I'm going to be traveling for the first time to Miami this Sunday, and I was wondering what to expect to see along the way. Thanks to your video, now I know.
I have a couple of questions. How do seating assignments go for the sleeping cars? - And can you lock the door to your bedroom so no one can go in and steal anything?
@pilotofa737 You are assigned a roomette/bedroom upon making reservations for the train. You cannot lock your door from the outside. However, the sleeping cars are usually at one end of the train, and the car attendants do a good job keeping passengers that don't belong in there out.
is that On-track scanner thing a websight? because if it is, it will be simple enough. What type of antenna do you use? is it a long antenna or is it a small one?
@trainguy2020 Yes, it's a website. For some reason Youtube won't let me link to the website in the comments, Google On-Track Online and you'll find it. It's a longer antenna cut for VHF radio.
Do they provide internet or did you have a special internet connection? because I'll be taking 97 from Charleston SC to Winter Park and I was just curious if they do or not. love the k5LA action too. sounds like engine 135's k5LA horn that I heard throughout the video.
@trainguy2020 I had to provide my own internet. I tethered to my verizon cell phone for internet access. As long as I had a cell signal, i had internet access.
For me, Florida is the most boring state to travel through. When most people think of Florida, they think of beaches and Disney and old people. Don't get me wrong, all of that is true, but most of Florida is just trees and swamps. I have lived in south Florida for 13 years and when ever my family takes Amtrak or our car, it is so boring because of how long Florida is from top to bottom. I love Amtrak traveling though and your videos.
How long do the trains stop st the certain locations? long enough to do some sight seeing? or is it like a stop just to stretch your legs and get back to truckin'
@macdaddymomma The east coast trains can stop anywhere from a minute to a little over an hour at a station stop. It depends on where they are in the schedule.
that's cool that you went through Palatka. question: did they provide a scanner for the radio chatter? or did you bring your own? and what scanner frequency were you using?
@trainguy2020 I brought my own scanner with me. A great resource for frequencies of roads that Amtrak operates on is On-Track-On-Line, and go to 'Scanners' and then 'Amtrak Frequencies'
Love the video. I grew up riding Amtrak between Ga and NJ. Recently took a trip down to Ft. Lauderdale. Don't know if you know this, but in Folkston, GA. on one side of the rail there is a railfanning area where the local Rail Fans will gather to greet the Silver Meteor and/or Amtrak's Silver Star service.

thanks alot man. it really helps. I bet when you guys slept in that room it rocked you to sleep instantly. What do you mean by "vhf radio?"
trainguy2020 9 months ago
@trainguy2020 Oh yeah, it definitely rocked you to sleep instantly. VHF is the band that the train radios operate on.

1970listowel 10 months ago

@1970listowel thats why i love the fact my dad works for amtrak, i can ride free with my pass, and get the sleeper. We dont have "roomettes" here.

Great video! Liked the ride footage. That EC1 towards the end of the video is a pretty common one.
