can't be right. as we think of it as a surface, you've got to consider, that it won't change. the 4 the 4 parts are overlapping the beneath lying gray square before by a minimal amount of mm². these are then "rearranged" into the middle by turning the 4 parts and as we learned in school, the surface is the biggest, when the 2dimensional object is squared (speaking of the whole, if people ask, how a little oblong overlap might have such effect on this trick) rather than an oblong. obvious troll.

Note the final square is slightly smaller than the first. This is due to the arrangement of the shapes. The extra paper hanging of the brown square underneath provides the missing area in the center

i tried it and it worked. the square actually became smaller after 4 pieces were switched but its extremely hard to notice the size difference with our naked eye. good trick!
