@07sandrewsworth That is caused by Cherenkov radiation, where charged particles released by nuclear decay polarise dielectric molecules, which then release energy in the form of visible light at blue frequencies when they return to their normal state. Well you did ask... :)
Boy oh boy! A whole year has passed with some of these comments about England" and the English"..It's "BRITAIN" or the UK if you like, why don't these people ever research simple things before whinging and whining about a "British" documentary aimed at a "British audience. One might of enlightened all these simpletons of the fact that not one "British" person moaned and groaned at Robin Hood running around Sherwood forest with an American accent. JESUS CHRIST!!!!
@CanaanVideos The liquidators used lead suits during the clean up. But they were up against levels of radiation that no person had ever dreamed about before. They could only work about 40 seconds at a time even with the layers of lead for protection. They knew what they were facing and that they would definitely contract radiation sickness after the operation. However, they valued the state's saftey more than their lives and volunterily carried it out.
@itskirstybetchx I fight to the end. But then I do understand where you are coming from. What happens if you have a family? Many circumstances...a lot of amazing feats come out of humans when something horrible happens. Us humans are very fragile, yet incredibly tough. Ying and Yang my friend. We have it all.
I just finished watching the entire series and I wanted to see part one again where everything goes wrong and I am screaming at my labtop, "GET OUT!!!"
So am i to understand that is accident was caused by that dudes Power tripping ego dispite being advised against it, Then tried to blame the same person that advised against and only did the test under his direct order????
actually the only reason i looked at the comments was to see if my suspicions of this production being actually quite cheesy were correct and if i should stop wasting my time. you may wonder why i would need such comments for that but it's a time saver not to mention interesting.
BBC was forced to use British actors. They are British if I am correct, and I doubt they had the budget to get some awesome award winning actors. Anyways, great docudrama. Not very many facts but there are other documentaries. Imagine the "what the unholy f*ck has happened" factor when you are sent to inspect the reactor and find a blasted open vat of molten uranium.
@Whatupwidat: Reactor is something more serious than a plant. And heroes of the video are nuclear physicists, not ordinary technicians. Well of course that could be, but in the video it is shown in very indecent manner. It's OK when the maintenance staff does it in their rest room between inspection rounds, but not in control room... I can imagine the sailor is smoking on board of his small ship, but can you imagine the captain smoking on the bridge of nuclear submarine?
Oh, dear! Engineers smoking at work? And BBC has put their label on this video? I would never believe in that. I am happy that the heroes are not drinking wodka – why not? I am sorry, but the film looks stupid, the same as "Enemy at gates" movie... If one want to create a real documentary film, please, take it seriously.
@dkatsubo "Engineers smoking at work?" - it was 1986, workers at Sellafield (a UK plant) were allowed to smoke on duty up until 1992, or at least that's what my friend's dad (who works there) said.
@wertos22 It was because it was his fault the reactor exploded so imagine loving with yourself after killing thousands of people. So if he were still alive he would as the guy you blow up the reactor.
the BBC used to have different styles of dance as the start of all there TV shows when they were being introduced - and this show has a wheel chair dance crew.
