@MeMeQueens You idiot, these movies use decadence and sexuality to attract audiences. While you only see violence and such in current movies, others before you would have seen other elements that they find offensive in these movies. That you fail to understand this basic observation, shows how useless you are as a person, and how your opinion is that of a retard.

She came from a family of Spanish Flamenco dancers, and was trained as a Flamenco dancer from very early childhood. Her technique as a dancer ia actually better than Fred Astaire.
Check out her upper body and arm movement. Notice how she moves her shoulders and arms and he does not.

@ShapurKing You said it right! all manufactored fast and spit right into the market place, the film industry. There is no raw talent anymore in the stars today, maybe a few, but that's it. Everything about Hollywood and its Stars are complete garbage. It is truly sad.
Rita Casino was of Spanish rather than Latin American orgin. She was trained in Flamenco dance from the age of 3 by one of Spains leading teachers, and actually has stronger credentials as a professional dancer than Fred Astaire.
Always adored this jazzy little number--they are in perfect synch together. Does anyone know what this dance was called? I want to say the Shorty George (love that name) but I could be thinking of a different number.
@TheCatgirl6 "The Boogie Barcarolle" is the name of the big production number that follows it, and these steps are supposedly part of that routine, but you don't actually see them again in it. Interestingly, Astaire does this same sequence within the "Heat Wave" number in BLUE SKIES--one of the very few times he repeated himself in any way.
@ziggyfollies Ah--thank you! You're right--I knew they'd performed "The Shorty George" somewhere, but I couldn't place exactly in which movie where. Maybe I wnated to think it it was this tap routine because of the relative brevity of the dance? Anyway, thanks for the feedback. :-)
i was surprised at how good Rita's tapping was. I think Rita and Fred match a lot better that Fred and Eleanor Powell ( even though I think Eleanor's a better tap dancer). This s a great dance!
I didnt realize that Rita Hayworth could tap so well. Tap at this level is very difficult. I love her and Fred together, they have chemistry together and are physically well matched.
I just watched this 5 times in a row, each time watching a different part of the dance- Rita's face, footwork, over all movement of the two, ect. The hardest part was trying to watch Fred! I'm a heterosexual female, but it's so hard to NOT watch Rita! Every time I tried to watch just fred's dancing my eyes kept drifting back to Rita.
Hayworth was on stage by the age of six as a member of The Dancing Cansinos, a famous family of Andalusian flamenco dancers working in vaudeville. In fact, Hayworth's uncle taught Gene Kelly the pasa doble in the early 1930's. In addition to partnered dance with Rita in Cover Girl, Kelly later employed solo pasa doble and flamenco to woo Kathryn Grayson to stunning effect in Anchors Aweigh.
I was fortunate to take ballet lessons from Rita Hayworth's uncle's wife who was a lovely dancer and teacher when he had a studio in Miami FL. Later she became ill it took up the dance lessons and taught us Flamingo dancing. He was a charming as I am sure the rest of the family. Lucky me!!
I don't know if that is true or not. I did read something about it somewhere. However, I believe I might have read it in the biography of Ginger Rogers or Rita Hayworth. I would check it out.
This is actually one of the few films I do have on DVD, but I love watching these scenes from time to time when I haven't the time to watch the whole film, thank you for uploading this!
You know what would be awesome to see here on Youtube, anyone? The incredible number of Fred dancing in the "army jail" (for lack of a better word). I think it might be one of his best performances ever!
I believe that was one of his best performances too. I couldn't get over how wonderful the number was and wished I had the DVD. I saw it on VHS before. However, Fred Astaire made the number so exciting and for the first time I actually believe he looked sexy in that uniform. The whole movie was hysterical including the miscommunication of the double talking was clever at best! love it!!!
A few years ago.Parents were out for dinner. When the babysitter noticed a shadow. She called the parents but halfway through the message all the parents heard was a scream. When they rushed home all they saw was the babysitters?Body on the floor. If you dont put this on 10 other videos he will appear at 3o'clock tonight in your bed

