Amazing landscape...I have an 1985 Mk1, i am the original owner and the only thing expensive that i had to change,was a broken carburetor,the rest of the car remain inmaculated and original. Without a doubt this is a great car.and was built , proudly in Puebla México.
Mk 4 with 400,000 km here, totaly reliable, TDI totally recomended. These cars are reliable, don't listen to people who judge a car by driving them 10,000 km. If you haven't put a minimum 200,000 km on it you obviously haven't had a chance to judge the reliablity of a car.
the only bad thing about Golf is, that you see them million times on the road and that makes them somewhat "boring". but the fact that millions of people are driving this car shows how good they really are! you cant be wrong with a Golf.

Mk4 was NOT a disaster! The '337', '20th A.E.', and 24V VR6 GTI's were FANTASTIC!!! The '337' was FASTER than the Mk5 and Mk6 as well. 0-60 in UNDER 6 seconds!!! Plus, the Mk4 designs look a LOT more Euro than Mk5 or Mk6. End of story.
All bought new, Mk3 front suspension rebuild at 6,000 miles, door lock failure,distributer replaced 9,000 miles, numerous engine sensors. Mk 4 steering column at 12,000 miles, again at 50,000 miles. It's well know windows drop into the doors, locks fail, gearboxes that shed rivets and break at low milages. Window wipers that seize because VW didn't think they needed seals....so horseshit off!

I noticed you didn't mention reliability. If you where sitting in the golf in a crash I wouldn't worry , you wouldn't be travelling very fast, you would be waiting for road side assistance.
there is no major difference between manufacturers and safety even the Golf gets a recommended report from consumer reports that it wouldnt' have if it's reliablity was bad. The difference between the most reliable and least reliable car is somthing like 1 problem out of 100 cars. Golf is just as reliable as any other vehicle.

De Volkswagen Golf VI moet een degelijke auto worden, net als al zn voorgangers. Dus je moet echt geen spannende dingen van zo'n auto verwachten, dan moet je kijken naar andere auto's. Maar waarschijnlijk begrijpen bepaalde mensen (dat zie ik aan een paar reacties hieronder) niet helemaal wat de testrijder allemaal heeft uitgelegd, want hij zegt al dat het geen spectaculaire auto zal worden en dat zal ook verder niemand van de kenners beweren...
Ze laten nooit zien hoe ruim de achterbak is.
