  • Lets put cash into science and not war.

  • I always like to remind myself, when seeing the clips of the celebrating people in these videos, "These are mere apes. Look at them! Jumping around, slapping each other on the back, waving their arms around like primitive animals!"

Brings a smile to my face. : )

  • fucking onions

  • I want to high five the shit outta that guy on the right at 1:17

  • "...no boundaries can be set to rational hope" amazing...

  • @pasturesmusic He was actually quoting Bertrand Russel there... the video doesn't make that very clear.

  • 1:06 where is that footage from?

  • @reeft its the columbia. part of a BBC show called "last flight of columbia"

  • @snipeefox Thank you, I already found it in the recommended links. Tragic - but never forgotten. True heroes.

  • how did you get all those subtites?

  • This is one very "vivacious" video. =p

  • "Ad Astra Per Aspera" (To the stars through difficulites) Could not ask for a better state motto.

  • @raibcmusic sagan had this way of talking that was almost hypnotic ..a true legend ..

  • Your video is a favorite on Kiribati

  • i wish i could understand some of the things he's saying but im just not intelligent enough

  • @TheEIements Out of everything he basically says this... the world that we live in is not just this planet... it is what's inside of us and outside of us, and that maybe one day we will realize this at the greatest scale possible so that we can one day discover what is within the unknown... to maybe make sense of our existence.

  • @TheEIements in this clip, he's pretty much saying that over the course of history, it is impossible to predict and prepare for everything that is going to happen. because of this, there are many different "paths" for life to proceed upon. he then goes on to say that humanity could very well be much more advanced by now, if the paths had been different. he then says, "and, what may one day be," implying that humanity could still reach our potential as a species. i think.

  • Why is this suddenly unavailable on mobile phones? I watched it on the same phone not one week ago.

  • @snaekz Too much charisma for a simple smartphone :p

  • NASA should just pay this guy to keep making these videos until they get thier shit together. And when there is a president that will finally put money into the program, EVERYONEwould be dying to jump aboard.

  • Who the fuck would dislike this? I think YouTube adds a small number of dislikes after a point just to be fair.

  • @SgtOReilly Christians.

  • 1:34

Sri Lanka, the best island on the planet!

  • fantastic

  • Scientists are the only kind of people that make sense to me.

  • amazing series to watch , very emotional ,

WHO NEEDS COCAINE wen u CAN WATCH THIS >>>

    SO TRIPPIN>>>>>

  • Its haunting to see the joyous smiles of men who have made a lasting and universal achievement. All too rare a sight in our modern world....

  • I want to be an astronaut and this inspires me so much.

  • @5daysnotice JUST DO IT

  • @Freeindividua2 I have a theory for this, let's say you see 2 far away objects that seem near to each other. Like this: *__*. As you get close you'll notice the spacing between each other seems bigger: *___*, and bigger as you get closer: *______*. That's my theory of why there are no stars visible, they probably are visible they're just too far from each other for the camera to capture a panorama full of stars. Of course I could be wrong and there could be another explanation for that.

  • @Psycho1922 If by that you mean they are so far away, and travelling so much faster away that their light will never us, then yes

  • FUCKING MANLY TEARS WERE SHED!

  • Very poweful and moving videos.

  • @Freeindividua2 A camera is not an eye. Learn some photography.

  • BS

  • It just make me sad that NASA budget is getting hacked...and some people believe that this agency should be dismantled and be given to the pvt. corporations.

  • under the 2-5 mins of this series, i learn more than in a whole year's of school.

    Sagan is a true inspirator!

  • My thanks to damewse for uploading these wonderful videos. They make me feel a bit sad but also inspire me to hope and dream for a better world...

  • @sheadong It's for the reason we know the world does not appreciate what we have amongst us. It's sad , and I hope we get past it. We hope for a better tomorrow... Yet our world today has a hard time working towards it.:(

  • I very nearly cried watching all 7 of theses for the first time.

  • @daemonowner It's a different kind of cry isn't it? For something like... like he says, driven by a feeling they can hardly articulate.

