I was 12 and growing up in Indiana . It was an unbelievable situation with drifts as high as houses. After the first day they proceeded to cancel school for a week. We were ecstatic! We finally were off for a week and a couple days. The other thing that sticks in my mind is immediately after the storm the temperatures plummeted and were blistering cold, below zero.
My mom was one of those stranded motorists on 128 and my dad left his car at the Riverside T stop in Newton and couldn't find it when he left work early.
I was 23 living in Middleboro Ma....no lights...no phones...no deliveries...no cars allowed on the roads...nothing but snow...it snowed for 32 hours straight...
winds over 75 mph....the National Guard would pick you up at a designated area and take you to the store....so you could buy what they had left...it was an amazing thing to live through...the one good thing to come out of it???...people helped each other...people looked out for each other....
I was 22. living in a rooming house in the back bay . working at the new Marriott Copley. The city was at a complete standstill. No hone or any power for days. Everyone in town... was for the first time in Boston History , friendly ! My buddies an I went to Sporter's bar on Cambridge street where they lit the bar with candles and someone backed up a van to one of the two front doors and played a 8 track. we all drank for free .. and danced the hours away !
@MasterMark123 - Sporters, was that on Beacon Hill? My brother and his partner who frequented the bar in the 80's took me there for a drink, it was interesting to say the least, but they were very friendly.
We had this blizzard because too many kids prayed for the day off.
I was 15 years old, a sophomore in high school. When we came back we had two choices...double the work or don't have school vacation. ONE guess we picked.
I remember trying to walk up the street from my house.....snow up to my waist....just impossible to walk. When the plows finally did come down the street they left a "mountain" of snow against the driveways of all the houses. Then you shoveled out your driveway...and the plows would come by again and completely cover your drive
amazing!! I lived in Smithfield, RI and we got at least 45 inches and some drifts were 22 feet tall....to the top of buildings in the commons. This video is terrific, you should make one for RI...please??
I wasn't around back then, but from what i hear part of the problem with the storm was that all the weather men had forecast flurries for that day, so people were caught completely off guard.
I was 12 years old and living in Newark Delaware. The townhouses we lived in faced eachother on courts and outside my front door there was NO snow, but at the back of the two story townhouse you could walk up the snow and onto the roof. Being 12 years old....sledding off the roof of the townhouse seemed like a great idea!! That is until you got to the next row of townhouses..lol. Excellent video of the tragedy. 5*s all the way!
I had been shot on Feb 5th and spent the rest of the week in and out of consciousness in the hospital in Worcester, Mass. I could see the snow flying sideways through my hospital window.
very well made video of a major weather event. i liked the way you put it together. i was 27 and dairy farming at the time. thanks for making this one.
Now that really portrays the storm as it was. Thank you for posting this, it reminds me so much of that day. I was only seven years old at the time but I still remember it.
I was 7 and I remember it was a really bad storm. What I remember the most is thinking NO SCHOOL YEAH! I remember we walked every where there were no buses or cabs store shelves were empty. Our moms were talking to neighbors they never spoke to before. We lived in Roxbury behind Northeastern University. All of us were in our full-body snow suits. The snow was literally waist deep in some places. We were children so my memory wasn't about how devastating it was. My memory is how much fun we had.

I was going to school in Boston at the time and didn't think the storm was that big a deal. The shoreline damage was but as for snow, give me a break. When I was a kid living in Buffalo if we got a storm like that you wouldn't even miss school the next day.
Remember how, after the Great Blizzard of '78, southern New England received no more measurable snow for the rest of the winter?
I remember how quiet the nights were with no electricity and there being few vehicles riding around after sunset....oh, and how awesome the PC Friars' basketball team was doing that year! Go PC!
YIKES! Snowed into my college dorm, with the guy I had JUST BROKEN UP WITH! All the roads were closed, so my girlfriends and I walked to the package store (drinking WAS LEGAL AT 18 then!) and I drank an entire bottle of Gallo Pink Chablis that night. OMIGAWD, I never got that drunk again, EVER, in my life. I really thought I was going to die.
I lived in Scituate at the time and remember the M.P.'S coming to my house, I was scared due to the fact I was only 7 and didn't know whta was going on!
That snow was so deep you could barely walk outside!! This was the biggest snowstorm in ALL HISTORY, one which most assume will never reapeat!!! BIGGEST SNOW STORM SINCE 1888
I was snowed in for a week out in southeastern PA... it was just one long "snow day"! I had no idea how devastating and dangerous it was, and how lucky we were to be snug with a fireplace, a root cellar, and farmers coming by to check on us.
I was in Kindergarten in N. Chelmsford, MA and we didn't have school for 1 week. My father was a district sales manager for Thom McCan shoes and was stuck down in Worcester, MA., My mom has a picture of me sitting on the ROOF of our ranch house like it was just another snow pile! Those are my memories of it!
This storm stalled at the Northeast for 2-3 days. The reason why because of a High Pressure in Southeastern Canada. The Low Pressure tried to go through, but it couldn't because the High Pressure was standing it's ground for 48-72 hours and there was a negative tilt which deepens the storms strength. The result of this gave NYC 20" of Snow, Boston- nearly 3 Feet of snow Providence, RI- 55" of Snow. This study put me one step closer to being a Meteorologist.
Really great video. I was trapped in Fields Corner till my food ran out, then my brother and I walked to work on Long Island in Boston Harbor. I'll never forget seeing thousands of people walking on the highway to Boston, sort of a preview of the day the oil runs out.
yeah there will, the earth has been warming up and cooling down long before us, and will continue long after us. Its all in the earths records...the tundra was once a lush tropical jungle, so was the south pole. This is based on fossil findings.
Great editing! And something to make us thankful when we think we have it bad NOW here in Blahston, it could be worse -- I was in 7th grade when this happened and there was no school for a week!
wow i almost forgot i lived threw it it was very bad here in concord ma i was 17 and had fun anyways now i plow snow dont want to see that again great video
I started work that afternoon with it not snowing & by the end of my 8 hour shift my car was completely snowed in for almost a week. Got a ride home with a giant snow plow. ppl were being brought to work on snowmobiles. walked with no cars through Harvard Square and along Boylston St & everyone talked to each other. Families pulled bags of groceries home on sleds & toboggans from little corner stores. Everything else shut down. Great clip! Thanks.
damn that was serious... my mom was stuck in a hospital giving birth to my sister lol
