Here's a good tip: Fuck theory, learning notes and scales, and forget everything you ever knew about music. Learn songs. Print out tablature. That's how I learned to play the bass. Pretend you know nothing about that instrument. Even when you start getting really good, stay ignorant to everything music.

@TheresTheSound I picked up guitar about 6 months ago...I looked at nothing but Tabs for 2 months learning and remembering chord formations and fingerings, that's it. After about 2 months of that, when i add the cool stuff and learn technique and theory it all was easy because I knew tons of things to practice on already, it's a very viable tip.