  • Gotta love Carl. Although he despised a lot of things humans had done, he still believed in them, just not all of them, as long as there are a selected few, then that was enough for Carl, and it should be enough for you too.

  • Seriously dude, these vids are unreal in inspirational value.

  • 1:44 Ilan Ramon - you'll always be in our hearts!!

may they all rest in peace.

  • My phone started ringing while watching this, I ripped the telephone cord out of the reciever. NO ONE GETS BETWEEN ME AND MY SAGAN!

  • 1:41 - second to the left in the back is my personal hero, Lt. Col Ilan Ramon, the first and thusfar only Israeli astronaut.

  • @Ambious On the scale in which Sagan speaks, national boundaries are irrelevant. The concept of nationality is divisive and distracting from the human pursuit of purpose, for it should matter not whether a person is Israeli.

  • @FluffyBunniesOnFire Much agreed, but considering I come from a place that has a really strong religious movement that pretty much controls the country and depresses anything remotely related to science, a man who goes against all odds and against all opposition and ventures into space - to do science, a man I share some history with, an identity... He is my hero not because he was Israeli, but in addition to that.

  • @Ambious I was under the impression that Israel was a leader in scientific advancement, despite its religious air.

  • @FluffyBunniesOnFire It used to be, but it's slowly going downhill. Remember the premise of 'Idiocracy'? Smart people reproduce about 10 times slower than dumb religious fanatics, and that's a fact. It's a shame, really. Some of the greatest Jewish historical figures were scientists, it's only the newer ones that are so anti-science. They know what people of all religions have known forever - keep the people dumb, and they'll be more likely to turn to religion.

  • @FluffyBunniesOnFire used to be, I believe there were some pretty smart guys that worked with hawking and/or solved a paradox he discovered. But that was a decade ago.

  • @FluffyBunniesOnFire Your impression is wrong

  • @hatestomatoes. Now I'm unsure whether you are religious or not.

  • THOSE. FUCKING. ONIONS.

  • Its truley amazing how well these videos are put togather. i am amazed, thank you Carl sagan! these videos have brought so much to my attention that i tend to overlook. <3

  • everyone wants to buy commercial time i know a way we can my uncle works with the channel producer for cnn so if we get enough likes on the facebook page universal page we can make a difference!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVELOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVELOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVELOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • where can i watch the original footage of those guys at 1:27

  • @ThomasCKFuller I have been looking for it too, anyone have an idea?

  • @DrMMHMD I know it's footage of it crashing, I just wondered if it had been flipped horizontally (not vertically - I didn't think it was footage of a launch or something) to create a juxtaposition with the arrow of the NASA flag.

  • Why did i decide to watch this at work?!

    Goddammit

  • Carl Sagan has the effect of making me want to tear up whenever I come to his clips, but this one video produced more tears from me than every other video I've ever seen combined. No shame in the least.

  • i have to admit as well, i cried, got the chills and goosebumps... man.

  • All these videos are brilliant, but (and I may be wrong here), was the Columbia footage at the end flipped horizontally? That footage is etched on our memories so deeply, it jarred me a little to note that it was tampered with. I'm not complaining exactly, just thought it was worth noting, as your editing in all other respects has been spot on.

  • Word. Please keep making these. The world needs more of them..

  • I cried

  • I checked this out a work and it suddenly got really, really dusty around my desk if you know what I'm saying. I was hoping no one would walk by and see the tears in my eyes. Absolutely incredible. We need to get into space.

  • CARL SAGAN is the wise man of all time.

    Carl lives on.

HE IS AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL OF US.

  • I nearly broke down at the end with the shot of the Columbia crew followed by the bits falling in the sky.

  • I got chills and tears from listening/watching this. Absolutely amazing.

  • "...no boundaries can be set to rational hope. "

    Carl

  • Excellent!

  • If I could choose to speak with and get to know one person who ever existed. No doubt in my mind that I would choose Carl every time.

  • Seriously beautiful video

  • This is amazing. My goal in life is to feel what those people at 1:27 feel.

