this is just the show to be debating ray comfort on since these guys have lots of experience (pun lol) talking with people who basically preach/ramble and not listen whereas other debating atheists are more prepared for more open-minded theists and rely on having the other person listen and give their response taking into consideration what they just said.
Can anyone use the scientific method to tell me what is is that Makes a person alive? And what happens to that thing that makes people alive at the point of death?
@ljfergg its your conscious that makes you a self aware being. That consciousness is the end product of the mind. The mind is the end product of various biological substrates that allow you to navigate within the environment. And when someone dies, that consciousness goes the same place it was before the person was born. Gone. Thats why some think that you gotta make the most of life while you have it.
@ljfergg "Can anyone use the scientific method to tell me what is is that Makes a person alive? "
No, because the scientific method is a process, not a book. What makes a person alive is the interaction of living cells within their body. As for the point of death, what do you mean as there are several definitions of death ( brain death, heart stopping, or the point at which all cells within the body stop working ).
bananas? Sorry, when i first saw the video of his about that i thought to myself. Realy? Those things are awfull to my taste, i guess i "overdosed" on them when i was younger.
I know it's fun to rip on him (that stupid banana), but I think Ray Comfort is a class act. In every debate in which I've heard him, he's always courteous and keeps his cool even when tempers start to flare. He's one of the few christians that comes off as genuine and seems to actually care about the spiritual well-being of the atheists he's debating. That being said, Matt and Russel KILLED him in this debate and left him completely befuddled, which is fairly rare for Ray. Great job guys!
Did you know the word "chocolate" and "dog poop" are synonymous in the bible? He said: WHAT?!, I said Yes! It is, they are interchangeable ... Well everybody loves "chocolate", so everybody loves "dog poop". And guys: IT'S NOT A SEMANTIC TRICK!
This is as close to an example of a theist caring more about defending his religion than caring for the truth as you can get. This is the deference between religion and science. Science doesnt need to be defended. If science is proven untrue it changes to fit the new version of true based on the evidence. Most of religion cant be proven one way or the other but on occasion when religion is disproven, it continues on and ignores all evidence and appeals to faith/fear of hell/etc.
If you, Ray Comfort, would do all your list of what you claim atheists would do absent faith, I would hope you keep your faith rather than unloose your newly found atheist behavior.
Oh? You wouldn't do THOSE things even absent God? Really? Hmph.
He thinks he has had a personal revelation! I've had a revelation, too. It's just for grins and giggles. This guy makes me giggle. That's a comfort I suppose.
When I got to the bit where Ray Comfort claims doesn't like 'blind faith' I wondered if the rest of the video was worth watching - just for the sheer comedic value.
Ray says the banana is the perfect fruit and proof of god. Well the mushroom is also the work of god and it's great in a salad or on steak. Although, of course, there is the tiny problem that some wonderful looking mushrooms will kill you if you eat them. I'm sure there is an explanation for that. God...over to you for the explanation of that incredible oversight. God??? God???

