@armchairexpertnow the Dash 8-400 does not have auto throttle so the autopilot will do whatever it needs to maintain a set altitude that is programmed in regardless of airspeed.
so does the stick shaker activate when they are flying too slow for the conditions? Then all the pilot needs to do is push the control forward and nose down???
@gf4life ...exactly ..the stick shaker will activate if that happens or if an aircraft angle of attack is to steep and it will stall the engines. When you move the yoke forward you let the engines take in more air increasing speed and exiting that 'stall speed' noted in the video (the red lines creeping up on his display screen). He basically did the exact opposite and forced the engine stall to occur.
@bpeaceful87 ...an aerodynamic stall has nothing to do with speed or engines (you mean compressor stall) - an aerodynamic stall is when the wings exceed the critical angle of attack (typically 16-20 degrees) and the airflow separates from the wing, becomes turbulent and hits the elavator - felt as buffet on the stick. lowering the nose to break the stall reduces the A of A and allows airflow over the wings/stabilser which creates the lift that is rather helpful to flight!
This is the second recent episode where pilots have ignored their air speed indicator and been surprised by the stick shaker. In the other episode there were 3 crew in the cockpit yet nobody noticed the loss of speed until it was too late. There should be a mandatory AUDIBLE warning of critically low airspeed, getting louder approaching stall, well before the stick shaker cuts in. No matter how tired they were however, it''s still shocking that the crew could make such a basic piloting error.
Ok, at the guy that said "the emotions of that woman pilot took over her training and logic" , thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You have to be from a middle eastern country or something. So dumb. Retarted. Do you have your ATP yet? Didn't think so. But as a 12,000 hour pilot, I know there is not one airline pilot in the world who would push a shaker. None. And tired? You guys need to fly a few thousand hours before you should be able to post anything. This isn't FS or something.
No it was me running out of room to berate you. I have almost exclusively married in the aviation field. And just thinking about what you said, makes me think your brown and short. And you think women aren't as good at some things because your allegedly a guy. You have no girlfriend, or wife, and sit with guys a lot talking about what you coulda/woulda/shoulda done. Your life sucks , and you sound not too smart, and judging by your videos , don't have a fun life.
@mrpolaroid123 she waz the co-pilot not the pilot, the pilots head of command mainly trained to do everything right during an emergency like this, while the co-pilot usually handles mostly radio contacts and still usually learning but still they shuld of been trained avoid this common stuff like this. Also not all woman FLYERS are bad.
@shaun91255 I hate to say it god bless the flight crew and all souls aboard the plane and on the ground but you are absolutely right... im a student pilot now I was taught this in like lesson 3 or 4 how to recover from a stall.... very fundamental basis of flying what a shame :/
i know they teach you how to recover from a stall, but at night, with tired pilots, and not a lot of altitude, they probably forget all their basic training and i really, don't think they were expecting anything to go wrong.
@aabbii93here You've got to expect things are going to go wrong. And always need to prepare ourselves for handling the unexpected, thats what we r trained to do.
Autopilot programming failure
The Autopilot was operating the plane when it allowed airspeed to decline from 180 knots to 131 knots and the premature stick shaker warning.
Why wasn't the Autopilot programmed to maintain a safe airspeed by increasing engine power and to adjust the attitude to the best pitch?
Inadequate design of the de-icing function
Even with the de-icing function turned on, ice accumulated on the wings so much that it caught the attention of both pilots.

Fatigue - the killer ! Logic and alertness take a backseat if fatigue takes over .

@dsplabucsd : The dumbest thing i have ever heard. My ex-wife is a airline pilot, as many many of my first officers have been.

@shaun91255
oh yeah for sure, its an ABSOLUTE necessity and also simply being aware you are going into the stall in the first place
i guess it gets tricky when it happens happens all of a sudden to tired pilots

@aabbii93here Dont be sorry : P I bet there are tons of pilots out there could made the same mistake in the same situation.
in this case, the airline company culture should be blame, not the two pilots
