Thats why brazil win the world cup in football, not because they are working class........its because they are less than working class and have to prove themselves better!!
I heard that some of the brazilians in the early seventies had to be introduced to football boots!!...until then it was common practise to play barefoot.
@jakeytitch96 It's also because they have a population of 200 million, far more than any other major football country. They are far from being the best football nation on a per capita basis. Argentina, Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands are better per capita for a start, and many German and Dutch players are middle class.
@johnkaponi Just like Roger Federer (pharmaceutical executive's son), Rafa Nadal (hotelier's son), Andy Roddick (big shot executive's son) etc. eh? Even Andy Murray is thoroughly middle class, though he doesn't get abused for it the way he would if he was English, due to his Scottish accent. What we need is a society, and a sporting culture, that is focused on excellence, rather than consumed with class hatred.
@ledzeplad It's the same in all countries because it is an inherently expensive sport. Most top players are middle class, including Federer and Nadal. We don't have top players because tennis is a minor sport here, and the club culture, such as it is, is focused on recreational tennis.
@Bhoeble No,no, i think you mis-understand what im saying here. There is a difference between wealth and class, Nadal and federer may be from wealthy backgrounds but the English upper class system would rather see failure than see a working class kid do well. Look how well we are doing in Rugby and cricket these days and study the backgrounds of the players.
I think Tim is absoloutely right some of the poorest countries in the world produce the best tennis players. If individuals want it enough they need to work for it.
@shaz1602 No they don't. The poorest countries in the world are all in Africa. The players you are referring to are from middle income countries, and many of them are middle class, e.g. Ivanovic is the daughter of a top lawyer and a diplomat.
Tennis is for the middle classes and above thats why we cannot produce a champion............simple as that.

Yes and Yes again totally agree! We need the inner cities and the kids that need to win to play!