Based on the amount of creationists I encounter who reference Ray Comfort,I was expecting much more. This guy is a joke. I've never seen someone who was in a worse position to be criticizing science, especially on the level he does. My niece in grammar school has a far better understanding of nearly every aspect of the natural world than this intellectual infant. Mr. Comfort needs to be placed in a convalescent home, where he can sit in the corner and spout his sad, pathetic lines all day long.
@trashbash2001 i think it's like any other human ability, if you do it long enough you'd get better. Clashing with idiots all the time, makes you immune at some point.
@trashbash2001 i know what you mean, i too have developed an array of new arguments against it, but frankly there are so many that i am thinking of making a list, that will include philosophical arguments, scientific and contradictions.
29:15 Matt says "..... we know that the languages Italian and Spanish are derived from latin, correct?" Ray says "I suppose so, I'll trust you." Then Matt goes on to flesh out a very applicable analogy between languages and evolution and Ray agrees with his logic. I was waiting for Ray to ring in with the tower of babel story that laughably is the bible's explanation for the diversity of earth's languages. But no, he just nodded along.
Right in the beginning Ray told Russell that he wasnt resurrected. How does Ray know?. Can he prove that Russell didnt die and was ressurrected last night?
Honing in on the part of the discussion about slavery, it is ironic and true that the Bible had a role to play in the abolition of slavery as well, because black people then had to use what they knew-religion- to help themselves become free. there's also the part it played in the Civil rights movement with people like Martin Luther King. so let's not forget that either. not necessarily arguing against the points made because I agree there anyway but there is that essential sometime addendum.
I agree in essense, but I'd argue that there's no reason to think that any humans are "born" religious. Some are raised/indoctrinated within a religious environment or later feel some need to join one. I was actually christened into the Church of England as a baby, but I'm not really sure why since I wasn't raised christian and my younger sister wasn't christened. Maybe the last gasp of a local community tradition. I've never actually been a theist as far as I can remember .
Wait, why does the fact that it doesn't require "deeds" make Christianity more valid or more desirable than other religions? And what does that even mean? I thought he said that sinners go to hell. That sounds like it relies on deeds to me. But I guess he just means that the most important thing is the believing, not the deeds?
The other funny thing that Comfort said about the banana is that it is colour coded specifically to tell humans when it's ready to eat. Green - not ready. Yellow - ready to eat. Brown - too late. Quite apart from the fact that a blind man can feel if a banana is hard, squishy or in between, he doesn't seem troubled by the fact that fruit and veg come in a variety of colours. Maybe he never eats his greens until they've turned yellow and thinks anything red, brown or purple has gone off?
@BigEnos01 - I wonder how he would react to seeing someone eat a red or green bannana... Why does he not care about scientific research and development?
Yes, it's as if he'd never heard of Red Dacca bananas, almost as if he was making ignorant proclamations. Smaller and plumper than his beloved Cavendish banana, they are even softer and sweeter, apparently with a slight raspberry-banana flavor. They sound delicious, but because when ripe they have a reddish purplish skin, Ray would think that his god was indicating that he should throw them away. Poor sod.
@BigEnos01 I fell truelly sorry for the man... If only he knew how to use his brain a little more... Why in the world he would write a book called "you can lead an atheist to God but you can't make him think." It seems so Ironic that it should be the other way around, "you can lead a christian to science but you can't make him think."
There's a video to the right where Dawkins mocks his banana silliness, particularly when he mimes how it fits in the hand and points at the mouth (of any primates). Poor old Ray also seems to have also overlooked how well 'The atheist's nightmare' was 'designed' to fit into other human orifices. He really should have done some research, there's plenty of videos on the web where very nice girls demonstrate how his god would have had some decidedly unchristian desires.
I wonder if he's ever tried to eat a wild banana (the non-sterile type that isn't selectively bred by humans for human consumption)? He'd find it's large hard seeds and fatter shape (that doesn't point at his mouth) less 'handy'. You could also ask him how conveniently available even they would be to anyone that doesn't live in the tropics if humans hadn't created a worldwide export trade. I personally prefer the way more inconvenient pineapple and (like Russell) a nice steak.
It is so mindblowing to see Ray (dis)Comfort being completely smashed in every argument he makes, and still refuse to just open his mind a bit. He is sort of a deadly mixture of arrogance and ignorance.
Y'know... I think Ray Comfort is actually a very nice guy, he doesn't feel as judgemental as say Kent Hovind. I expect that I could have a very pleasant conversation with Ray if I were to contact him.
And he's nice ^_^
This is a very civil episode, and I quite like it ^_^
Holy SHIT! This poor, poor simple man is bereft of any actual scientific knowledge. Geez, even if I were a theist I'd still be embarrassed by this guy.
