....i've known Mr. Norton since i was 10 back in 1970...absolutely no doubt he is a gifted athlete with genetically superior fast twitch muscle fibre who has worked incredibly hard to realise his physical potential and capitalise on opportunity given and made.Technically he is superb at mimicing what most have been indoctrinated to accept as the correct body language of karate....but the man is and always has been an alpha-male ego-maniac....karate expert? 1 of top 10 in world. Martial artist?

spadaydaga, the reason this reminds you of Tadashi Yamashita's Shorin ryu system is that Richard Norton learn't these moves from Tadashi Yamashita, back in the 70's.
Personally I think he looks a lot better with the beard, but he's got some slick skills on him and impressive speed, good to see he can back up his movie martial arts with real ability.
To this day, his sword disarm with the Sai in The Octogan with Chuck Norris is one of the most amazing and mysterious things I have ever seen...I've tried slowing it down frame by frame and searched everwhere for interviews to see if he ever explained it...
He's top notch in my book. Very well rounded guy.
Decent Video. He is pretty fast. But I don't consider this advanced. This is common basic training and movement for lower Kenpo/Kempo Belts. I can only comment for this clip but the training is unrealistic. Maybe more realism in the whole video. Good for basic training but not for realistic self defense.
It seems that Mr. Norton has taken the suikendo complexs he learned from Master Tadashi Yamashita and turned them into dvd's without giving full and complete credit to Master Yamashita. I wonder if he had permission to do so?
Ditto all of yours above Jeremy. BUY THE DVD all you out there! I received my copy yesterday and it hasn't been off my TV since! Do yourselves a favour! Simply the best martial arts instructional DVD out there.
Although I was also the director of photography on this project and also produced these DVDs I can say without a doubt there is a great benefit in learning these complex drills. You should buy them...
But yes... slapping the guy in the face is still kinda funny! haha....
Richard is 57, he is also a master in Muay Thai, a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jistu, a master in many traditional weapons systems, and also a very formidable mixed martial artist.
I'm 32 and have been training since I was 8 years of age, the last 12 years in BJJ and MMA, and Richard makes me look slow (and I'm fast).
It would take a black belt or higher to appreciate what is actually being practiced in the drill, although a beginner would still get great benefit as they would be laying the foundation for training their body to move in a particular way.
Bryson has hit the nail on the head. The whole point of the complexes is not to use the drill as a stand alone technique, but as a method of practicing some fundamental mechanics. Yes, the series is called BlackBelt complexes for a reason...
The slapping the guy is about initial speed and reaction time in the context of pre-fight setups. Richards point was that if you position yourself, by the time your opponent realises you are going to move it's probably too late.
PS Richard is pushing 60 years of age (sorry Richard; maybe 57...? ;-). And the clips in the dvd are quite recent, so this is how he looks NOW; this is how fast he is NOW. Take a look at some of the 'masters' of similar vintage...
The drills go on from there into power development etc. Don't take it out of context. Anyone who doesn't think Richard can demonstrate these techniques against a fully resisting opponent obviously hasn't crossed hands with him. He is as real as it gets... (msg ends)
Lastly, the 'hit you while you hold your arm out' is no more unrealistic than punching a bag... The sequence isn't a fighting technique against one opponent, but a mnemonic exercise to practice the essence of a range of techniques. The guy is just there as a target, like a wooden dummy or a punching bag. (more to follow)
2. he hardly 'slapped the crap' out of the guy, who was actually chuckling himself after the 'slapping'! I have been an uke for Shihan Norton in the past and I can assure you, that if he HIT you (not the love tap you see on the clip), you'd stay HIT. The lack of the guys ability to block the slap merely indicates the speed of the attack (there is a bit more to this demo, btw, in relation to speed, power and accuracy). (more to follow)
Hi iJITSU, I hear what you are saying, but allow me to retort... 1. Richard IS a great guy and one of the best martial artists in the world, without a doubt. (more to follow)
I've read that Norton is a great guy, but slapping the crap out of someone who is allowing you to demo technique is BS. And that "hit you 5 times while you hold your arm extended after a punch" isn't realistic.
A must-see video series from my friend and Sempai, the incomparable Richard Norton. Do yourselves a favour; buy the DVD!!! Thanks for adding this one Jeremy; it's hard to keep in touch with what's happening at home from way over here! Cheers, Bryson Keenan (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Good point. Most karate black belts over 40 that I personally know are obese, out of shape, and way too slow to use their art effectively.
Looks like Mr. Norton is the real deal. There were some nice set-ups to arm locks in that video.
