You have to be dynamic, you shouldn't have your hands up or down at all times. There's a time for each of them. Also there's different styles for different modes of sparring, I dont go in the same way for Olympic style as I do for a continued style such as this
@SuperBlippo In taekwondo it's not practical or particularly useful to have your hands high, first of all your in an almost completely sideline stance as you are using primarily sideline kicks, tkd uses mainly foot movement to evade techniques because it's not effective blocking and grounding your body- you'll be taken out with a kick to the gut. Another thing is that a high guard can telegraph kicks because of slight shoulder movements, and makes it more difficult to see an angled technique on
@robbie7711 Not practical to keep your hands up????? agreed on hand telegraph, but you'd want to have damn slow hand movement. The brain reacts to what the eye sees, a foot movement is easier to telegraph as it moves the entire body(shift of balance). Hand movement is from the shoulder independent of the rest of the body. Not useful to keep your hands up??? PLEASE GET REAL!! Have you tried it, i find it works! and you wipe out half of your opponents arsenal, by limiting targets :)
@robbie7711 just in relation to the side on stance, surely if you are in almost fully side facing this limits your movement in to more linear movements than circular. Also, the TKD bible doesn't mention players should be side on, it's evolved to that state, and seems almost adaptive to WTF sparring. It seems these unwritten rules have become standard (keeps your hands down and stand side on). WHY what's practical about it, you can't move as well and your a sitting duck(no hands)
@robbie7711 also can I not throw a shoulder movement with my hands up to provoke an attack from an opponent that I could counter. Fight clever folks, hands up and not HIGH!!! back hand to the chin, front hand about 1 to 1.5 feet in front at same level.
NO NO NO SCRATCH ALL THAT!!!! keeps your hands down and stand side on!! WHY?? Cause that's the way we all do it okay!!! Yes Sir!
Only watched about half, had enough, their speed is the most notable aspect. Majority of attacks are telegraphed (Back foot stepping up before lead foot is used) anyone with quick hands can see this and jump over the guard, which is non-existent with all of the fighters. HANDS DOWN AROUND THE WASTE AWFUL. What is the problem with modern TKD practitioners, put your damn hands up, guard. Most other similar MA karate, kickboxing all keep their guards up.
@SuperBlippo Hands up does not suit this style of sport, remember this is the sporting side of ITF TKD. Hands are kept down in a lot of instances to provoke the opponent into attack ie. the body or head is open and thus counter is available. To fight like a boxer would puts the legs in a difficult position to attack or counter from. Again this is a sport not SD.
@Easyandy100 disagree 100%, can you not provoke an aggressive attacker in SD for counter? Are we not allowed to defend in Sport? The aspect you refer to is 'Trapping' which is commonly used in WTF, but I have my issues with that. Also can TKD players not position their feet in a difficult position?
@SuperBlippo TKD stand side on to minimise kicks, hands are kept lower as it is easier to block the kicks that way also balance has a lot to do with it as it is easier to move greater distances with hands low. It is a kicking sport and the stances are to maximise defence primarily against kicks NOT punches to the head like in boxing.. I did this TKD for five years and then moved on to boxing. The stances are different and very difficult to combine the two. Remember this is the sport TKD not SD.
@Easyandy100 I disagree. FYI it takes more than 5 years to develop a fighting style, unless you're a natural(which are few and far between). TKD stand side to minimize targets for opponent. It's not just a kicking sport. TKD wasn't thought as a sport it is thought as SD number one. This hands down crap is also not thought in the TKD bible, it has become the norm an attempt to mimic WTF, and it's flawed. 'It is easy to move greater distances with the hands low????? REALLY???
@Easyandy100 Check out Tomaz Barada, Multi World TKD ITF and Kickboxing champion. He integrates TKD and Boxing. He trains regularly with former IBF world champion Dejan Zavec. The stance you refer to in ITF is not taught it is accepted, and it is poor. Also check out 'Terry Donnelly spars Martin Lawless' the guy on the right is 40+ and overweight, and they are purposely sparring at 70% pace. it has Guard, footwook, punches, kicks all the things you say can't merge, oh and it's TKD
@SuperBlippo Different sport though (I know the style is TKD but the sport these guys you mention are in is different). That is my point. The sideways hands down stance suits the semi contact, point scoring, emphasis on kicking that is ITF TKD sport version. This is a SPORT not SD what are you not understanding? The SD side of TKD is completely different and FYI 'these clowns' would most probably rip your head off. Now be a good boy and listen to what others who know better are saying.
