I have seen internet content delivery systems that required interaction in order to see the next page. Would we need teachers to ask every student in class for permission to continue? I prefer the ability to see straight lectures or reviews that will continue until I interrupt the presentation for clarification. This would allow me to digest content during other activities such as exercising.
This reminds me of the efforts to provide more ways to keep student attention, like including video game rewards.
A simple lecture, review, overview and test practice help. Adding attention retaining qualities are distracting when looking at a dictionary or during a quick lecture, review or test.
Are we caught up in the ability to create virtual worlds and forgetting what student's need? I have seen too many times where focus on environment reduces functionality.
I can understand the second life Spanish deal, but you're not going to get any real practice doing "role playing doctor"... Kids can do that on club penguin all the time. That's just an excuse to not actually teach your class real people skills.
Speaking from SL experience, it's a complete failure.
For the whole spain thing, it's great however they do not know if they are speaking with people who speak well too.
Secondly, the program (or game?) is terrible for able bodied students.
It is NOT something that's good for this world because human interaction such as body language is quite necessary when doing the check up with the doctor.
If they are going to go so far with the lecture, someone might as well set up a video feed
You don't get it, when new fundamental things of life are introduced in a new digital - video game world, it spreads like a virus into other parts of our society. Eventually everything we do in our lives will be in front of a glowing screen!
I think people in the comment section are slightly too negative to this. If universities are reporting a 30% increase in academic succes among students (see 1:59) due to this, then it's obviously not a bad idea.
@EasytoonGuy Agreed, as someone who has taken Japanese for a few years I felt it would of helped a LOT if I could of spoken with a Japanese community to see where my level was at even if that means via online game.

perhaps we should focus more on practicums and experiential learning instead of interacting through a screen...
I mean, if I want to practice Spanish, I'll befriend a native speaker in real life.

It seems.... a little too flashy. This could have been done in a far simpler way.

and just email questions
Or better yet, just have a pod cast of the lecture.
Students can then email questions or come in for questions.