@cyberboob12 That comes from the bbc interlude between programs when they are announced they have those sort of things to break the blank space, there are no commercial adverts on a bbc channel because it is funded by the British public via the tv licence.
@furtherbeyond I'm curious how you calculated that. Has 100x the amount of radiation been released? Have 100x the number of people been affected?
How much contamination do you believe has been released from fukushima? How do you explain the discrepancy between your claim and the 24/7 monitoring that's been done all over japan for years, and is publicly available in real time (from mext for example) ? Is the whole thing fake?
You don't know what happened in either of the accidents, do you?
@ImMichaelTaylor I'm curious how you got to the brilliant conclusion that I had actually calculated that. Are you a troll or just a smart ass? I'm curious if have you tried to figure that one out for yourself.
@furtherbeyond "I'm curious how you got to the brilliant conclusion that I had actually calculated that." Because you acted like you thought there was a reason to believe it was true.
"have you tried to figure that one out for yourself." Yes, constantly.
"a troll or just a smart ass" Is that what you call any attempt to find out the facts before you accept something?
@furtherbeyond: May it be possible he is just a rationalist? As far as nuclear accidents go, Fukushima is worse than TMI, but much less worse than Chernobyl, by every measurement that I know of. If Fukushima had happened 25 years ago, no one would remember it besides historians.
@MrReaper2030: I'd prefer to think of it as quiet and peaceful (including politically). You know that it will probably be the foremost animal sanctuary in central Asia in another 20 years? Too bad the aurochs couldn't have lasted long enough to enjoy it.
@jncarlos007: Look it up. He did. The Soviet hierarchy/KGB certainly didn't gain by that act; it had a very salutary effect on at least relations in science societies and put a big spotlight onto the effects of secrecy within a self-serving bureaucracy. Yeltsin awarded him the Hero of Russia award, their highest. You can be cynical if you want, but if the KGB did it they stepped on their crank big time.
@TheSurialpaca: Ummmmmm, 20 mSv/yr is the standard for exposure. While it is best that no additional exposure be the goal, particularly for children, the average background radiation on the average is 6.2 mSv/yr, from the natural nuclides in the Earth and cosmic rays. As such things go (compared to most of the US in the early 60s) this is small. It is a credit to nuclear science that we are even able to measure and recognize the effects of that kind of dosage; we couldn't back then.
This shows how bad the cover up was. Blatantly lying about how a reactor designed in the 50's was flawless, when other much better designs such as the BWR were in service.
@parisTDR250: About what? The explosion? Once the USSR finally admitted it, it was in the papers everywhere; I read an account in the Denver Post on 5/14/86. Most of the facts are verified through Legasov's papers, the book written by Dyatlov (the supervisor of the fatal test), papers of the USSR released as glasnost set in, lots of scientific research. I am enthusiastic about nuclear power, and intend to study nuclear physics, my reference always be Valeri Legasov, I admire and respect as a true scientist!
shit, i freaked by seeing that hanging monument. my heart is beating now. how could these idiots put such an image like this, what if children see it? damn, and im 26, lol!
@nazirdjon It's made by BBC so the British made it. They have topless women in TV commercial between kid shows. So I don't think that was shocking. If you meant what if kids saw it on Youtube...well that's why kids aren't allowed on Youtube.