@Easyandy100 again you're so wide of the mark. But again you have 5 years expertise in this, so I'll take your word for it, I'll take my 25 years and stick it 'The sideways hands down stance suits the semi contact, point scoring, emphasis on kicking that is ITF TKD sport version.' what a load of crap. Tomaz Barada is 3 time world TKD 'sport version'?? champion. On Youtube you can find him systematically punch the head off people in the process, TKD sport version styley. HaHaHa!!
@Easyandy100 I'll go off now an be a good little boy, because you don't like what I have to say. Boohoo!! little andy throws his tantrum. Better watch out for those Head Ripping Clown Killers, what ever you do don't put hands up to defend yourself, especially in ITF TKD sport version competition, you've been warned. Spar like you fight and fight like you spar(One complements the other), sunshine :)
@ Easyand100 you're right 'these clowns' would probably rip my head off!!! with my hands down. Also, Carlsberg is probably the best larger in the world, but we all know it's not.
@Easyandy100 one last one Andy. Check Stephen Tapilatu from Holland, he makes pis s of everything you say, in fact check the entire Tapilatu family. They all make p iss of what you say. This are REAL champions not like the Killer Clowns in the video. Oh and they're ITF TKD sport version styley. 5 years hahahahahahahah!
@SuperBlippo I am quite lost for words at your immaturity. 'Spar like you fight'? WTF that does that mean. If you sparred like you fought it wouldn't be sparring. I can see what you are trying to say but I think you lack a fundamental understanding. Again this is not SD it's a sport. MMA is not SD it's a sport. Boxing is not SD it's a sport that all have different guards and stances that are optimal to winning that sport. What qualification do you have to say otherwise and be so patronising?
@Easyandy100 it's nice to see you found your words again. But, again I disagree 100% MMA, Boxing, Jiujitsu, Judo, TKD etc etc are ALL sports and are equally all SD's fact!. WTF - World Taekwondo Federation & ITF - International Taekwondo Federation, you also have AIMAA, UITF, ITF is also split into 2 or 3 sub trees, depending on what master you follow. Re: Tapilatu gettin KO'd, should've kept his hands up then shouldn't he, the clown!! my qualification is my anonymity! lesson over!
@Easyandy100 Andy I want to draw a line under this, we'll agree to disagree, I'm obviously upsetting you. My ideal and many others ITF TKD, is that it is becoming a weak MA because I see students only being taught this stuff dramatic hands down and nothing else, and they believe they can defend themselves, and maybe some can. Where you see the line between the Sport and SD, I also see. Where SD has laws which are extended from the Sport which have rules.
@Easyandy100 There is no rule or law to keep your hands down. So why? TKD sport is a game, a game of tag. And each player must defend and attack to score and obstruct a scoring area. This video and many others inhibits the defence aspect of ITF TKD sport or SD. It might be the way things are now, but sparring in ITF TKD wasn't like that 20 years ago, it's closer to WTF(Olympic style TKD) which is sad. Tapilatu and Barada prove that ITF TKD is not just a kicking sport they are champs
@SuperBlippo OK I checked out Tapilatu and one thing that stands out, as I have mentioned before, it's a different sport. He is a TKD proponent but he fights in full contact so guard and stance are different to semi contact point scoring, as seen in the clip above, where punches are low scoring and emphasis is on kicking. Also the fight I saw Tapilatu in he lost by KO with a left leg turning kick to his head; he should have kept his guard up.
@Easyandy100 also I love you and I want your babies. what was that song by Ottawan - 'Baby Hands Up'. Remember Jackie Chan playing Mr Miyagi, Kung Fu is in your life. But we all know he wasn't the real mr miyagi cause he's dead. But, Mr. Chan was trying to say spar like you fight and fight like you spar with in the rules of course, Rule 1 - 'Baby Hands Up' la lala la la 'Baby Hands Up'. 'You're putting a line, where there should not be a line' - lyrics by the Frames, I have others
@SuperBlippo Definitely confused but 'll join in "Hands up, baby hands up, gimme you love gimme gimme your love, gimme gimme' etc. Good luck with your training.
