is that just one of those "water current maker fan thingys" in the moving bed section.....or just movment cused but the pump, pumping water back into the tank?
OSM after watching the filter i was expecting a swimming poll size fish tank will 1000 s of fish...!!! ;) i like it i think u will not need a water change in thanks whole life...
what other media can be used for the moving bed filter (the bottled version) ive heard straw works but people say they take like ayear to get colonized and stay flloating without moving..
wow that is a bad ass filteration system u have must have been a pain in the ass to make im making my own for my 1000 gallon system any advice from any 1 on what to start with i got two onehundred gallon acrylic tanks and two sixty acrylic tanks any info is apperciated
Beat that filter dude put some plants and small vertebrates in there. Some mixed stone gravel. Nice filter it doesn't look like you did much with the tank tho yet. Nice healthy fish though.
I have been experimenting with all kinds of food safe plastics water and pop bottle caps work great I wash them take the plastic seal out then drill a 3/8 hole in the top.
While watching TV I use my dremel and scuff them up for more surface area and little places for the bacteria to cling to.
Next time I’m going to scuff them by putting them in a cement mixer with some small scrap metal pieces.
I like the Idea of using potential litter to clean water.
We tested out a tank that had this type of filter that was used to clean water from a monitor lizard tank and it failed to do anything. The floating and roiling bio-balls dont seem to provide any additional filtration at all.
@slippy441 It takes up to about 6 weeks or so for nitrifying bacteria to grow onto the moving filter medias. And remember this is a biological filter only, meaning it will only convert Ammonia and Nitrites into far less toxic NitrAtes. This does no Mechanical filtration whatsoever, so it will not remove debris, particles, or yellow water. what this does can not be seen visually except for removing some cloudiness in the water due to waste pollutants.
@GroinStabbingPro Oh ok I see, so we just didnt let it run long enough. Thanks guys! Has anyone tried rock-wool cubes for mechanical / biological filtration? Looks like a primo media.
A bit of overkill if you ask me, there will only be as much bacteria as there is ammonia to feed it, and those fish wont be creating the amount of ammonia to feed enough bacteria to colonise that lot. Maybe this is filtering more than just this tank!
This is a great filter presumably you built it yourself nice design. The fish you keep must have pristine conditions. As usual loads of negative comments from morons who themselves have no video clips to offer. Probably because they keep a dull community tank with guppies and other easy to keep fish.
is this taken in the phillipines lol.. i cant hear someone being taught skool stuff =D
Very nice sump and filter! First tiem seeing this kind of filter.. Interesting.. very noisy though.. i wonder even if the media does hit the surface and get air... most of the time itzsub merged.. unlike a trickle.. i wonder if itz as effective as a trickle... but hey u still got those logn tube things in the front which im guesing is another bio part of ur sump =D
Is the washing machine effect not washing the bacteria off of the bio media? Making it hard for it to stick than a still water trickle. Let me know as i am planning a new sump for a nano tank and could use your method if it is better i will have live rock , sponge and bio balls in 3 compartments and a bag of phosphate remover in the end. Complete novice so any help would be greatful!
The "washing machine effect" is called moving bed filtration there's a youtube video that shows the technology behind it as developed by Kaldon (now AnoxKaldon)
bio balls provide surface area for beneficial bacteria to live on and the bacteria takeout harmful pollutants in the aquarium thus u have better water quality
See, what GlobalWarmings said is what you would read on the box of the bioballs, The bioballs are more of a cheap way to filter freshwater tanks a little, bioballs tend to hold onto a lot of nitrates in saltwater, therefore should not be used and LR should be used in place because there is usually more surface area for bacteria and you also could through some macros with it and you'll have a nice farm of nitrate eating friends :[)
No, I said the LR has more surface area, and helps cycle out nitrates unlike bioballs which hold them, but of course since there isn't really a good form of LR for nitrate help in freshwater, Bioballs would help. But I recommend the use of LR and Macro's for saltwater, they easily out weigh Bioballs and also help Copepods and Amphipods to thrice in a refugium.
bio balls catch the "good bacteria" in the water, and the bacteria hides in the openings, it will change the water quality by making so you tank will always have a good supply of good bacteria, and if you have water changes, it will restore those bacteria very quickly
is that just one of those "water current maker fan thingys" in the moving bed section.....or just movment cused but the pump, pumping water back into the tank?

@slippy441 you've not left it long enough to build up a significant biological culture. You won't see any results until this is done.

Tetragagaca 2 years ago
its better to overfilter than underfilter
BSnyd84 2 years ago 37
@BSnyd84 Not that simple... When you over filter you could get problems also...
Like produce to much nitrate from stuff broken down, which becomes an algae bloom!
Or for instant, filter so much, you filter all your furtaliser out...Leaving nothing for your plants...
Depening all also, on what the goal is...
ikelleners 1 year ago
@ikelleners you can only produce as much nitrate as your ammonia / nitrite will allow , you dont just "make" nitrate
