The original is actually Spanish, you can easily notice it because the coins and banknotes that they use are Euros, whereas in this one they use Mexican pesos. I've read that Alvarez accepted that the original idea is not his. However, I think this version has a better quality.

I came across this video because my brother posted me the link to "The Power of Words". I wanted to comment on the video when I read someone's remark that the idea was taken from this one. While the message of both films in the same, the effect is immense. "Power of words" brought tears to my eyes, and The story of a Sign made me cry. @chadettat Two different messages. Historia de un letrero is a piece of art and takes a look into the human spirit and the beauty of the world. The commericals message is hey we are touching people hearts you should do business with us. I understand that what you are saying, but I just think it is wrong to take someone's creative work and use it for advertising without their knowledge or consentand then try to blow it off as a homage. I know of half rated Ad companies that wouldn't do this.

An homage would selectively borrow from, refine and tip its hat to the original concept with a subtle wink and a smile. An homage would not blatantly thieve with no class. The film was produced by REDSNAPPA, a -business- producing internet videos. It's hard to deny, these unimaginative chaps slapped up a terrible copy of this video for commercial gain, not for mass love. That, my friend, is a dog act. Fuck them.

This version does add a lot of emotion and beauty to the message that is not in the more commercial video. Yesterday what my friends felt was some hope and encouragement. Having grown up in a border town to Mexico watching Spanish language films does not present any barriers to me to enjoy the original. I laud the creators of this film for creating such a wonderful day for us all.