I'm only student black belt and these guys are obviously professional but I know that you always keep your hands up, close to your ribs and NEVER turn your back on an opponent while in a match even if you did get a point or it's over.
@leprechaunGIT you are a genius, You are dead right, keep those hands up, the way to fight is not like the guys in the video, whoever your instructor is they know the concept of defense, whether Sport or SD. And make sure you pass it on to your students. These clowns with their hands down are just asking for it.
fucking hell at 3:50 he went to nut the guy lmao. These rules are strange. Although it's good to have a different side to it. I prefer WTF rules though.
For anyone watching this playlist from my channel, here's a little snippet of game related trivia regarding this video...
The second opponent (wearing the white gloves), is Hwang Su Il. This is the Artist who was used for all the motion capture work for Hwaorang from the Tekken series.
You can almost recognise him from his gestures if you pay close attention!!!
@blurpboyz Kind of - Points are counted, but if someone is disqualified for being Injured or "falling down whether intentional or not", the other person generally wins by default, or a Draw is called.
we got a tournament yesterday and i was the first place...i was almost near black belt so like they gave me tests and it was easy and i became black belt and im popular on my country ^_^
im 14 n i was in tae-kwon-do for like 5 years lol, im a first degree black belt but i hated it cuz i was amazing at tournaments but we use saftey gear. gee or something. i wana be like friggin karate kid without gear, makes it more interesting. i know its for self defense and all but iwana be all "no mercy, no fear, no pain!" stuff
taekwondo is one of the best martial arts out there. but ppl think the sparring matchs are how they fight in real,(no they beat ass i real life fights!!!!!!!!!!!)
It's just common sense that ITF would be more practical in a real fight.
I think to become the best martial art you need to use as most parts of the body as you can (The head, punch, elbow, knee, shin and the back of the foot), it will then give you an advantage that you wouldn't have if you didn't use them. WTF doesn't get you any familiarity with punches.
ITF is actually relevant in mma or K-1 while WTF isn't...
@thefreed WTF-ITF, the same thing. They are both Taekwondo. Its not like at a WTF club you are simply not taught how to advantageously fight with other body parts and strike with the head, punch well, elbow, knee, shin and the back of the foot. Its not used in "Olympic" sparring as it is dirty tactics. Injuries are not a pleasant thing, and should never be severely experienced.
@TakeshiMomoshiro and then theres GTF and ITS aswell. GTF = global taekwondo and ITS = international taekwondo society (or something like that). we dont have much in the way of imagination :P
@TakeshiMomoshiro There is a new one called the GTF... and you guessed it. It stands for Global Taekwondo Federation. I saw it in Korea during the World champs. :p
@Eightleggedmoth Tbh GTF are not that new, I have practiced GTF taekwondo scince i was 3 years old and im now 16, its very much like ITF except we use head gear! You can get some of our fighting here somewhere, my fights are on here also!
@TakeshiMomoshiro itf tae kwon do uses both kicks and punches and only uses gloves boots and head guards wher as wtf only uses kicks and wears boots and a body suit. and tagb (dont know wat this stands for) doest use sighn wave
Well, as you already know the words behind the abbreviations, here a few signals to keep in mind when watching videos on TKD. You see a vest and head gear, you're watching WTF. You see unprotected body (like in this vid), you're watching ITF. Ordinarily, WTF will barely use any hand techniques and won't hit to the head on purpose. Due to the sports-oriented nature of WTF style, where the fight is concerned with scoring points, issues of balance are compromised in favor or speed.
belive me some tae kwondo schools are bad like i saw this one where guys throw punches a kick in the mirror if you guys know any tkd schools on gresham pm me
More practical in a sense since it really counter normal "street fighting"
BUT if your opponenet or attacker in a real situation cant fight worth shit, TKD would be nice because of the natural counterablilty it has to lack of skill.