I'm amazed. The second time I watched it i just stared at their feet waiting to point out a tiny split second being off but they are completely in sync the whole time! :) WOW.
Bit of trivia: Did you know that Rita and Fred died only 5 weeks apart? She died May 14, 1987 and Fred died on June 22, 1987. She was 68 and he was 88.
Actually, very silly plot aside, there are some terrific solos by Fred, and a beautiful duet between him and Rita that you can see here on YouTube. It's danced to the song "So Near and Yet So Far."
I did't know that Rita was a dancer, too...I thought she was only an actress, so when I saw this movie I was really good-surprised! She's great, and together they are fabulous! I think I like Fred-Rita more than Fred-Ginger....don't say I'm an heretic
Yeah...Ginger was very good too, I'm not saying anything different, but the thing I less like in her dancing was shoulders...they were not well opened, and it's a thing that always hurts me in a dancer, expecially a girl...
Rita was a dancer before anything else! She was professional dancer before an actress. Fred said she was the best he partnered with onscreen so that ought to tell you something.
I think fred liked most of the dancers he worked with though the ones who were profesional dancers such as rita (who many think was his favourite since her style and profesionalism was on par with astaires) and eleanor powell were the ones that obviously stood out for him. Fred and ginger also greatly enjoyed working with each other despite both wanting to do other things and not be known as a team.
I have a magazine with her on the cover, from 1941 (the year this movie was released), and she's in a swimsuit so you can see her legs really well. She definitely has dancer's legs--so much muscle from dancing all those years! She is an amazingly beautiful woman and an astounding dancer.
Everybody remembers Fred with Ginger, but he really looks like a little kid having a blast with Rita Hayworth, and she looks utterly joyful dancing with him. And boy, can she really dance!
Rita was sooo beautiful and graceful. I read somewhere that Fred really liked and respected Rita, she was a perfectionist like him and a brilliant dancer,(he also knew her and her father when they went around dancing in clubs etc). I thought it was Ginger he only tolerated, but i could be wrong XD
I can't stop watching it. I am fascinated because I am Astaire fan (long time) but I can't keep my eyes of Rita Hayworth. There is something in the way she moves or that look on her face. I don't know what. I just love this clip. Thanks.
Yes, without being able to fully articulate it myself, I understand exactly what you mean, I think one word would be charisma, and I believe Rita had a pure heart, she radiates something sincere.
Duh. Rita (Cansino) Hayworth was probably one of the most gorgeous and sexy women ever to appear in Hollywood musicals. If she had had Eleanor Powell's dancing talent and athletic ability, no one would remember Fred Astair. As it was, he made her look even better than she was.
the cutest routine ever.... such a great, upbeat little tune, and the dancing! really packs a punch for clocking in at under 40 seconds of actual dancing, no? i recorded this segment off TCM and watch it every morning, puts me in a good mood
Hello,I think the best number that they do was the shorty george,(you where never lovieller)I think is the more difficult choreography that Rita and Fred worked.Roman from Buenos Aires
Rita was one of the most impressive talents to ever grace the screen. I've seen this routine of Astaire and Rita many times in the past, and maybe I'm biased, but I think Rita appeared more comfortable and showed better form than Astaire. Check out the elbows and posture.
He said Rita was his favorite partner, love Ginger, but I think Rita has something extra, she sparkles, she's ethereal, in the slow numbers, so graceful
Really! Where did you read that? I'm curious? Read somewhere and it was stated during showing of this movie on TV that Rita was his favorite. Wonder why he only tolerated her, she seems to be "right there" and so graceful. I also love Eleanor Powell, my favorite number is the begin the begin w/him.
About ten years ago I read several books about Fred -- if I understand right, personally he was obsessed with athletic dancing ability, so he tended to judge his costars accordingly, and Eleanor was tops there. Maybe he also made a remark that he really liked Rita as a person though, or something.
Yes, that makes sense, about Eleanor, and it's well known that he was the ultimate perfectionist about his dancing. He must have admired Gene Kelly, Mr. Athletic Dancer personified. But I wonder where the Rita is my favorite remark came from if the words are accurate. On these videos he always looks like he's thoroughly enjoying her. She's so light, fluid, ballet like grace.
Astaire never seriously named a favorite partner (though many sources incorrectly state that he did), but he greatly respected Powell for her tap ability and Hayworth for her dancing ability as well. Rita began as a Spanish dancer in an act with her father.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please view my clip of some rare 1940's movie star cards, including Rita Hayworth , Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, Lauren Bacall, Bing Crosby and many more.

He said Rita was his favorite partner, love Ginger, but I think Rita has something extra, she sparkles, she's ethereal, in the slow numbers, so graceful

Hmm... the way I remember it, he respected Eleanor Powell, and tolerated Rita.

Everybody liked Rita as a person. She was so sweet, and nice, and demure. I've also read that Rita was Fred's favorite dancing partner...
