Hide the debt while showing fake quartely profits and tell its employees its ok to invest your 401k in Enrons stock and investors should also be optimistic. You have to eliminate debt! The interest that the US pays on its debt, to foreign bond holders, is used by these same individuals and companies to come back in and buy up companies, utilities, and so on. In the Reagan years when there was a "threat" of government shutdown was said that if the government shut down, "only essential services would be preserved". Only essential services? Well, then, a government "shut-down" would just be the fast-track to responsible government. I worked at NASA through the two "shutdowns" around 1994, and it was nothing at all.

The Feds closed the national parks, to try to make it look like they were shutting down things that were "important", but nothing actually important was stopped or even slowed. Even the people I worked with who got vacations for those periods of time were later paid their missed wages. Paid vacations!

I worked through both the shutdowns, since my job was supposedly "essential", they gave me $50.

Exports are 12% of the US economy. If the dollar got very weak, the export sector would grow rapidly and the dollar would quickly rebound. There is tons of historical precedent to support that statement. Too bad Ron Paul has head so far up Hayek's ass he doesn't understand how the world works.

It also means that inflation not only affects our goods and services but those of most countries in the world. It is in fact the reason for the spikes in food prices that have caused food shortages and subsequent rioting in the middle east, causing our oil prices to rise.

Industrial production started stagnating under Reagan in mid 1984. Reagan devalued the currency to boost demand for exports and by 1986, industrial production started to grow again. Also, look at the effect Rubin's strong dollar policy had in the late 80s. Trade deficit went from 1% to 5% of GDP while dollar appreciated 25%.

Trade deficit was 1.2% of GDP in 97 and 4.5% of GDP in 2003. If the dollar crashes, it would boost our exports. If the dollar gets strong, it hurts our exports. This is a commonly known fact. Stating otherwise exposes you as someone who is ignorant.