DID YOU KNOW THAT RAY HAS THE ORDER OF THE PINEAPPLE WITH KOLOA BAR AND RIBBON FROM HIS OWN CHURCH : THE HIGHEST ORDER THAT A CHURCH CAN BESTOW. THEY MAINTAIN HE IS THEIR CHAMPION IN ALL MATTERS CREATION.
AND NOT A ONE OF THEM HAS TRIED TO SAVE HIM FROM THE BLAST OF PUBLIC OPINION. THE BISHOP OF CANTERBURY CONFERS WITH HIM DAILY AND HOLDS HIM DEAR A' HALFPENNY.
It makes my mind numb when comfort says that leaves and sand and all these things came from nothing... As if a scientist believes that the earth just popped into existence right after the big bang...
@ScarsFTW creationist have no concept of time. billions of years means nothing to them. transitional forms happen one by one. but in their minds, god snaps his fingers and a wolf gives birth to a great dane, a pit bull, and a shii tzu all in the same litter.
How does Ray know that there was once nothing? If he asserts there was once 'nothing' then i suggest he defines what nothing is because currently nobody ever has and all the evidence suggests 'nothing' does not exist.
If a human mind, or any known mind, does not have the ability to create a grain of sand - then asserting that another kind of mind could create a universe is a logical non sequitur.
It seems that you are correcting someone's spelling of electricity so I'm sure you won't mind if your spelling is corrected too. It's elec-tric-ity, not "elect-tric-aty".
wow... Banana Man doesn't have "faith" in evolution but he has "faith" in a big daddy in the sky. That's really special. But then again, was anyone expecting him to change his mind. A debate with a stupid fundy is an obviously useless task.
Banana Man knows god, and he met him at 1h30 in the morning on April 21, 1972, back in the days when there was primo LSD going around.
""Evolution is not a science. It begins with a belief that is so broad you can easily drive a 747 through it."
That's the main problem that intelligent design/creationism has and it's a problem it has systematically been unable to overcome ever. Evolutionary science has no such problem. You're simply projecting.
My hypothesis is, then, that such "religious" exp. temporarily suspends part (in Ray's case) of your enculturation and emo-baggage allowing you to see like a child - feel and BE without weight. This is Ray's desperation, for us to exist without deep and subtle agony that we are numb to. He love's us like only a child can and will NEVER give up. Yet since his awakening was partial and science still doesn't have validating explanations for these occurrences. He defaults to a terrible medieval view
I have had a mind blowing mystical experience. On average it changed my life for the better but made it hard because only those who have tasted this get it. I directly understand this much of what Ray is saying and applaud him for some of his efforts. But! I was never brought up in a religious household and enculturated into pre-modern interpretations of this experience. Thus it is obvious to me that science is the best truth producing method we have and I use it help explain my situation.
@Dionysus5252 The same could be said about anybody who makes money out of religion. Which is every Vicar, Priest, Bishop, Arch-Bishop, Pope (or equivalent in other religions). They don't all make millions, but they make their living by spewing out lies to 'sheeple' and the higher up the ladder they climb, the more money they earn.
@Zentz29 A lot of their episodes have repeat points, but various different people and wordings of arguments, and certain victories, and so on, will convince a wider variety of people.
The "random accident" explanation does not exist. Evolutionary theory describes the evolution of new lifeforms in terms of physical, biochemical and biological processes - not random chance.
Ray Comfort's approach to science and evolution (ie reality) reminds me of the iconic scene in the film Days of Wine and Roses, in the greenhouse. The alcoholic protagonist (Jack Lemon), is sure there is a bottle of whiskey in there and that's all he's interested in. So he begins by pulling up a few plants. No, not there. So he pulls up more, then more. Eventually he has wrecked the entire greenhouse. He didn't give a damn about the greenhouse, it was only the whiskey that mattered to him.
The whole argument can be stated quite simply. Ray Comfort believes that the most ironclad facts are those that can never be questioned. Atheists believe that all facts should be subject to disproval, or we can't call them facts.
lol, its like they are talking to a brick wall, they keep comming up with arguments that defeats his arguments, but he just keeps repeating the same things over and over and over... must be incredibly frustrating to talk to people like ray, no matter how many arguments you win, no matter what you say, you still lose in the end due to their pure faith on something based on nothing, ancient brainwashing and mass control. (suffering people = happy, if convinced they will go to heaven when they die)
"yeah look at this beautifull creation with flowers and fields" yeah, and look to the left where you`ll see a baby antelope bieng ripped apart by a pack of wolves,or termanily ill person coughing up blood,or a an erupting volcano destroying everything within a mile radius!is the world beautifull?yes, but it also a mean and nasty place where u neeed to fight for your place to exist, just like we have for millions of years with no help from anything other then science witch has made our lifes easier!
Ray Comfort's demand for a transitional form looking like the crocoduck is like wanting to see a transition between a baby and an adult which looks like a baby's head on a grown-up body!
I cannot begin to grasp how stupid Ray Comfort's claims are.
Yay!!! Thanks for the creation, Big Guy!!! The tapeworms, anthrax, Ebola, cancer, and hurricanes are great!!!

