You never know what Opeth can produce next time, they take turns according to their inspirations and their feelings and that's something not many bands are able to do cause it's 'risky'. Well, Opeth doesn't give a shit. They have been putting albums to their liking since the day they started. Damnation wasn't metal and they eventually went back to it. I believe it's a great album, give it more listens and it'll grow on you and you'll worship it. Respect to Opeth.
Heavy drumming?? Try listening to the drums on this album. Axenrot is giving the best drum performance any Opeth drummer has ever delivered. Playing fast and loud doen't mean playing better. In fact, it's the total opposite. You should check out the DVD and the drum part he plays on The Lines in my Hand. I don't remember the name of their first drummer (Orchid and Morningrise), but Ax's drum performance on this album is like not in the same universe...
@Fantomassexybeast I wouldn't go that far. Sure this is the best drumming Axe's ever delivered, but he doesn't have that much personal style Lopez had. Technically they're on par, and Axe has come a long way and has improved A LOT, but I still prefer Martin's style (but hey, Martin Lopez is one of my favourite drummers ever, so it's normal I prefer him :P). But you're right, Axe is a phenomenal drummer, I'm glad he's part of Opeth, and he's HEAPS better than Anders Nordin (their first drummer).
can you give a hint as what was the line-up? i'm going to see them in Portugal in november and I just can't wait to know what songs they are going to play :D
In Philly they played this song, I Feel The Dark, Slither, Pyre, Throat of Winter, Face of Melinda, Porcelain Heart, Hex Omega which was fucking fantastic, not sure exactly what else. One from Damnation I know, and probably another from Heritage. Know I'm forgetting a few but at least there is most.
seriously though this is a perfectly decent song and a perfectly decent set to play, but you cannot ignore the fact that the majority of opeths followers (the ones who are paying to see them) want to hear songs from their old albums, songs with death metal vocals and heavy drumming. If i went to this show i would be pissed of. Yes they are good songs and ok to listen to, but i love opeth for allot more than this
@TheGutwagon i think a lot of people think that they are not a metal band anymore because of this tour, and that is why so many people were so disappointed. but mike and fredrick both said that a death metal album in the future is a possibility. the whole point of this set list was to support the heritage album and play older stuff that musically "connected" with heritage. i have faith that we will see more metal from them in the future, but i love heritage, i wouldn't mind more like it.
Opeth's new album is groundbreaking.
