  • why aren't you making a new video?

  • Thanks for the video! I just got a 6 week old German shepherd mix and I've been focusing more on negative reinforcement when I should be on positive! He is only six weeks and needs time to learn, but your videos have definitely helped!

  • I just bought a 8 week old shepherd yesterday, ive been up most of the night. It'll sleep for 2 hours then wake up crying and wont stop till i let him out of the cage, And when i do let him out to go pee he'll pee on the floor before i can even get him outside. What do i do?=/

  • What do you think of Zak George and his training philosophy as well as technique?

he has a bunch of video's on youtube

  • First off, let me say I love these very informative videos. I'm getting my new GSD pup in a few hours. How much time should be devoted to getting the dog used to its new surroundings before beginning training?

  • He's only 3 months old, my 3 month old black lab peed about every 45min-1 hour the first couple weeks when not in a crate. Just pay attention to the signs and your puppy will be peeing outside in no time.

I do believe tab has a video on house breaking too :-)

  • also. when catched in the act when i correct him, he will automatically run to the backyard and finish which confuses me even more cause it shows that he knows what he has done and where he should do it! its routine every day so idk what must be done for him to understand that if the door is closed he has to hold it in for a bit!

  • @tab289 hey man i love your vids, im thinking to get a German Shep do u think i should get male or female

  • Got a new GSD pup got a video on my channel of her =P

  • I'm getting a German Shepherd puppy this summer! I am SO excited!

  • I got my border aussie 4 days ago, he just turned 8 weeks today and I found your videos about 2 days ago. I have watched nearly every single one that is relevant to a new dog/puppy owner and have had amazing success following your techniques. My pup can loose leash walk, come about 70% of the time and knows his name and it is because of your videos. I found a local dog school that only uses positive reinforcement techniques and we start "puppy prep" this Sat. Thank you so much!!!

  • Thanks for this video.

I am going to pick up a Jack-a-ranian tomorrow and was looking for these type of videos.

Any major tips you would suggest going over with a puppy? Should I give her a few days to get used to the new place before I start doing any training or bonding?

  • Either I'm the worst dog trainer, or he makes it seem way too ridiculously easy...

  • Hi Tab.

I have an older dog for about 7 years. She is now 10. I adopted her when she was about 3. We suspect that she was abused before she was found on the streets. Now, she is the best dog. Quiet, loves visitors and attention, and is very lovable. However has always been aggressive towards other dogs (except 1, which she acts like any normal dog around). Whats the best way to teach a dog how to be calm/friendly around other dogs? I've tried many methods but not many have worked. Help!!

  • @SkullBelt She's very obedient when there are no other dogs, but when she sees another dog, she just loses it! Very rarely I can calm her down by continuing to walk and saying leavee itt...leave it... then I praise her if she does not act out. How can I train her without putting other dogs in danger?

  • Hi tab

Would you mind if you made a video on how to train a dog to go toilet outside of the house, and is Solea potty trained. THNX.

P.S you have a great dog and you are a great trainer too!!

  • Can you please do a video of training a dog to "speak".

  • My second question: how long (on average) does it take with practicing every day to get a near perfect recall? I’m thinking I might be a bit impatience. We have a 12 week old ridgeback as well as 3 other dogs who aren’t really trained and makes it a bit more difficult to keep the pups attention whilst training, I do separate him from the other 3 before I attempt serious stuff. Thanks 4 all the tips and videos

  • Hi, having a new puppy in the house I’ve been watching and trying a couple of your videos. One or two questions however. Can I train various behaviours or just perfect one at a time? i.e one day sit, the other day down, the other day the recall or sort out one at a time?

  • @tab289 Hey tab can you also post up a puppy eating plan and when it goes adult? Thanks

  • "Published on Jan 10, 2012" It's too late, Tab. Too late. You broke my heart. ;(

  • Hey tab289, i just bought a 6 week old German Shepherd. Is this a good age to be taught at or should I wait till hes older?

  • Hey, Tab! Could you please make videos about "Speak" and "Play dead" tricks? Thank you!

  • I usually walk out of the room and ignore her when she is being like this, but she howls blue murder and my partner takes over by going in and telling her to be quiet and lay on her bed. She is usually quiet after this. But as soon as I go back she starts again. Is there any way I can get her to be quiet for me without having a clicker atm. Sorry if I sound stupid, but it is my first puppy and I want to train her with positive reinforcement, but don't know where to start!

