopped being aired. I still think about it and it brings back fond childhood memories.
look it up on IMDb, it says hes coming out as a race announcer. and i heard the new speed racer song and it sux, i think the brat or missy elliot sings it, why made it all hip hop, it should have been done by a rock band
I'm confused. I was under the impression that Alakazam's voice was done by Frankie Avalon, and that's who is singing the songs. What's up with this? They obviously changed the name of Buddha since they didn't want to offend the arrogant Christian population of the US.
I thought they changed the name of Buddha because they didn't want to offend the entire Far East by portraying someone's God as a cartoon super-hero. It would be like having the Power Rangers, with Special Guest, Jesus! Woohoo, can he kick ass! Jee-SUS!
Haha, well, usually the Taoists and Buddhists aren't offended by such things like "other" religions! They usually view laughter as part of the great Tao. In fact if you go to a Chinese bookstore you will see tons of comic books telling stories of Buddha and the religious Taoist pantheon of gods and heroes.
thats dragonball the ancient chinese story line of the manga or was it the ancient story from india? i forgot. but fuck yea peter fernandez from speed racer he rox especially when he sang the song too, plus hes coming out in the live speed racer movie as the race announcer
You said all I wanted to say about this version of Journey to the west, Although some people misundertand like (VladtheEmailer), you didn't said that she was Buddha's wife, you said King's wife...
Excelent Review ,,,,,,,
(*I wished to obtain a japanese version (named .. Son Goku.. which it's Ok) and do the subtitles of this anime, but It's very difficult to find.)
Great research, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the reference in the animation to Walt Disney's Fantasia (Night on Bald Mountain). Also, that's not Buddha's wife, it's the Goddess of mercy Guan Yin.

Buddha, not Booda and I believe the names were changed because of it being a Buddhist story not because Japanese can't invent their own characters.
heishirosama 2 years ago
@Raptormon132 The REAL reason they were changed is because US audiences wouldn't know who Buddha was. Also, Buddha is pronounced Booda.