But if your opponent is skilled and not doing TKD it becomes really useless in the sense of your gaurd is low, and makeing you an easy target. But Muay Thai was made to counter that
Regardless of whether or not you have practiced TKD in ITF, GTF, USTF, ATF, WTF federations. Look up the history and founder of Taekwon Do so you can get the facts right. R.I.P. General Choi Hong Hi
Now this is the taekwondo i was looking for. I'm not too pleased with what the olympic TKD has turned out to be (just kicks). Grabs and punches are just as fun, in my opinion. I just starting TKD, and i'm a little bummed that my college only does the 'kick for points' matches. Luckily the teacher is an old guy who gives all the proper training, arm and leg.
iv seen some badass WTF practioners trained with them and even met there 9th dan grandmaster b4 i wouldnt want to mess wit them but its all bout the person and there training its imposible to compare.
lol im sure u dont liek whenpeople say itf is better and wtf suks why would u say this comment its 1 thing to have an opinion its another to insult another martail arts and itsgear we where the shoes becuase we dont have the bog chest guard and our kicks would hurt to much with bare foot and yes i am an itf practitioner
Yeah, I'd rather have proper protection than wear gigantic shoes. It prevents accidents like you from happening.
"fluttering your legs around like an idiot". A kick is a kick, and no matter what branch you are, we're pretty similar. So you too are "fluttering your legs around like an idiot".
@seolma not really buddy, ITF is offensive and if a WTF fighter stands there with his hands down like they do, then they'll be beaten easy by an ITF fighter, i did WTF originally and i much prefer ITF its just more practical, however i respect your decision.
Ohh, so like a Novice Black or something. I see, I didn't mean any offense by the way.
ITF, in my opinion, is definitely the better TKD practice to take up. It, like every martial arts, has it's own set of flaws, but it definitely has its values too. It's just that they have to be implemented right.
Look up guys like Zelg Galesic, Keiji Ozaki, Tomaz Barada, etc... These are the kind of guys who really know how to use the effectiveness that some schools teach.
@esmaelooo, impossible, how could you ever find the time between your intensive dance work-outs in WTF and roleplaying as a mighty keyboard warrior on the interwebz? By the way, I think my nephew is a 9 year old yellow-belt in WTF, is he in your class? Really impressive school you've got there.
are you mentally ill ?? your ridiculous sarcasim is the same of your 9 year old nephew !! hahaha now i know from where he got his stupidity , it's you, the biggest jackass on the web
and actually it seems it's you whose a keybord ninja , i don't even have uploaded videos
and say whatever you want about WTF , your opinion is SHIT and no body cares about it \
@esmaelooo teakwondo is for the fuckin easter bunny. all you do is jump around like a happy meal toy and kick eachother. ufc you fuckin bleed and get permenatly scarred. ufc they go all out and choke and beat the living shit outa eachother. and they dnt just stop the fight cuz some pussy got kicked in the face once lmfao. fuckin chink. dont start tlkin shit to us round eyes you japenese dog.
@SuperBugsbunny4 Really? You're going to bring race into this. Who the fuck do you think you are calling someone a chink. And just in case you didn't know UFC wouldn't be here if it wasn't for martial arts, including taekwon do. Sorry if your brain is only stimulated by blood shed, but not all martial arts fights main objective is to make the person bleed and knock them out cold.
@TheSearchEngines the last sentence you typed is exactly why its called "ultimate" fighting championship. and i wud rather put my life in the hands of a ufc fighter than some chink taekwondo pussy. haaha im guessing ur asian lmfao
@SuperBugsbunny4 haha and that is the reason why you don't have the brain to comprehend nor respect this type of martial arts, and the fact that you laughed your ass off at the fact that you thought I was Asian is quite sad.
BTW that person you called a chink was equally as wrong as you were, I don't understand why either of you have to bring race or any degrading term into this.
@TheSearchEngines oh well arent you the cutest little nerd ive seen. there is no comprehending needed in this argument to realize tht taekwondo is a dumbed down or (pussy) version of UFC. and yes i do know some UFC fighters use taekwondo. so stfu, get at my level dip shit. lol
@SuperBugsbunny4 Question. Why are you even watching this video if you don't like taekwon do. Are you trying to make yourself mad by watching us "pussy's" fight?
