a comment to help some people im using a usb to rs232 (DB9) convertor and it only took 9600baud... sad but true. also I had to format the flash before the switch would suck up the new file..
im just learning... and somehow i messed up the ios, not the problem. i can restore it np. but what ios should i choose. i choose BASEip (ciscoswitch/3550/48/EMI)
hi there would really appreciate your help. I keep getting "xmodem : : I/O error" on my 2950 switch I followed every step you took on the clip. And I also downloaded the correct IOS from Cisco's website too.
@runderground Hi there it's me again. Just wanted to say thanks a lot for your video. I think the problem was the switch or something, because I bought a new one from ebay that had an old IOS flash and I followed your steps to the T "as they say" and thankfully now it's as good as new...... I'm going to try and fix my old and update you. Cheers...
Great video. I drove across the county with my 2960 to install it only to find then that it was corrupt. This pulled my fat out of the fire and saved me an afternoons worth of travel and headache. A+ stuff.
I can't wait to get home and re watch this video. Thank you so much. I'm struggling with the 2950 from ebay like you've mentioned. I can't wait to attempt to put the current ios from the cisco site on it, and get back on with the ccna training
Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Ran into an issue with an IOS version that killed a 3750 stack and was watching this on a cell phone from the wiring closet.
This is a PAIN In the ass. When you get a switch/router first thing u should do is back up via TFTP using copy flash tftp to the pc. Then attempt the upgrade, otherwise you may get screwed and spend a few hours doing xmodem over 9600 baud.Oh yA!
Learn CLI first. Once you do, you will not want the GUI.
Buy Cisco equipment or do some labs. You want something like a Cat 3550 or better that supports IPSERVICES (routing) and (K9) cyrptology. I get the .tar file has the SDM (GUI)you are are talking about. IOS & HTML directory
Huge time saver. Thanks!

this is for all cisco routers?
I have a catalyst 2950
inachu 2 years ago
Yes this will work for the catalyst 2950 switch.
Newer routers, such as the 2600 or later use the tftpdnld command from rommon to easily recover a corrupt or missing IOS image.

Looking for gui software.
cisco certified geeks say you should leran the CLI before using GUI.
Thats like saying we must learn DOS before we can use Windows XP.
This is just a way to keep people out of the competition.

rename flash:html, first & test tftp/backup image
#verify /md5 old IOS with backup IOS MD5 hash
#archive tar /xtract tftp: flash:
#verify flash:newios.bin
(config)#boot system flash:iosname.bin
