When the Alhambra was built it was already a vassal state Spain. For over 250 years it suited the Spaniards to keep most of the Muslims coralled in Granada. Then when it suited them they went in and took it. When I was there last there were lots of Spaniards who all didn't have a clue about the sculpted writings. And rightly so. Spaniards are neither Arabs nor Muslims.
