  • This game has a SHIT load of fighters & bonus items hidden within it. You'll be playing this one for a LOOOONG time.

  • You'd be surprised how little knowing the moves actually helps. I spent ages playing this and knew loads of moves, but was beaten by two people each holding half of the pad while neither of them were looking at the screen XD

  • Namco fighters like this series and Tekken are fantastic. Never underestimate button mashing. My wife kicks my ass at these games by button mashing!!!

  • @neojake999gamer My wife totally slaughters me on Tekken by button mashing :D

  • I am not a masive fan off beat em ups but I am a big Soul Cal fan mainly because you can button bash :0 love it. The one you played on the DC is the best off the lot

  • I use to work with someone who looked like her.........similar hair haha, very funny comments on this one Steve. Can't believe you never played Soul Calibur before, it still look good doesn't it.

  • @kazxena Yeah, it looks very impressive :)

  • Remember picking this up for DC the day it came out, my friend and I where just sat there with our jaw's on the floor lol. The best game in the series, but don't bother with the Xbox Live Arcade version. For some strange reason everything is already unlocked and for me that takes away some of the replay value. Survival mode is still brilliant though.

  • I love this series :). Hit 'im, Hit 'im shouts Steve while pressing block ;) lmao mate!!! The key to this one is learning the best combos, pressing different directions and multiple buttons can pull off some decent moves easily ;).

I was reading the Soul Caliber article in retro Gamer when I noticed this video BTW, strange that :)

  • @ninjabearhug I'm far too lazy to learn control systems.... button mashing FTW... or not... lol!

Thanks again for this Stew... bloody awesome game :D

  • Soul Calibur on DC > Soul Calibur 5

  • Awesome game

  • "I wonder if her arse gets cold?" Heh heh brilliant Steve! :)

  • @senorverde09 I think it and before I know it, I've said it, without even thinking :D

  • This game hasn't changed much graphically in 10 years; look at the fifth installment. Milk, milk, milk.

  • @emuholic That's just how good the graphics are in this game. They really don't need to update it.

  • @TeamRocketReviews Hahaha, to be fair other fighters have superceded this graphically. At one time SC used to be the best looking fighter on any system; at it's launch on the Dreamcast. These days the Soul Calibur games don't look that good. They just blend on in the background amongst the other fighters. That's the problem with having no real update to the visuals. **I just wish they'd innovate or expand it enough to justify the price tag, but they won't**

  • When I saw this vid in my subscription I thought you had made it in relation to the new SCV but now it just seems like a cool coincindence.

  • 9:40 You aren't that far off, Mr. Benway. Namco's Project Soul has been making Taki's boobs bigger each GAME. I believe the developers even made a crack about it in a magazine saying they would keep doing this until fans complained.

  • @ayuloveappears

"... has been making Taki's boobs bigger for each GAME."

Hasn't this been the reality for basically all female video game characters through history?

  • @pstudioDOTtk yes, that's indeed quite true. There needs to be a video game definition for this phenomenon. Maybe "boob boost" or "cleavage creep". I dunno..

  • I just found this game and it's on my newest pickups video on my channel. This is my favorite Soul Caliber game to date. Hey Steve, you're pretty good!

  • I'm hopeless at beat em ups, but it's only because you really have to learn the button combinations for each character and I am too lazy :)

I like the graphics on this one - will definitely have to get a Dreamcast at some stage to complete the Sega console collection.

You got way further than I ever do it these type of games :)

  • @electricadventures The Dreamcast is definitely very worth getting hold of. The only thing that lets it down in my opinion is the controller, which I find a little unintuitive... but it's forgiveable, given all the great games on the system.

I only got anywhere in this game coz I had it set on easy... which even a retarded amoeba could do well on :D

  • @electricadventures I actually like the controller on the Dreamcast - its pretty decent for the time.. The DC is an amazing console though, if you like your arcade games its definetely one to get, certainly it takes where the Saturn was going and runs with it. Get one ASAP, they're nice and cheap ;)

  • 6:30 LOL!

Soul Calibur is easily one of the best games on DC (which is saying something) and it's a release title!

Good thing you got stuck with Taki as she's a great button mashing character; That Narwhal bloke is very slow and plodding, so you would have probably had a hard time with him.

  • @Quimbyrbg Ah, right... I don't get on well with slow plodders. *Sticks with Taki* :D

  • I didn't play any Soul calibur games until about 3 years ago and it is one of my favorite fighting series ever created now! It's actually quite an easy game to play and makes you feel like a god even if you suck balls! =D

  • the soul charging by accident is the reason why i use a arcade stick for this game, another awesome video steve!

  • Love this game, I still play this on my dreamcast, my favourite character is kilik

  • "Button mashing for the win! Oh i lost!" Classic lines Steve!

I own this game for the original Playstation and this version looks even better, either way i loved the first few Soul Calibur/Blade games before Namco became desperate and started adding characters like Link and Darth Vadar to increase sales :)

  • @darrenwalshsock I was rather happy with a few of the "Benwayisms" in the commentary :D

I've been aware of the brand, but never really paid it any attention until now. Star Wars characters do seem somewhat of an out of place addition.

