yes they are. hard to believe this was from 2008 and the U.S. even. That radar they are using is an absolute joke and they should be ashamed of it. Using rounded radar images from AccuWeather or something the average person would use on their own. They don't even show wind velocities or HD radar or anything. A life threatening situation and they sound befuddled and as if they didn't go to school for it. Sad.
I Don't think the meterolgist in this video knew the immenstiy of the tornado that would hit Parkersburg. I wonder what they though when they saw the damage. This storm was a very impressive supercell. It had incredible high and inflow. Amazing.
@bigleague5 you'd think...but they were right except it wasnt really in that circle it went right along the highway that on here goes thru Parkersburg onto New Hartford and then north of Cedar Falls
It's been two years now since the Parkersburg Tornado, on this exact day...I still remember that day, too. Even though we didn't get extremely terrible weather where I lived in Marion, it still rained during the day and you just could feel that something was going to happen. Hopefully we will never have another tornado like that one, but with storm season here right now, it's only a matter of time, and the temperature this year is hotter than normal...
I was in Monona when all this broke loose, spotted a funnel cloud down towards Elkader/St. Olaf around 5PM. Later tried heading back to Muscatine that night and ended up getting a hotel room in Dubuque.
I live in Independence IA... I was at home when this storm hit and that whole thing was right in my back yard... All the tornados were a little more north that I was but still it was scary!
I live in Dunkerton and i remember that day. My cousin was having a graduation party and it was way warm and them all of the sudden it got way cool so we went inside and turned to KCRG and they were showing the tornado heading for Dunkerton. Luckily it missed us but sad to say it hit Parkersburg dead on. I knew something was going to happen in dunkerton when i felt the sudden change in temp. I stood outside and heard it go by and it did sound like a train and all u could see was pitch black sky.
I was in Hazel Green Wis At a party about 1/2 mile out of town when I saw Strange clouds in the sky. I when't in my friends house and watch the weather channel and then they said that a tornado was coming our way. But it changed we had hail and south of Hazel Green A funnel Cloud was spotted near Galena. So I was Fine On May 25 2008.
I miss living in Iowa City and watching KCRG during severe weather. They always do fantastic coverage. So yea, umm... let's move all you guys down to Pensacola, OK? LOL
@frappudew KAKE in Wichita covers the entire state off Kansas and their detailed coverage and usage of radar tools puts this to shame. I don't know why they never loop it, show the actual reflectivity, or most importantly show velocity returns.
I had just gotten up from a nap and they said it was north of Ceday Falls. I decided to chase it not knowing what it was. I live in Waterloo, and luckily could only get to Airline Highway where all roads were blocked by sherrifs. By the time I got to the intersection of Airline and Hwy 63, it was the darkest black looking toward Denver that I had ever seen. I have been through two hurricanes while in the service, but this day I was more scared than either of those.
The storm hit Galena,IL about 2-3 hours later and the sirens went off in town. KCRG kept me informed throughout the storm. There was a funnel cloud that didn't drop one block away, luckily no tornado touched in Galena. Great job KCRG.
I was in Platteville, Wisconsin when that happened. Even though its in different state, KCRG still includes Platteville in the their weather viewing area. I was watching this for hours and hours of storm coverage.
holy shit i was chasing this tornado and it was a wedge and it was like 5 miles wide we were taking highway d17 and chasing this what he said was right it was moving straight east
I saw this coverage on TV when I was at my mom's house in Waterloo. It was scary and cool at the same time. The sirens were going off for about 10 minutes. My condolences to the impacted families in Parkersburg. I'm not surprised this storm had a hook echo in it too.
kcrg needs to show more of the SRV (storm relative velocity) images. Because looking at the base images doesn't show most of the rotation. You can see it but most people don't know what to look at. I'm going to send them an email and hope the can show the SRV
Ahh, I remember when I was watching this in Decorah. Thank god I was out of the way of this monster tornado. I live in CR but still, I was very scared when watching this. My prayers go out to all of the families affected by this.
Okay, so it's basically 1/3 of the state. The eastern half is extremely flooded. Downtown Cedar Rapids is underwater, also many communities north of Cedar Rapids, and even Iowa City are flooded. One of the worst floods in the history of the earth.
If you don't mind me asking, what do you guys do when you find out a tornado is coming? Do most of the properties out there have basements? My prayers go out to the people in Iowa.
Well usually, if the situation is not life-threatening or anything, some Iowans go out on their porch to watch it rain and stuff. At least, that's what my family does. If it is indeed a life-threatening situation, when a tornado is headed for you, we usually go to the basement. I assume most people have basements, but if they don't, they go to an interior room on the lowest level of their house for maximum protection. Hope this helped :-).
I was at my friends house because Iowa wasn't the only state under a tornado watch

I remember those reports, and the days after. I live in Cedar Rapids and the only thing I wanted to do after that was go up there and help.

@TheMightykaz Why? Just because they don't have a helicopter? Just because they don't have their own chasers?

@benjaminfan56 There's some video somewhere on YouTube of a large tornado spawned by this same storm near Dunkerton that day.

These weathermen need to play with their mapping equipment just a little bit more, and not learn how to use it in real time live on the air.

I don't believe they have major flooding, but some of the rivers around there could be above flood stage. Nothing that I've heard though :|.