@TheSearchEngines actually this guy i know is started UFC training and his mom said why dnt you just do taekwondo and he told me to look it up on youtube so he cud show me how gay it was compared to UFC.
its too bad his 'mom' didn't advise you not to skip school, in which case you might have a slight chance of learning correct spelling and grammar as well as tolerance for different races and cultures...
oh well, you might still end up in the school for kids who can't read good and wanna learn to do other things good too.
@Cloven0Angel first, why wud "his" mom tell me to do that??? lol
second, for the billionth time. if ur gonna argue about something atleast make it interesting. hahah i dnt care if i spell bad. if you cant think of something other than grammer than ur fucking stupid.
and third....im in school as we speak dumb fuck......
@esmaelooo lol hahah if you think uve won just cuz you made a laughing face then..... i dnt even know where to begin. first you need to take arguing classes cuz your reply gave me knoe emotion i just read it and was like umm ok. i hate arguing with faggots tht are like uh duhhh :D go cry uh duhh:D oops looks like i win cuz i made a face and you didnt lol. stfu
schools are hard to come by. And even then, they might not be as watered down as the general WTF schools are. It's just the way it is due to marketing. Teaching stuff like forms and "cardio" is what will attract women and children, and by appealing to a broad audience, they make more money.
Still, ITF is closer to TKD's roots as a "self defense" Martial Art than WTF is (which I think your friend probably does), as WTF is more a "sport" than an actual "self defense" teaching now.
LOL you made me laught so hard I pissed my pants.Think before saying crap: ATF is a extremly modified version of TKD, so much that it's not even recognized as a true TKD fighting style.
Have you ever heard of a WTF dojo or facility that teaches 21+ year-old beginners. I'm 28 and am in very good shape with great athletic ability, and WTF Taekwondo is so cool and interesting to me. I want to get started in it.
I've sparred a Tae kwon Do Friend of mine... I find that theres waaaay too much pussy footing around ... so much energy and effort is wasted bouncing on the spot and avoiding attacks...so back then having a Muay Thai Discipline... well lets just say it didn't end well when he tried to do a fancy arial kick at my head when my reverse round house caught his face in mid air.... lol
In this vid, there's maybe only one "aerial" kick attempted, & it was Nam's "360 Roundhouse", which essentially a pivot & roundhouse - nothing tooo fancy.
That's just it. If you're gonna do TKD, you have to know how to separate what's practical from the fancy bullshit meant for performances and show.
Also, you don't usually bounce around excessively, it's just footwork. It's done the same way in boxing.
people shouldnt talk trash about other martial arts especially when they know nothing about it. every martial art has its specialty. and its not the martial art the u know which makes warriors the best. it is the warrior him self or her self which defines that.
well you sick ass mo fo ITF WTF KTA WHATEVER, COMPETITIONS ARE UNREAL IN THESE FEDERATIONS BUT all of them teaches the same techniques of gen.choi hong hi the father of the game . got that biiaatch
i dont know if u train in tae kwon do but i do and the bouncing is not excessive waist of energy its so they can trick there foe and switch stances quickly. And this is ITF tournament so they arent aloud hands.
How come nobody ever punches in these tournaments. I know hand techniques are taught in taekwondo, but in tournaments all I ever see is guys kicking and bouncing around excessively wasting energy. When I was a kid, I learned taekwondo, but it was nothing at all like this. We learned lots of low and medium kicks (high ones were taught but not emphasized), elbows, punches, knifehands, things you can use on the street. If you try to fight this way on the street, you're dead.
So what's the point? I mean when a martial arts competition is so unlike a real fight with so many restrictions, what's the point? Of course in any kind of sport, you must have some rules like groin attacks for example. But only being able to strike the torso seems a bit ridiculous.
First of all, in WTF competitions (which suck), kicks to the head ARE allowed. You're even awarded an additional point for it.
In ITF, both kicks and punches to the head are allowed.
Did you guys even watch the video? Both were exchanged to the face at some point. It's just done very little because in an art where kicking is so emphasized, people are tentative to get inside. That, and a lot of the strikes are intended for targets like the neck, etc...
