  • Chip Spankow is a total tool, and Emotive ruined Jim Russel Racing. Stupid motor for this open wheeler, turbo sucks on formula cars, thats why no one runs em.

  • Hey just so you guys know and there isn't any confusion. The FJR 50 weights about 1235 pounds without a driver and about five gallons of fuel on the scales. We also use air restrictors on the turbo inlet to ensure equal power throughout the fleet of formula cars. During most school events the cars run around 250hp. Race trim is 300hp. These cars are faster around our track than any stock car or Indy Lights car. If we choose to use a softer compound tire we could be substantially faster.

  • What was up with the red GTO/3000GT at :41, electric hard top convertible? I've never seen one quite like that before. The top looks kinda simmular to the 300x 2+2 convertible concept/thingy.

  • are you guys aware that f1 cars make about 200lb's of toque. I'm pretty sure that engine is making more than that so put that into context. that car is making more torque than your typical f1 car. Horsepower is just torque*rpm's/5252, so like i said you guys complaining about power are ridiculous.

  • @monono954 this is true, but f1 engines peak at around 20,000rpm. making torque at high rpm is more useful torque because you can use gearing.

    200lbs of torque but a lot higher horsepower

    a properly built stock long block 4g63 can make a Reliable 400whp without thinking twice.

    and there is a lot of proof that says they can reliably make much more.

    205whp and 305whp on the race map?.... i understand its light, but come on.

    can you imagine what would happen if they had an AMS build long block running a TAME! FPred on 20psi?!

  • There's alot more to it than pure horsepower when it comes to driver training formula cars. The FJR-50 car weighs 1023 lbs, with 300 hp giving a power to weight ratio of 3.41 lbs/hp.

    The Evo 8 weighs 3200 lbs and even with 500 hp, it has a power to weight ratio of 6.4 lbs/hp.

    (The Formula car is almost twice as fast while having 200 hp less.)

    On the VT Formula SAE racecar that I'm working on, even 100 hp will prove to be more than sufficient due to the 450lbs weight.

    IF you would have read a little more carefully, you would have noticed I made ZERO reference to what chassis the engine was in (purposely).....

    ....I was strictly referring to the 4G63t engine and what IT is capable of, no matter what car it is in.

    4g owns.....

  • @wowofallthepeople -I think in higher HP applications, the Flat4 poops-out in regards to flowing in and out of the head. Heads just can't hang. Even EJ/Subi Gods talk about the 'dog leg' limiting flow, and its not curable.

    -At crazy levels, I don't think F4's have piston rings that are able to seal like they can on an Inline engine.

    -There are many pros to using Flat4 engines; but in regards to making a lot of AWHP, the EJ can't hang with the 4g63.

  • @eeeen321 If some company would RWD convert an Evo, with a tube-chassis, and tubbed the rear with MASSIVE rear slicks and a Ford 9" rear end, Than we would see Evos' hitting mid-low 7's, using less power than the low 8 sec awd Evos' run now.

    But as it is, the top Evo drag racers in the world use oem unibodies matched to modified versions of the factory awd systems, and only in a couple cases do teams run huge rear diffs (APC, not STM)... but never tubbed RWD tube-chassis..

  • @eeeen321 The RWD Outlaw 4g63 that Brent Rau drives makes 1400hp on Alky and runs6's. 4g63 was the best 4 cylinder engine for the better part of 15 years!

  • @wowofallthepeople A friend of mine just bought a 2011 wrx, and I had a friend w/ a 360awhp (mustang dyno) 04' wrx wagon, ON THE STOCK 2.0L; they are awesome cars.

    But when compared at crazy lvls of power, the 4g has proven time and time again, its the boss man.

    And No, I don't like the "boxer sound"; which is little more than exhaust gas flowing through an UNequal length header. Every heard a flat 4 w/ Equal-length headers, the STI spec C has oem. Does away w/ 95% of the "Boxer" sound.

  • Ahh, a Lancia Delta S4 would beat that off the start line. Probably not on a Formula track, but without the slicks or aero aids, the S4 would destroy. Not that I wouldn't love to own the Mitsu.:)

  • I love Nissan engines but this is much more compact and light one thing Nissan i4s aren't

    niether are hondas mitsubishi blocks are light and compact which is part of the reason why they are so crappy but its perfect for this application.

  • The ej wouldn't fit within the body constraints and the same with the vq35. When they build a formula car the engine is essentially part of the chassis as you saw in the video. So a flat four wouldn't provide the structural integrity and the v6 would be too big and heavy.