  • @Sativa1337 cough cough (not happening) cause of nasa

  • @Sativa1337 I'd say my dream job would be to work for NASA, but I don't think they let Christians in any of the scientific communities anymore. For some reason people don't think a person can think rationally, be intelligent, and still believe there is a God. (Sorry I'm still a little mad about his last episode).

  • @redoutlander they're biased towards your wishful thinking, and why wouldn't they be.

  • @Bubbins909 an intelligent mind shouldn't accuse without solid evidence. Science is rooted in observation and proof. Christianity resides in faith of a loving God who accepts us even with our faults (I’m sure you can name a lot of Christians who have faults!).

The truth is that “wishful thinking”, or faith, is what allows any human to risk great disaster in exchange for monumental reward. We wouldn’t have made it to the moon on observation and proof alone. Faith and action got us there!

  • @redoutlander Faith is not wishful thinking. Faith is believing in fairy tales because you were told to. Wishful thinking is "Wouldn't this be nice?" Yes, you might be compartmentalized so severely that you can be a rational person and a theist, but irrational beliefs belie a willingness to be intellectually lazy and that sort of thing doesn't have a place in scientific research.

  • @redoutlander I'll reserve my atheist statements for now, but I just wanna say that no, christians are not opressed at NASA, nor are they anywhere in the united states. There are plenty of christian astronauts and engineers working their now. And in the past too. Gene Kranz, a flight director of the golden days (mercury, gemini, apollo) whom i have great respect for, was catholic. You can get a job at nasa, christian, atheist or otherwise.

  • @Drensworth Thank you. I was angry about narrow thinking and didn't check my facts. I appreciate you pointing out my error. When people aren't willing weigh their ideas against conflicting evidence they are not looking for the truth, they are looking to be "right”. On a side note: NPR’s "Talk of the Nation" had a heated debate yesterday over opposing Christian scientific beliefs.

  • I have this featured on my channel! I shared it with my friends & family, truly a great video.

  • This always makes me feel so joyful and sad at the same time.

  • I cried. I'm not an emotional guy but the images pared with Carl was so perfect. And I think it was the happiness of the NASA command workers freaking out that got me

  • @reid300 That NASA working crying in happiness, I know. Holy.

  • @chriscook25 Terrible English aside, that happiness is felt by a strong sense of accomplishment, not some religious illusion.

  • @reid300 That is exactly what got me as well, and I'm not an emotional guy either. It's just something too powerful.

  • @reid300 I cried as well. Not an easy thing to get me to do. These videos are profound.

  • Even in the face of adversity from disaster we, mankind, have persevered for the good of humanity - motivated by the knowledge that what our discoveries will benefit us, our message will inspire the next generation to succeed and hopefully, one day, put all our earthly squabbles into perspective and lay them to rest. It is our nature to explore and I thank those who have dedicated their lives to this, and I too hope to be a part of it - however small.

  • This is beautiful.

  • Only problem with this series is... Eventually, you're going to run out of quotes.

  • ZOMGGGGGGGGGG Number 4!

  • More videos please...I cry like a baby every time I watch this series and I keep coming back. The most profound videos on youtube and possibly ever made.

  • epic

  • good lord how do you make these videos play that harp on the inside so powerfully?.. his words alone are enough to mistify, my eyes.. but the piano and vocals?... why does it speak... so loudly..and quietly..at the same time... why is it so... clean... and real... and honest... damn it Dr Carl Sagan, we could really use you right about now :( But I wont hope and do nothing, I will try as well, I promise you and the rest of you too. My fellow human beings.

  • what is that location at :38, is that africa?

  • this is beauty. this is poetry. this is science. this is philosophy. And this is truth.

  • For every dislike of this video, every public declaration of disapproval to this art, a small slider at the base of the video goes from the green to red. This red represents all the rivers and blood, spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters, of a fraction of a dot.

  • This has got to be one of the most beautiful and inspiring clips I have ever watched. I can not say exactly how this clip (and other Sagan Series clips) makes me feel, because there are no words to describe it. If we all just put away the materialistic constructs of society and let go of all the barriers and differences, we would achieve things so great that today we wouldn't even be able to imagine in our wildest dreams!

