@YouJustGotPinkyfied No, but the majority of these bands has. Down was formed in the mid 90s, when Pantera was in its lull phase, and Phil and Rex wanted to do a sludge/stoner side project. All of these bands have known each other since they dawned on the scene, and have had cameos on the cds and shows of ther own respective bands. Sorry if it sounded like i put Down a bit older than they really are.

@metallikat123 You got most of that right other than the fact that Rex brown didn't join Down until 2002 for the second Down album "Down II: A Bustle in your Hedgerow". The original bassist was Todd Strange, the then Crowbar bassist. So it wasn't Phil and Rex who formed Down. It was all the members equally who have been friends for a long time and wanted to have a go at making their interpretation of Black Sabbath style music.

Guys.... Sludge has been around since the late 80s. It started with bands like Soilent Green, Down, Crowbar, COC, EYEHATEGOD, and the like, as they were doing the opposite of what all the other bands were doing, i.e., shredgasms and fret play. The music is low, slow, and heavy as fucking God's balls. It a mindset music, like blues and true country. It has to come from what drives you. and yes, Down is formed from Pantera singer and bassist, but they were on for the whole sludgefest.

I agree to an extent on the whole subgenre thing, but I think a few aren't bad. Gives me an idea of what I'm getting into. For example, if you told me to listen to Crowbar and just said they were metal, I wouldn't know if they were in the same vain as Sabbath, Napalm Death, Maiden, Deicide, Pantera, etc. I don't know if I hate the idea of the whole "sludge" subgenre thing cuz that means low and slow. At least it means something, unlike all the "-core" names. Those are the subgenre
