One of my favourites; I have it on a Brian Eno Rarities EP and track 2 is "the Lion Sleeps Tonight" :~) It can also be found on CD on "The Best Glam Rock Album In The World…Ever"
Bryan Ferry circa 1973 aka Roxy Music 'For Your Pleasure' sounded pretty good, with Eno's knobs on. I have nothing against Eno in principle, but in practice, and feel that, on balance he was a negative influence. One man's de-construction is another man's destruction. 'Another Green World' is a good one, the same year as the excellent 'Physical Graffiti' ( yet poles apart ). I bought both. It is something to do with the undermining of the band or group effort, Q: many talentless prima donnas.
@Jlipnicki You sound like Bryan Ferry circa 1973..This is a great song..It's funny as hell...Lighten up..Eno's purpose back then was to deconstruct music..
The track was recorded at Island studios ,All Saints Road sometime in the summer 1974 whilst on tour promoting "Here come the warm jets" the musicians are the band both playing with and supporting Brian Eno,namely the Winkies.Yes it is a miked leslie for the guitar and Eno was experimenting with echo and phasing or rather, out of phasing, consequently the bass got lost in the mix.
"Seven Deadly Finns" 1974 Island single WIP.6178 UK only, recorded sometime 'tween Eno albums, Here Come the Warm Jets, rel. November 1973, & Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), rel. November 1974, both Island Records UK. AFAIK, only album appearance was Eno Box II: Vocals, Virgin 39114 3CD set released November 1993 futile Google search finds no lyric, damn! "The seventh deadly Finn was so tall and thin he should have never been with those guys...." Guess I'll have to transcribe by ear. =30=
I'd forgotten how great this is...I have the 7" but nothing to play it on! Bands today (expecting flood of people telling me I am wrong) have forgotten how to be FUNNY as well as appropriate. Eno is a tremendously inspiring creative, never fails to find an interesting route. "The seventh deadly Finn was so tall and thin he should have never been with those guys...." indeed.
I can't understand why this isn't known by every Eno fan. It's his "Virginia Plain." A friend and I put out a bootleg of it in the 70s. B-side was "The Lion Sleep Tonight" if memory serves.
@friendlier I couldn't remember either ( haven't heard this since the time it came out), but the B side was "Later On", I think from 'No Pussyfooting". 'The Lion' had 'I'll Come Running to Tie Your Shoes' as the B side, i'm pretty sure.
Doesn't it still sound great? That terrific crunching intro!
Not sure if anyone is aware - or really cares - but Seven Deadly Finns is available on a compilation CD called "The Best Glam Rock CD in the World...Ever!" (their exclamation mark). I got mine for £2 off ebay. Other than that it's pretty hard to find digitally.
It is a hell of a single...I read somewhere once that Scott Walker was the bass player on it...but try as I might I can't actually hear any bass on it! BTW, I love your blog, mucho interesting.
@vambo23 There is in fact bass on it, if you get a real high quality version you hear a bass run at the very beginning (but agreed, it is very faint).
At last! Last heard in '74, been trying on and off to get a copy over the years, even wrote to Island records in 1982, but nae joy. The "pearls" were a bit lost on me back then though!
Heh, yeah, frequently, except I think you mean "A New Career In a New Town". Fantastic record. I always laugh when people say Phil Collins invented that 80's gated drum sound when it obviously came from "Low". Mind you, a lot of those earlier seventies records are a bit gatey in the snare dept too, most notably some of The Slade and Glitter records.
Aaargh! Silly me! That's what happens when you are trying to write something in the same room as a 13 year old boy! (-: I always think that the origin of the Glitter-stomp drum sound is from the Plastic Ono Band. I'm sure it influenced all the producers in the following few years....Hotlegs Neanderthal Man?
Definitely a drummy link between "Rock & Roll Pt.2" & "Instant Karma". I read a fascinating autobiographical account of the long long hours Mike Leander spent in his quest to perfect the Glitter sound. It was in some studio-tech book. Didn't mention "Karma" but the connection is indisputable. I think the Spector production used stereo tape sync anomalies that cause slight brain/rhythm neural confusion when you get to the drum-breaks, similarly: G. Morodor "I Feel Love", "From Here to Eternity."
The Mike Leander thing sounds interesting, he's always played his cards close to his chest in anything I've read with him. Instant Karma has an amazing drum sound. Spector's productions for the Plastic Ono Band alone would have been enough to elevate him to genius status never mind everything else he has done. I love the sound of the "drums" or are they actually cardboard boxes?!? on Give Peace A Chance. The whole Glitter-Stomp is there. I always liked the sound of The Sweet's drums.
The cardboard box thingy on GPAC again has that strange sync anomaly thing going on. I think a facet of that effect might also be tape-saturation. The Plastic Ono saxes are very Glitter-y too, did you ever hear that Elephant's Memory record? Further evidence of Leander's talent can be found in the GENIUS 12-string guitar/horns/ piano arrangement on Billy Fury's "In Thoughts of You."
@xwsftassell I've been meaning to delve deeper into both Mike Leander and G Moroder's work for a while and this exchange has convinced to do so now, thanks. My elder brother bought Sometime in New York City the same day I got Ziggy Stardust and I remember a battle for turntable time. He won as it was his hi-fi. I remember being blown away by the ferocity of Sunday Bloody Sunday's intro, what a sound. Have you heard the Elephants Memory track from the soundtrack for Midnight Cowboy? Its a lulu.
Can see what you mean about the 'prototype for Bowie's 'Boys Keep Swinging' thing,
Cool upload man, never heard this before 'yikes' O_o but its excellent. I wasnt a big glam head, i got into Eno's ambient sound scape stuff. S'pose that's the stoner in me. But this cool, right down to the last groovy yodel as JITG23 says: ]
Good old Eno! And a lovely video which looks like Jesus in a nomelette at times. I thought about doing Dead Finks as a video - but this is more of a song innit! 5* ya bampot.
Why thank you Mort, Dead Finks is great too, I've been playing loads of Eno recently, theres so much more I've yet to listen to..."My Squelchy Life"...that's next. Jesus in an omelette...that's very early Eno too! (-:

This is crap. Eno talks a good music but rarely makes it. Messing about with knobs does not a music make.