  • What is it specifically that they are celebrating at 1:28?

  • @avenger15

    The KFC Double Down.

  • @avenger15 the Mars rover landing of Spirit or Opportunity (don't remember which)

  • Simple and Fantastic.

  • 27 899 viewv and only 1041 likes...

    WTF ?

  • Our dream is to dance among the stars, my garden is humanities knowledge bequeathed to wisdom is held in destiny's palm.

  • 4 people are a afraid of what may one day be

  • The video at 1:32 of the Space Shuttle in orbit is being played backward, it is moving east to west.

  • Another amazing video.

  • 4 people have no soul

  • God...he was so beautiful.

  • One of your best yet (though #1 is still my favorite) - this was extremely powerful and definitely made me tear up. Beautiful work. Great choice of music too - gotta love Sufjan. Perfect. Thanks.

  • i love it. really i do. i hope you never stop making these and I hope you understand just what impact you have on people by making these videos.

  • This is what the very first scene of "Enterprise" should have been.

  • [weeps quietly at his desk]

  • This is about an hour and a bit too short :(

another excellent video in an excellent series.

  • Oh man, these videos always give me goosebumps. I really enjoy what you're doing with these videos. Keep up the great work! :)

  • i think 4 people accidentally clicked the thumbs down instead of the thumbs up

  • Like x10^20

  • @eagleapex Like * 6.02 * 10^23

  • my nigga

  • you don't own space nase-a owns space

  • @buchan23 Dammit ricky

  • Beautiful as always.

  • So they stole the RAF's moto, changing to a different synonym does not a different moto make.

  • @kahnindustries

No one stole any motto. NASA's motto is "For the benefit of all." Ad Astra per Aspera it is a common Latin phrase.

  • @2007ASpaceOdyssey Actually, Ad Astra per Aspera is the official motto of the state of Kansas. But as the state that discovered the planet pluto, I think we too feel the passion of Carl Sagan at the infinite glorious beyond.

  • Beautiful.

  • Immensely powerfully inspiring! THANK YOU DAMEWSE, THANK YOU CARL SAGAN

  • I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite series on Earth

  • @bunnyhallow I'm actually playing Mass Effect 2 at the moment and he just said that in-game!

  • Is there anything more disappointing in the fact that our generations have given up on the strive to go further more into the void?

  • @theycallmenavid Yes: The fact that they're more worried about killing each other over petty differences.

  • I'm tired of watching these tear-inducing ads. I wish I could /do/ something with this. I would literally give my left hand to go into space.

  • @punchingjudy I'm pretty sure that you'd need your left hand to remain task-effective in space. I understand your sentiment, though.

  • I always get choked up when I see the Columbia crew. RIP guys

  • How do you get such high quality footage? They always look like HD

  • dude SUCH a good edit! perfect!

only thing I wish is for the end graphics to be a bit better..but hey thats just nitpicking!! So moving and touching, you are doing good for humanity :)

  • 1:22 was my favorite part, such a sense of accomplishment

  • Please keep on making these videos.

  • Another masterpiece.

  • Carl Sagan, I wonder where we would be if everyone knew about you, and if everyone shared your love of science and the universe.

  • I found that incredibly moving.

  • 1:36 where in the world is this?? It's not Madagascar...

  • @forddj418 Sri Lanka

  • @forddj418 India ;)

  • @forddj418 Sri Lanka i think, judging by shape, although im not 100%

  • Carl Sagan...FUCK YEAH!!

  • Still loving this series. I just wish that they were slightly longer :).

  • Why isn't NASA picking up on this? Where is their effort to spark the interest of Space Exploration for not just a single nation, but the whole world?

  • Great series.

  • Interesting note: Carl was not a fan of the space shuttle program.

  • @SaganAppreciationSoc [Citation needed]

  • @Svordin

A quick search online will show many comments by Carl about how putting people into low orbit to study newts and tomatoes in low-G was not exploring space. He also said unmanned probes would have been cheaper.
