@Z840 um... i can play 67songs by nirvana, and look at your fingers when you are picking come as you are, you are shaping power chords the whole time, and yes,heart shape box had a lot of power chords, its just tuned in drop d so it doesnt use the same shape. and before you correct someone who does a tutorial on youtube, remember that he remembers hundreds of songs in his head, so maybe he might slip up on a word.

When I play the A power chord it doesn't sound the same, and doesn't sound good, my guitar is in standard tuning (I'm assuming yours is too because you didn't specify) Is it sounding different because I'm playing an acoustic?
