I'm reading the comment I posted four months ago and realizing what a dick comment it was. Sorry bout that. I recently cut myself pretty bad making some stuff and guess I got a good dose of humility. Anyway keep doing what you love and accidents happen. Sorry about being a dick.
There is a purpose with that flap at the end. It's not there just because it's hard to make the sheath without it. The original Lappish people had it in their sheaths because it makes the whole knife with its sheath move and weave less when it's actually hanging from your belt. Originally it was bigger than that. It does work with the original Finnish long knife and its big sheath.
I usually look for the positives but sir you need to reevaluate your knife skills, and maybe look into the proper knife for cutting your leather. I have favorite knives. But they make a razor knife with a rolling blade that is very easy to use and control with perfect cuts every time. look into it PLEASE. The whole time I was hoping the blade would not slip. Lay the blade down off the tip if it is proper sharpened it will slice first time
@tonymengela Lol, yeah, bad news. I kept biting my lip and imagining the blade taking a chunk out of his forearm.....I appreciate the demos irishguy80 but please check into proper knife holding positions/techniques when cutting materials like dry leather. At the very least, use the edge, not the point. Pick up some heavy duty exactos or rolling blades which will be much more suited for the job and far less dangerous. At any rate, thanks for the demo and instructions.

The Hole at the bottom also helps water drain from the sheath.

Your hand is still bleeding. Your knife worked pretty well on your skin, but not on the cow hide.

I agree with the straight edge idea. You should have waited until your hand healed and then gave up playing with knives altogether!

ya, fish tail is a good name for that part
donncapone 2 years ago
you should use a straight edge when your scoring that out and avoid going off onthe in side of the sheath
