Ah! the the musical equivalent of a charming, gentle little skirmish in the Class War. Even the most militant leftist would fail to find it offensive...It is the innocuous subtelty, and upon hearing it daily, wherein its powerful political strength lies -worming its message into our brains and all the while tittering!
@rawdonwaller its compound time - 12/8 - which is similar to 4/4 but the there are 3 quavers per beat instead of 2. in 12/8 one beat = 3 quavers = a dotted crotchet. In 4/4 one beat = 2 quavers = a crotchet. Its used to display a different 'feel', more swinglike.. i suppose.
@rawdonwaller Music is very similar to the NE Folk song the Blaydon Races written in 1862. Likewise has humour in it. and given what lucrezia100 said, I should say is very definitely a celebration of working class day-trips!
This is brilliant. Takes me back to listening to my Dads old records. This song could be just a relevant today with some of the workmen we get these days!!
I love this song, particularly when Bryn Terfel does it as an encore and invite the audience to sing along!!

I grew up on this as well. My brother-in-law sat down and listened to the two albums we owned, so he could understand half our conversations.