@BayouBluesMan They also built it in an area that is well know for earthquakes. Strike1. Tsunamis are a well known disaster there. Strike 2. And have we forgotten they have a volcano near by that could go off. Strike 3!
I feel sorry for them because of the earthquake and tsunami but they could have done a better job when they decided to build a nuclear plant there.
@BayouBluesMan I meant I felt sorry to them do to the "natural" disaster that happened. But Ok if anything happened where you lived and you all need help I won't send any. ;)
@johncase7777 if that thing happenned here the company's execs would be dismembered by one seriously pissed of mob, as far as helping us , u already do , thanks.
@johncase7777: The Japanese are something of a special case; they live on an island with no coal or oil reserves; no special wind or solar advantage, no hydro to speak of. Nuclear, while contraindicated by tectonics, is just about their only option. Where should they have built it better? There is nowhere on the island which is a better place, really.
@DefinitelyNotLying: Is that bacterial or viral typhoid cancer? No- sorry. I couldn't resist.
You mean thyroid cancer. Luckily, that cancer is now about 98% curable. The medicos figure that there were about 4000 excess thyroid cancers caused by Chernobyl, which resulted in about 15 known (official) deaths. Since the particular isotope that causes thyroid cancer, I-131, has an 8 day half life, if he has that cancer now, it wasn't because of Chernobyl.
A pretty good try - but people don't waste your time on this, watch the Discovery Channel Documentary with russian actors, they really did a wonderful job. It makes you feel as it was actually filmed during that night.
@GREENVK I wouldn't listen to that AlbinoGhandi. A arrogant keyboard internet hooligan. Thank you for uploading this. I have always been fascinated with this disaster don't know why just always been interested about it.
@AlbinoGhandi Boo hoo, ask mommy to make you documentary. "I wanna documentary mommy if you love me you'll make me a documentary on Chernobyl, waaa waaaa waaaaaaa."
@AlbinoGhandi It's a well put together Docudrama. The documentary comes from what this man accounts in his suicide video. That is your fact part you douche. They are re-enacting what really happened so people can know who was to blame and what communism can and most likely do.
I mean no disrespect. What happened at Chernobyl was terrible.
But did anyone notice how from 6:00 till 6:05 that the one with the glasses teleported from one side of the room to the other. Also that he looks much like Simon Pegg
if this was filmed today they would use stupid Russian accents and when I say that I mean that it wouldnt be a genuine accent just a mimicing accent that would be annoying. I am glad it is filmed like this the only other way is genuine Russian/Ukrainian actors and actresses which may have been a nice touch. To reiterate The it is the mimicking of accents that documentaries do these days that annoy me, each language has a rhythm of speech that is often forgoten
@nunvikingsofthesea Western people pretending to be Ukrainians? That would make it so much worse. This way its easier for western people to see them as ordinary people which they were. this is a accurate documentary that fits with the testimonies of the staff..
@ProxyNuker: Pretty much right. Optimal capture of neutrons by fissile components (the U-235 in this case) requires that the neutrons be captured at a relatively slow speed; high speed ones simply aren't captured. So moderating the neutrons increases the amount of fission going on, hence the amount of energy produced. Graphite moderator acts like an accelerator, while boron "control" acts like a brake.
South American is the first place to be fucked up by the stupid jap´s decision of keeping those fucking nuclear power plants on!!!! IF that shit go loose it will be a genocide wourldwide!!
@renatoavatarian the jap nuclear plants are of a totally different design than Chernobyl No.4, they're still dangerous but they won't explode like this one did
@traxxasmaxx33 Given enough water thats being converted to steam in the attempt to keep the units cool, an explosion is Very Possible. Not Nuke-STEAM. This is the type of blast that Chernobyl had. Steam must be vented from the units to prevent this. And that steam is RADIOACTIVE! Japan is in Deeper doo doo than anyone could ever imagine.
@graybeard420 no doubt If they did explode it would be an absolute disaster. But the japanese reactors have containment structures, Chernobyl had absolutely none. I hope nothing like this ever happens again.
@renatoavatarian: Whoa, get a grip, fella. You're wrong on so many levels it's difficult to sort. 1-Japan's in the northern hemisphere, so SA isn't any "first place". 2-There was no such "decision", the reactors shut down automatically when the earthquake was sensed. They remain so to this day. 3-"Genocide" is not even on the menu. 4-Worldwide is unlikely in the extreme.
Everyone knows American documentaries tend to be quite overblown and overly dramatic, American TV loves that needless rubbish sprinkled over. Hollywood has no hesistation in impairing to the truth of historical events either sadly. U-571 is an embarrassing film which springs to mind
@crispysmith11 sorry to interrupt, but i think Fukushima's much safer, because Fukushima uses water as a cooling device. Chernobyl uses graphite, which holds and disperses much more radiation compared to water.
Japan doesn't need to cover up anything that will happen, beacause the whole world is watching now. :)
it's so sad and scary: (I hope it does not explode again: s because when that happens is it all around the world search for survivors, I read in the newspaper
chernobyl blew up 1:23 am.... and only 5 ppl survived..(2 ppl are still alive) 2am 10 ppl was there and nobody was down and panic? :O they got it wrong.. they shoud made some research...
I feel so bad for those guys who saw the reactor from above. They might as well have ended their lives right there and then b/c they swallowed up lethal radiation whole.
okay, I read Ken Alibek's book back in high school, so it was two years ago. And i read that it had to do with some pipe not being well maintained and it started to leak, which caused it to erupt. But I'm not sure, so please correct me if I'm wrong. And b the way, that book is amazing! I read it three times!
The disaster was caused by improper practice in the safetey test planned for that night. The uranium rods began to cause an overheat, and since the boron rods they use to cool down the reaction were graphite-tipped, it caused a sudden surge of heat which caused the explosion. I'm not saying I've got every detail right here, but this is roughly what happened...
just saw it on mys school.really amazing documentary

