You won't kill the plant. Hold off on pruning the rose until mid-Feb (unless it is really tall). You will look on the stem for a ridge. That ridge is where the new cane will form (it is also where the leaves are). Look for a part of the ridge that is facing outward. You will want to prune just above that ridge. You will have to use a lopper or a pruning saw. Larger stems need a larger cutting tool. Good Luck.

thanks a lot for your help. If i prune before seeing any buds on the rose. will i kill it ?. or will new buds come out eventually
