I agree about the American versus British humor--I think many people love Napolean Dynamite because of the awkwardness and the long quiet pauses, because such things are much rarer in American comedies than in British ones.In British comedies there are pauses, and there is more subtlety but I think most American comedy is just about sex and fast-paced slapstick laughs. So though contrived to seem 'indie'--a very clever remark on your part--to mainstream America it's groundbreaking or something.
Sweety keep in mind this is targeted to the American audience, so many of the jokes will only make sense to the americans of the United States, not Britain. I'll give you an example, I find Mr Bear terribly boring to watch, but for British he's funny. So there you have it, in order to understand certain humor you'll have to be born in that country or that surrounded culture. By the way Napoleon Dynamite was a huge hit mainly in the States.
Thank you for bringing up that the humour is very American- it's so interesting to think that despite understanding the same language we take different things from it! x
If you're ever in Seattle send me a PM and I'll take you out for steak and explain to you the subtleties of Napoleon Dynamite and how it relates to the common American experience.
Well, it's a comedy; there isn't necessarily anything to get. But with a movie with such specific humour, you either love it or hate it. I haven't heard anyone say it was okay, just people saying it's amazing or awful. You can't really put comedies under the same criteria as other movies let alone any criteria at all. I don't even think comedies should be reviewed because they're so heavily affected by the reviewer's taste.
I love that you are reviewing newer movies, though I still think that Napoleon Dynamite is an awesome movie, though an odd one at the same time. Keep on reviewing, and I will keep watching.
