im curiouse, do people ever take the jizo statues, i imagine natives wouldnt because they are aware of the cultural signifigence , but i wager that it is a problem with tourists
Hello Inuyashabuddha, As an antique dealer I do sometimes find old Jizo statues like those shown in this video coming on the auction block. However, I can't imagine any Japanese person stealing these though they certainly do have value (very significant value in many cases). Tourists might be disinclined to steal these due to the awkward size and heavy nature. Also, the statues tend to crumble to bits when handled (I once watched such a statue fall to pieces when picked up). -Kurt :-)
Hello Kat, While I was filming the Jizo statues Yumiko had jumped behind Emily and had placed her hands on either side of Emily's eyes. Yumiko then gently pulled on the skin to cause Emily's eyes to become narrow slits similar to the eyes on the statues. Yumiko changed her mind at the last second and Emily's comments were her asking mommy what she had been doing. It was pretty funny. -Kurt :-)
Hello Th33k, The offering you saw consisted of a very small ceramic Jizo statue along with a stalk of the wild grass which grows along the flank of this volcano. Thanks for noticing this interesting detail and for asking. -Kurt :-)
Lovely as always, brother.
As much as the videos about the wildness of Tokyo are entertaining.. I think your's capture the spirit of Japan in a quieter and more real way.
Keep them coming, man!
