@saiyanpunkgirl18 Look for videos with the name plena puertorriquena o plena libre, those are the best to show real plena, some more traditional, some with a modern twist(plena libre) =)
@saiyanpunkgirl18 Try finding plena video here in youtube and compare it to bomba...it's easier than any explaining I could do 'cause I'm not a musical expert, but I think you can draw your own comparisons. Let me know how you like them! =)
@saiyanpunkgirl18 By more "black", I mean less Spanish influence in the rhythm and instruments than plena could have. The bomba drums, called "barriles", are native of Puerto Rico, made from old barrels in an artisan process. Bomba has tipically three major instruments, primo (first barril), seguidor (second, or follower), cuás(lighter percussion) and ocasionally, a single maraca. =)
@saiyanpunkgirl18 Actually, Bomba, is the one where the dancer marks the rhythm and the drum seguidor ("follower") follows the dancer, among other characteristics and it's the more "black" of the two, also the oldest. Plena it's more "mulatto" in its sound and dance. The rhythm is led by the "pandero", and its lyrics are full of social commentary, although many bomba songs are also accounts of factual events, like relationships and outstanding events. =)
@saiyanpunkgirl18 Bomba is what you just saw. Plena is a type of african dance in which the dancers and the drummer, known as the "plenero" have a battle using the rhythm of the drum to communicate. The drummer beats his drum and the dancer keeps up with his dancing. It's really awesome to watch because the very skilled dancers give the plenero a very hard time to keep up and likewise the plenero gives the dancers a hard time by giving them a difficult beat to dance to.

Gracias por el video. I hope we never loose this dance/traditions. Maybe the new young artist should bring it to the foreground.