  • My partner and I recently bought a collie/husky cross puppy. She is 8 weeks old and we have had her 2 weeks. She has the attention span of a goldfish so it makes training her hard. I am waiting on a clicker to be delivered, but what sort of treats should I use to train with as the ones I am currently using are upsetting her stomach. Also she gets over excited when trying to train her and ends up being a little monster ( usually running round and jumping on furniture trying to bite me!).

  • How to make your dog hug/kiss

  • can you please please please do a video on how to potty train your puppy! I am hopefully adopting a german shepard puppy in the next few weeks and I know if he is not taught at an early age it will be difficult to teach, thanks.

  • Great Tab, your videos are helping make change in the training world. I was at Patricia McConnell and Kathy Sdao seminar a couple of weekends ago, full of pro trainers. I mentioned I carry a card with several youtube trainer links on it for handing to people I run into. I had several ask for my list because it was a great idea. Anyone out there wanting to help educate others on positive training might want to do the same. tab289,kikopup,pamelamarxsen, youtube.com/watch?v=ipT5k1gaXhc

  • Well I would say the first most important tool is, as you said, the love and relationship. I think the second is patience, however, a nessecary skill when training dogs and puppies. I think the leash, crate, and clicker are probably tied for 3rd most important.

  • May I ask when (if you did) you had your dog neutered? Do you think that it makes a large difference in their attention span/behavior as far as training goes?

  • You are by far so much better than those big tv trainers.

  • @OurPetsAreFamily - you mean cesar millan?

  • @OurPetsAreFamily

I do prefer Tab and Victoria Stillwell (It's Me or the Dog) for using nearly the same training methods. Positive training has really helped my once abused dachshund in learning proper dog behavior and created a bond for us. :) I give trainers respect for people don't always realize they are the cause of the dog's bad behavior and never like to be blamed. It takes guts to stand up to that. But from what I've seen most trainers don't really know what they're doing. Tab does.

  • Tab is honestly my favorite dog trainer. I wish you would make a tv show!!!

  • Great video tab. I do have a question: what if you accidently hurt your dog (for example step on the dogs paw) Do you ignore the dog or do you pet the dog to make him feel better? Thanks

  • @238lamain ignore is best... i have elevator and my dog hade the door on her tail... but if i had to feel sorry for here she wouldnt be able to step in the elevator again, she would be afraid of it...i just tooked a look so anything had broken...sorry my English ..

  • I have a terrible schedual its never predictable so I might be away for about 8 hours but my mom would still be there but my mom does erins after she picks me up from school and I have a puppie thats about 8 weks old I wake up before school to walk her but I dont think its enought

  • My dog is just over 1 now and still barks at people, birds and other animals, but he mainly barks at black people when they walk past my house. I really need to get him to stop barking at everything, have you got any tips? Thanks :)

  • Thx for posting Tab! I'll post up some videos once I start getting some results myself. Thx!

  • Tab I need help my German sheperd is 6 months old and is out of control he barks at passing people and other dogs and always jumps on people. He digs excessively and likes nibbling things. Please help me!

  • This video couldn't have come at a better time. We recently got ourselves a Boxer. She's a darling, but tends to be VERY stubborn. Lol!

  • Yay a new video! :P

  • 01:09 - "Puppies make mistakes, and they should make mistakes because, unfortunately, they are not born knowing how to behave in a human household"

Neither are HUMAN babies for that matter . . .

  • @tab289 my family just got a puppy, and he's nine weeks. But, the real problem is that during the day no one is home for about 7 hours, there is no way anyone of us can get home to let him out in the middle of the day, so we leave him in his crate for those 7 hours. Do you have any suggestion on how to make this process a little bit easier? Should i leave so toys in there, maybe an old shirt, or like a bone? Will he stop having so many accidents once he gets older?

  • @musicrunsdeep oh dear,7 hours is WAY too long to be leaving a 9 week old puppy. you need to find a sitter, a walker, take time off work even. You wouldn't leave an infant home for 7 hours and look for ways to make the process "better". they are not suppose to be left alone that lone and neither should puppies. Also, 9 week is a critical developmental period and if not properly take care of, there will be bigger problems than accients in the crate.

  • finally tab!

  • @charicebiggestfan Try ignoring him when he bites you. Remember that he is a puppy, meaning that he is going to be teething. Buy a few chew toys like kong or rubber chicken maybe a ball/tennis ball?

