Saying that one don't need health insurance is like saying that babies don't need their mommies when in trouble.
The problem today is NOT that American society can't afford doctors. The problem today is our citizens going to hospitals, only to be refused treatment because they can't treat certain illnesses based on their "private insurance plan."
Health is a very important aspect for any society in the world. And because of that, we need healthcare reform at high levels.
Critics complain that a public plan has an inherent advantage over private plans because the public plan won't have to show profits. But plenty of private plans are already not-for-profit. And if nonprofit plans can offer high-quality healthcare more cheaply than for-profit plans, why should for-profit plans be coddled? The public plan would merely force profit-making private plans to take whatever steps were necessary to become more competitive., that's a plus.
According to what you said, there are 30 million Americans out there who just say to themselves, "Eh, I don't need insurance." :S
The idea that insurance is "unimportant" is inaccurate. Us Americans, as a public of fully-functional citizens, need insurance.
And as far as "illegal aliens" are concerned, they should get insurance also. If the government failed to make them legal citizens, then they should get benefits, just like everybody else.
I'm a hard working 28 year old American citizen with a college degree. My department was downsized and I was laid off. I have been working since I was 16 years old, I always have a job, I always work hard. Right now finding a decent job with benefits in California is very difficult. I thought I was going to have my job forever. You really don't realize how quickly losing your job and becoming uninsured can happen until it happens to you. This can happen to any of us, yourself included!
It's morally wrong to leave 100 million Americans un or underinsured, 1 illness away from financial ruin. And it's wrong to burden small business with the outrageous insurance costs also -- found a cool site; Balkingpoints ; incredible satellite view of earth

Back up your statement. Please show the stats that say "a good chunk" of those that are uninsured are illegals vis-a-vis the total US population.
What is your source for saying most of the uninsured do not want insurance?
