@Worldwidedestiny, the song is indicating that only the rich can afford the silk that is woven. The poor, who make it, do not buy the silk. They only get a bit of money for their work, just enough to buy sticky rice.

@viewsriras, thanks for those very interesting comments about Tai Oratai and Nout Voranout. Tai was born in Ubon Ratchasima Province, and, as you say, she has many fans in Isaan and Laos. It would be nice to see Tai in the movie that you mentioned.

Yes, I do believe that silk can be grown in north Thailand (Lanna) from Bo Sang, near Chiang Mai to the Chiang Rai/Chiang Saen area. Thanks again.

When the first time I listen to this song was the time I sat on backseat of Volvo’s car belong to rich guy in BKK, It's remind me about my Mom's Life in Isaan and my passed experience when I was growth up in isaan. My eyes were red and about to cry.....I like it so much…. Always back to listen too......

@ToniDoll63 yes, this song restores my vivid familial reminiscence when we were toiling in our silk farm that I assisted my grand mother and father to pick baimorn lieng mai. During lunch time, my grandmother usually cooked sticky rice and cooked a bamboo shoot soup mixed with fish caught from rice field. Yes, we are the sons and daughters of the sticky rice and Padaek. Can you please give a solid advice how can I survive if there are no sticky rice and Padaek sold in Asian grocery stores.

I think it is great that you worked like Tai spinning cloth. You both help people by making clothes for them. One nice point about Tai is that she remembers her past, and is proud of her culture and the fact that she can be traditional and modern together. Tai is a very talented and thoughtful lady. Your song restores my vivid familial reminiscence when we were toiling in the rice field and silk farm. Thanks Toni Doll, Tai is a wonderful performer, and this song is special to me because it reminds me of the villages in Thailand. I went to one village like this on the border of Sakhon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom provinces last summer (2009), and I saw looms like this one Tai is using.

Yes, you are correct.. In northern Thailand (Lampang to the Burmese/Lao border) the people eat sticky rice. They also eat it in Isaan (northeast Thailand) and Laos, and the Shan States of Burma. They probably eat sticky rice in the Sip-song-panna region of China too (Dai). The central and southern Thais eat plain rice. I should add that many of the Isaan people living in urban areas eat plain rice too.

Beautiful song. I knew some inlaws and many in the village who raised and spun silk. You're right - they rarely got to wear silk or see a hotel that sells it. The profit margin is not much for all the work that goes into it, especially mutmee.

I was born in Laos and merried a Lao woman who has root in Uborn Rajathani. She confirm to me that this song is very true. She remembered her grandma rainsing silkworm, but had no silk fabric of her own.

Thanks for that information, which is very interesting. I met an Isaan family just across the border from Sakhon Nakhon in Nakhon Phanom province. The older woman in the family still made clothes this way.

i'm a thai kid that grew up in the US. my parents always tell me i have to speak isaan because i have to remember where i came from.

there's a line in this song that i love. it talks about how people who make silk usually dont even have silk to wear. it reminded me of my grandma who always giving me silk and i didnt realized how significant that is til my mom told me that silk is all grandma have in her procession and she gave it to me. the song makes me miss my grandma.