  • Oh videocopilot, where are you not?

  • hey tab289 i really need ur help we just bought a 2 month old german shepherd and he wont stop biting me and bitting the leash if i wanna walk him i tryed realy every thing i tryed toys screaming no hiting his not hard on his nose and it wont work i tryed really every thing he bites and bites and wont stop i can see he is only playing but some times it hurts i realy need help wat to do i realy want him to stop biting

  • @charicebiggestfan You have to get a handle on it before he gets any bigger, and dangerous. You have to be consistent and firmly say NO or NO BITING or NIEN or whatever word you want to use. I use NO BITING because I use NO for other things and I want him to distinguish the difference. Right after you verbally tell him that he effed up, you have to STOP playing with him, make him associate this bad behavior with NOT getting what he wants, which is attention. Do NOT allow him to keep doing this.

  • @charicebiggestfan I have a video all about this topic, linked at the end of this video - it should take you right to it.

  • @tab289 oki thanks

  • @tab289 What about the other part - my puppy bites her leash and turns around and pulls on it with her teeth. If I leave her with leash on and let her do whatever she wants, she always comes back to leash biting/chewing. Walking with her that way is no fun at all...

  • @tab289 Hey Tab289...I was wondering what kind of treats do you give your dog or do you just give her pieces of her dog food?:)

  • @charicebiggestfan Another thing is to make sure he isn't just feeding off of your energy - if you're voice gets higher (frustration, anger, fear, etc) and if you move a lot (flail your arms to avoid his blows) then he will take that as an invitation to play even more aggressively! At this stage he is really just playing - it is our job to teach them HOW to play - politely :)

  • @charicebiggestfan I really feel for you, having just gone throught he same thing, my puppy is now a year old, and although not totally mouth on free she is much much better. You have to be very very patient and very very consistent. But know that this will probably not go away in a few days, few weeks, or months. Even with you doing all the right things. Be consistent and firm. Do not get mad. Do not hit, but ostracize your puppy for this. tell her no and walk away,

  • this video is really going to help me with my new pup!

  • Can you do a video teaching a dog to "speak".

  • @MrMuthaUcker

thumbs up for mr muthafucker :D i want to know how too!

  • Hey! Your videos are fantastic. I just got a german shepherd mix puppy for Christmas. She's great! Everything is great..except her biting and nipping. What are some good techniques for this? Thanks!

  • @sandpin06

He has a video on his channel about puppy biting.

  • Thank you Tab, Raising my German shepherd is quite a challenge, but you're helping me a lot with these videos.

P.S. She learned the close door trick in 4 days and she's only 4 months old!

  • Great video TAB! Sharing!

  • great video, but it is illegal to have dogs in a leash inside in Sweden, and i think its a good law. its not nice to have them on leash inside.

  • @petrarar i get where the idea comes from, but i agree with tab that the leash can be learned used to teach a dog the right behavior, as long as you stop used the leash inside once the dog learned it

  • Tab please do a video on schutzhund...how and where to train for it and other things about it... Thanks..

  • Nice to see you making videos again tab!

  • Nice video.. but still cant get nothing outta my puppy :(

  • What to do if my puppy keeps biting the leash. I also have problem putting on collar on my puppy. He struggles and bits it too. Any advice?

  • @maple158 Associate the collar with something pleasant: Tab has a nice video on how to get your dog used to getting their nails trimmed that would work very well with a collar as well. Make it non-threatening to them, praise and reward for letting you put the collar on. Pups have a great food drive, so treats work very well for rewarding proper behavior and reinforcing it.

  • @maple158 the dog has to put his head through the collar himself, bribe him with food he really likes by holding the collar in front of him and holding the food on the other side of the collar, do that a couple of times and should become a piece of cake;)

  • Hey tab! My dog is 10-11 months old, and he is starting to be slightly aggressive like he nibbles on peoples feet and hands. How can I show him he's doing something I don't want him to do?

  • @MaxMaltie Depending on the breed, he could be doing so because his teeth are coming out and he needs to chew on something, my dog did that but he stopped when he was around 7 months. what's your dog's breed?

  • @Dodimoodi He's a Maltese :D He's champion bloodlines... would that have something to do with it? He has 2 rope toys but he never has any interest in them at all.....

  • great video!! would like to see a puppy training clip tho

  • thanks to you, i got a well behaved nice German shepherd at 6 months age. thanks for all, you have provided great vidios, and im sure you have helped out many =)