My mates dad was in northern ukraine when it happened, he has typhoid cancer now :(
DefinitelyNotLying 10 months ago

These british actors just don't have it..
Peace.

HammersGamingChannel 10 months ago
mediocre documentary, but decent enough drama.
samwardell 10 months ago
if this was filmed today they would use stupid Russian accents and when I say that I mean that it wouldnt be a genuine accent just a mimicing accent that would be annoying. I am glad it is filmed like this the only other way is genuine Russian/Ukrainian actors and actresses which may have been a nice touch. To reiterate The it is the mimicking of accents that documentaries do these days that annoy me, each language has a rhythm of speech that is often forgoten

nunvikingsofthesea 10 months ago
@nunvikingsofthesea Western people pretending to be Ukrainians? That would make it so much worse. This way its easier for western people to see them as ordinary people which they were. this is a accurate documentary that fits with the testimonies of the staff..
aboajaka 10 months ago
And yes, they STILL DO use graphite moderated reactors. Look into AGR, Magnox and RBMK reactors.
Mainly used in the UK and Russia, also mainly used for creating weapons-grade Plutonium.
ProxyNuker 10 months ago
The graphite was NOT coolant, it was used as a moderator which slows down photons and neutrons, thus making a nuclear reaction possible.
Without some kind of moderator, the particles move to fast to create fission.
ProxyNuker 10 months ago
@ProxyNuker: Pretty much right. Optimal capture of neutrons by fissile components (the U-235 in this case) requires that the neutrons be captured at a relatively slow speed; high speed ones simply aren't captured. So moderating the neutrons increases the amount of fission going on, hence the amount of energy produced. Graphite moderator acts like an accelerator, while boron "control" acts like a brake.

South American is the first place to be fucked up by the stupid jap´s decision of keeping those fucking nuclear power plants on!!!! IF that shit go loose it will be a genocide wourldwide!!
renatoavatarian 10 months ago
@renatoavatarian You're an idiot. Nuclear reactors don't work like that. Not anymore.
CommandoDude 10 months ago
@renatoavatarian the jap nuclear plants are of a totally different design than Chernobyl No.4, they're still dangerous but they won't explode like this one did
traxxasmaxx33 10 months ago
@traxxasmaxx33 Given enough water thats being converted to steam in the attempt to keep the units cool, an explosion is Very Possible. Not Nuke-STEAM. This is the type of blast that Chernobyl had. Steam must be vented from the units to prevent this. And that steam is RADIOACTIVE! Japan is in Deeper doo doo than anyone could ever imagine.
graybeard420 10 months ago
@graybeard420 no doubt If they did explode it would be an absolute disaster. But the japanese reactors have containment structures, Chernobyl had absolutely none. I hope nothing like this ever happens again.
traxxasmaxx33 10 months ago
@graybeard420: How did that turn out for you? Just how deep is the doo doo?
puncheex 6 months ago
@renatoavatarian: Whoa, get a grip, fella. You're wrong on so many levels it's difficult to sort. 1-Japan's in the northern hemisphere, so SA isn't any "first place". 2-There was no such "decision", the reactors shut down automatically when the earthquake was sensed. They remain so to this day. 3-"Genocide" is not even on the menu. 4-Worldwide is unlikely in the extreme.
I fear you are simply a fear-monger.

Everyone knows American documentaries tend to be quite overblown and overly dramatic, American TV loves that needless rubbish sprinkled over. Hollywood has no hesistation in impairing to the truth of historical events either sadly. U-571 is an embarrassing film which springs to mind

Hey GREENVK, do you think the Fukushima explosion will be a repeat of Chernobyl?
crispysmith11 10 months ago
@crispysmith11 sorry to interrupt, but i think Fukushima's much safer, because Fukushima uses water as a cooling device. Chernobyl uses graphite, which holds and disperses much more radiation compared to water.
Japan doesn't need to cover up anything that will happen, beacause the whole world is watching now. :)

okay, I read Ken Alibek's book back in high school, so it was two years ago. And i read that it had to do with some pipe not being well maintained and it started to leak, which caused it to erupt. But I'm not sure, so please correct me if I'm wrong. And b the way, that book is amazing! I read it three times!
Prismace2009 1 year ago
@Prismace2009
StBoffers 11 months ago
can you imagine how you would feel and what you would think when you saw that the reactor had been destroyed. I know I would be scared beyond belief.