  • @darrenwalshsock Darth Vader is a quality character, proper kick ass!

  • I bought the Dreamcast for Virtual Tennis 2 alone. It was my first console apart from co-owning a Vectrex and an Atari Lynx with my brother. Previously I was a computer gamer at heart. But, was now sick and tired of all the hassle with all the upgrading and patching.

  • best fighting game everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :D

  • I love playing this game, hooked up to my HDTV using a VGA box:) It always makes me grin when I see the "insert coin" message!

  • I still love this game. Nice to see you giving it a shot. I really wish that Bushido Blade would make a comeback.

  • I still think this is the best version of SC - so much to unlock & the single player quest mode is great. A jaw dropper of a game when it came out and it STILL looks good even today.

  • Best Fighting game ever!

  • I will forever remember the battles of "Grand Piano-Mountain-Thing".

  • @ccdm9 I'd like to hear that piano as it falls down the mountain after a rock slide :D

  • This game was epic back in the day! I still play it with my friends from high school!

  • The Saturn and Dreamcast were the Sega consoles that got away from me. Something I always regretted. Never played or owned a Soul Calibur game either but this does look very interesting.

  • if u like this, try soul blade on ps1

  • I've never played a Soul Calibur game before but I have to say: this game looks like immense fun! :D

Your commentary was on fine form in this one. The boobs thing really was quite off-the-wall lol. :P

After a few minutes of you playing and beating the opposition, I did start to wonder whether you'd set the game to Easy. ;)

    Good SWILL! :D

  • @AtsumaKarin Something about fast paced, action packed, and most importantly... *easy* gameplay lends itself perfectly to ridiculous commentary :D

  • I think the boob idea happened with Ivy through the Soul Calibur series.

I think the Benway commentary style would go well into other sports, do well in Rugby. "Come on, punch him in the knackers!"

  • @mroakley1234 I think I'd be sacked within a week :D

  • This will sound like a sacrilege to some people, but I've never played the game either. However I love what I see and it is no wonder that is has such large following. And Steve, you seem to enjoying yourself a lot :) I guess that say a lot about the game

  • I like soulcalibur a lot, its graphics are amazing and the gameplay is just fun, pick up and play!

Beste game on the dreamcast in my opinion.

  • lol at the final comment ;-)

  • Hell yeah! What a game! Nice inability to count during the character selection screen btw ;) I've been playing the prequel to this recently, Soul Blade, on the PS1. Nice series.

  • It's a bit too much male bum for your liking huh? So, how much male bum do you like in a game? :p

  • @sandmanxo Hahaha.... preferably none :P

  • Hi Steve. I rather like the boob idea! Maybe we have the same sick mind...

  • @Theshadowsnose Hehehe... quite possibly :D

  • My bro use to watch WWF. I could only watch it for a few matches then I got bored and did something else. 2 hours an episode was just to much. We never could get tickets for my bro, they were always sold out.

  • Benway getting a perfect? Thats not normal.

  • @wrestletube1 That's what I thought :D

  • Looks like a 2.5D version of classic 2D Barbarian.

  • yeah that was my first ps1 game soul blade

  • Wasn't the first one on the PS as well under the name Soul Blade?

  • So you have played Soul Calibur and Shenmue and most likly Crazy Taxi but have you done Jet Set Radio, if not I'd love to see a video on it. Then you're must plays of the Dreamcast is complete

  • @GamingWithStatoke I haven't played that yet, but it's on my list of must plays :)

  • great video Steve - i love Soul Calibur on the dreamcast it really shows off how great the system really was! get it off easy you big girls blouse lol : P

  • @ukretrogameaddict lol @ "big girls blouse". When it comes to beatemups (and most other games), I really am :D

  • Steve, it's ridiculous that you hadn't played this mind-blowing, killer app before... It's one of the most stunning, fun games of its era... I don't think anyone who first played it back in '99.. wasn't totally gobsmacked by its awesomeness.... I played the Japanese version in summer 99 - then bought the machine and game in winter 99. Namco did some great things with consoles back in 90s.

  • @kingstonlj I've never been big on beatemups, and haven't really delved very deeply into the Dreamcast's catalogue of games... so there's quite a few classics I haven't tried yet.

  • You did rather well, by just button mashing your way around! I got this game too, on the Dreamcast, and it's avaiable on Xbox Live :-D Amazing graphics for the Dreamcast, even for its age!

  • @musicmaniac1965 Yup, it impresses the hell out of me :)

  • Looks great, although I totally suck at these fighting games. I just got my own dreamcast on friday and I've read this is pretty much at the top of the good games list.

  • @Polaventris I've had a Dreamcast for a while (though not back in the day), but haven't found the time to play it as much as I'd like. The only thing I dislike about it is the controllers. I think I'm just spoiled by the utterly logical layout of Playstation controllers.

  • Soul Calibur is amazing , the 5ith instalment is out this friday.
