Sorry I'm kind of new to this, or at least with Maya Dynamics. There isn't whole lot on the web in the way of creating this effect in tutorial form. Even on digital tutors.
Hey thanks that helped some. My only other concern at this point is if it's better to just create a torus emitter or create a torus object, animate it, and then set an emitter to emit from the object. There is an option (at least in Maya 2011 which I use) to create an emit or to emit from object. I'm using the ladder for this particular use. Is it better to just create a torus emitter. Hope that made sense.
@phattyartist: there are 2 things you need to keep in mind is that emitting from an object, basically it emits from the surface whereas the torus emitter emits from the entire volume of the emitter.
I am very curious how you pulled this effect off in Maya. Did you use Maya fluids or something else. I am wondering because I am a student working on a film and we need to pull something off very similar to this. We need a billowy shockwave for an explosive effect. I can find plenty of tutorials for doing explosions in Maya dynamics but I haven't been able to find anything on doing a shockwave such as this. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
@phattyartist: It has been 2 years so I don't remember much the process I did to archive this effect. But one thing I am certain about is that it was done with maya fluid.
I used a script to auto-resize the fluid container during the simulation and if you are using Maya 2011, there is a function to do that for you (lucky eh?). I created an emitter (torus) then give a negative number for the buoyancy. Then, I created a field (torus too) but change the value so that the velocity rolling inward.
@phattyartist: I also keyed the value of the the velocity so that the bigger size of the field, the velocity rolling faster and faster to make it field the shockwave coming close to the camera (not the camera I used to render this vid though. I hope you get my idea ;) Cheer.
@phattyartist Hi, you said you have found some tutorials on maya explosion, but I've spent loads of time searching for a good explosion tutorial, and I have found nothing. Can you please direct me to some of the tutorials you've found, cause I have a project that recuires some cg explosions, and I am kind of stuck!
@looponthepitch: I did say I found some? I don't remember. Anyways, you should check Gnomonworkshop website. They have tutorials about Fluid Effects. It could be helpful for you. But I really recommend you to take a look at examples from Visor in Maya and learn from that.

@silmusashi OK, really thanks! It never came to my mind to check the visor.