Why in the world he would write a book called "you can lead an atheist to God but you can't make him think." It seems so Ironic that it should be the other way around, "you can lead a christian to science but you can't make him think."
Thenewfallingsacred 2 weeks ago
@Thenewfallingsacred

Ask him about a coconut.
wjarnock44 2 weeks ago
@wjarnock44

How does Ray know that there was once nothing? If he asserts there was once 'nothing' then i suggest he defines what nothing is because currently nobody ever has and all the evidence suggests 'nothing' does not exist.

And since then he's believed in THOUGHT CRIME.

""Evolution is not a science. It begins with a belief that is so broad you can easily drive a 747 through it."
That's the main problem that intelligent design/creationism has and it's a problem it has systematically been unable to overcome ever. Evolutionary science has no such problem. You're simply projecting.

SeedsOfHatred 3 weeks ago
My hypothesis is, then, that such "religious" exp. temporarily suspends part (in Ray's case) of your enculturation and emo-baggage allowing you to see like a child - feel and BE without weight. This is Ray's desperation, for us to exist without deep and subtle agony that we are numb to. He love's us like only a child can and will NEVER give up. Yet since his awakening was partial and science still doesn't have validating explanations for these occurrences. He defaults to a terrible medieval view
pgod45 3 weeks ago
I have had a mind blowing mystical experience. On average it changed my life for the better but made it hard because only those who have tasted this get it. I directly understand this much of what Ray is saying and applaud him for some of his efforts. But! I was never brought up in a religious household and enculturated into pre-modern interpretations of this experience. Thus it is obvious to me that science is the best truth producing method we have and I use it help explain my situation.

Bwahahahahha!!! poor, poor ,gullible atheists ;p) !!.
Clearly, Ray Comfort is a 100% atheist -- Who, happens to be a con artist and, "knows" how to defraud his brainless followers out of their money.
Does anybody really how much the man is worth??.
I bet, after he hanged up the phone that he was laughing his ass off -- probably calling Matt and Russell 'suckers'.
Too bad some of us have pesky "morals" and do not take advantage of the 'sheeple' out there and make a living like he does.
Dionysus5252 3 weeks ago
@Dionysus5252 The same could be said about anybody who makes money out of religion. Which is every Vicar, Priest, Bishop, Arch-Bishop, Pope (or equivalent in other religions). They don't all make millions, but they make their living by spewing out lies to 'sheeple' and the higher up the ladder they climb, the more money they earn.

It's funny that they made a special episode for Ray when he is no better at arguing for christianity than any of the many failed callers in the past.
I know, it's because he's one of the more famous apologists, but it's still kind of funny.
Zentz29 3 weeks ago 2
@Zentz29 A lot of their episodes have repeat points, but various different people and wordings of arguments, and certain victories, and so on, will convince a wider variety of people.

The "random accident" explanation does not exist. Evolutionary theory describes the evolution of new lifeforms in terms of physical, biochemical and biological processes - not random chance.
XGralgrathor 3 weeks ago
Ray Comfort's approach to science and evolution (ie reality) reminds me of the iconic scene in the film Days of Wine and Roses, in the greenhouse. The alcoholic protagonist (Jack Lemon), is sure there is a bottle of whiskey in there and that's all he's interested in. So he begins by pulling up a few plants. No, not there. So he pulls up more, then more. Eventually he has wrecked the entire greenhouse. He didn't give a damn about the greenhouse, it was only the whiskey that mattered to him.
ritchloui 3 weeks ago
Ray Comfort saying he doesn't want to have to accept something on faith? What?
nonzz3ro 3 weeks ago
The whole argument can be stated quite simply. Ray Comfort believes that the most ironclad facts are those that can never be questioned. Atheists believe that all facts should be subject to disproval, or we can't call them facts.
mwilhelmindetroit 3 weeks ago
lol, its like they are talking to a brick wall, they keep comming up with arguments that defeats his arguments, but he just keeps repeating the same things over and over and over... must be incredibly frustrating to talk to people like ray, no matter how many arguments you win, no matter what you say, you still lose in the end due to their pure faith on something based on nothing, ancient brainwashing and mass control. (suffering people = happy, if convinced they will go to heaven when they die)

Ray Comfort's demand for a transitional form looking like the crocoduck is like wanting to see a transition between a baby and an adult which looks like a baby's head on a grown-up body!
I cannot begin to grasp how stupid Ray Comfort's claims are.