That's exactly what I was thinking. There were numerous times when these guys would of been straight punched in the face by brawlers. But I think punching is sometimes counted as pushing & elbows takes points off and kicks score high, so they keep kicking.
2 different federations that head TKD.
WTF style rules are the ones seen on the Olympics, with gear and such.
ITF is full contact similar to Karate Kumite but different point system.

SuperBlippo 1 month ago
@Easyandy100 There is no rule or law to keep your hands down. So why? TKD sport is a game, a game of tag. And each player must defend and attack to score and obstruct a scoring area. This video and many others inhibits the defence aspect of ITF TKD sport or SD. It might be the way things are now, but sparring in ITF TKD wasn't like that 20 years ago, it's closer to WTF(Olympic style TKD) which is sad. Tapilatu and Barada prove that ITF TKD is not just a kicking sport they are champs
SuperBlippo 1 month ago
@SuperBlippo OK I checked out Tapilatu and one thing that stands out, as I have mentioned before, it's a different sport. He is a TKD proponent but he fights in full contact so guard and stance are different to semi contact point scoring, as seen in the clip above, where punches are low scoring and emphasis is on kicking. Also the fight I saw Tapilatu in he lost by KO with a left leg turning kick to his head; he should have kept his guard up.
Easyandy100 1 month ago

I'm only student black belt and these guys are obviously professional but I know that you always keep your hands up, close to your ribs and NEVER turn your back on an opponent while in a match even if you did get a point or it's over.
leprechaunGIT 2 months ago
@leprechaunGIT you are a genius, You are dead right, keep those hands up, the way to fight is not like the guys in the video, whoever your instructor is they know the concept of defense, whether Sport or SD. And make sure you pass it on to your students. These clowns with their hands down are just asking for it.

The second opponent (wearing the white gloves), is Hwang Su Il. This is the Artist who was used for all the motion capture work for Hwaorang from the Tekken series.
You can almost recognise him from his gestures if you pay close attention!!!

ITF is actually relevant in mma or K-1 while WTF isn't...
thefreed 1 year ago 5
@thefreed WTF-ITF, the same thing. They are both Taekwondo. Its not like at a WTF club you are simply not taught how to advantageously fight with other body parts and strike with the head, punch well, elbow, knee, shin and the back of the foot. Its not used in "Olympic" sparring as it is dirty tactics. Injuries are not a pleasant thing, and should never be severely experienced.

@Alicia6387, ITF, in terms of Taekwon-Do, stands for "International TaeKwon-Do Federation". WTF, meanwhile, stands for "World TaeKwon-Do Federation".
Haha, I know, both names imply the same thing, but the difference is in their origins, system, and teachings.

Lets face it.
In most situations Muay Thai has great coverage.
But Muay Thai was made to counter that

schools are hard to come by.

HomasterX 2 years ago
No offense, but your friend is kind of a moron.
What kind of TKD did he do?

chromesn1per 2 years ago
How come nobody ever punches in these tournaments. I know hand techniques are taught in taekwondo, but in tournaments all I ever see is guys kicking and bouncing around excessively wasting energy. When I was a kid, I learned taekwondo, but it was nothing at all like this. We learned lots of low and medium kicks (high ones were taught but not emphasized), elbows, punches, knifehands, things you can use on the street. If you try to fight this way on the street, you're dead.
hulkout666 2 years ago
in itf and wtf federation tournaments punches, and kicks to anywhere but the upper torso, are banned.
86kaizer 2 years ago
So what's the point? I mean when a martial arts competition is so unlike a real fight with so many restrictions, what's the point? Of course in any kind of sport, you must have some rules like groin attacks for example. But only being able to strike the torso seems a bit ridiculous.
hulkout666 2 years ago
Uh, that's wrong.
TakeshiMomoshiro 2 years ago
Also, hand attacks aren't done as much because points are less for strike. So kicking is favorable.
TakeshiMomoshiro 2 years ago
That's exactly what I was thinking. There were numerous times when these guys would of been straight punched in the face by brawlers. But I think punching is sometimes counted as pushing & elbows takes points off and kicks score high, so they keep kicking.
